What the heck was he thinking? Like the sudden change of color would somehow match?

I take it as the material in the plastic seems along where it opens at the chest, the cuffs, & in the boots have a bit of red in them, & you only see the red in them depending on the lighting. Like for example, when Jorel is about to condemn them, the surroundings are all black, so the reflective material would only reflect black. But when there outside in the bright sun, you can see the red.

No.. in ALL the DOnner's shots their suits are only black.
They were made with RED trims in Lester's scenes... probably because Lester wanted to give the villains a greater degree of dimension?
With Donner it was pretty simple:
Zod: Evil dictator Ursa: Asexual man-hater Non: Unstoppable destructive force
And they wear BLACK PERIOD.
With Lester.. he gave then red highlights and made Zod a numbskull parody of himself, Ursa his sycophantic hanger-oner and gave Non a childlike innocence.
I guess the red helps them be a little more nuanced??

I actually think that the red trim and the 'blue' backdrop was put in to make the villains stand out more during the battle sequence when Lester took over.

Were those outfits their actual clothes,or were they prison uniforms? If you goto 1:49 in the video below.....there seems to be a red reflection or even a red trimming of sorts , in Zod's suit in STM.

Were those outfits their actual clothes,or were they prison uniforms? Good point. It would have probably have been clearer if Donner/Mank continued with other films and we got to see if there were other prisoners in the Phantom Zone (according to the Donnerverse) or if they were the only ones.

I don't think there would be other prisoners in the phantom zone. Jor-El said that there were only three criminals that were impossible to rehabilitate.

I don't think there would be other prisoners in the phantom zone. Jor-El said that there were only three criminals that were impossible to rehabilitate. For good and bad, Puzo seemed to write the story as if there wasn't any plan for any more to follow it up (once you reverse time, where do you go from there realistically?)--- If Donner/Mank had wanted to do a 'Star Wars' 9-picture film series (how wonderful would that have been?)- then maybe they would have said that there were others that were were not mentioned for the record to appease the council in having propaganda on how the society was... but would have led to more opportunities for more characters from Krypton IF more survivors were there. One sad thing among many with Singer's sequels never happening was the idea of other survivors that went to other planets in his extension of the Donnerverse that he hinted at.
