Considering a few trailers to accompany each Reeve Superman fan cut, to bring back the context of the times that each movie came out (at least within a couple of years).
Was wondering what you suggest-
My own ideas:
STM: Star Wars, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture
SII: Raiders of the Lost Ark (the competition that summer), Arthur, Chariots of Fire,
SIII: Return of the Jedi, Flashdance, Staying Alive
SIV: Untouchables, Lethal Weapon
Other thoughts?

Wasn't easy since I was more stuck on the release dates around the time the Superman movies came out. I'll try to offer some different choices.
STM - Capricorn One, Heaven Can Wait, Damien: Omen 2.
SII - Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Excalibur, Clash of The Titans.
SIII - A Christmas Story, National Lampoon's Vacation, Sudden Impact or War Games.
SIV - Adventures in Babysitting, Full Metal Jacket, The Lost Boys or The Monster Squad.

I couldn't find much that really fit with Superman that year. Felt odd trying to tack Animal House or Dawn of The Dead trailers onto it.
While doing a little research for this I also realized just how many Vietnam War set movies came out in 1987. Some I remembered coming out that year and some I didn't. A few years before that it was the whole "rescue POW's still in Nam" phase of movies. By '87 there were a bunch of films set during the war.

That's VERY cool Dejan! I agree- at that time, when Star Wars/New Hope and Superman came out... it REALLY changed the landscape of movies like never before. I remember that things were fairly dark in the movies, with the family films generally relegated only to Disney and the like before these two came out. After the 'surge' of Star Wars and STM- I don't think there was a real mindblower in the films visually until Terminator 2 and then Jurassic Park not long after. (Odd how the first one holds up pretty well, JP- not quite as much).

That period from to late 70's to the mid 90s is really when fantasy, sci fi, and genre films in general peaked. So many classics one after the other. It's just not something you see today. 1982 alone was just loaded with iconic genre films. Now we're lucky to get one in a year.

The fact that no other flick from 1978 fits with STM is the reason why STM stood out In terms of war movies for 1978.....there was the Deer Hunter and Coming Home.... classics no doubt. The only thing that could compete with STM in terms of visual fantasy would have been the re-released Star Wars(it played in some theaters all the way through 1978). Here is the trailer for the 1978 re-release of Star Wars: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGKikqxxSdA

Here in the UK, Star Wars did not get released until December 1977(for the premiere Movie Houses in London) and into January 1978 for the proper nationwide release. This clip gives an insight into the UK cinematic culture(which would have been identical to the US) of 1978 with the release of Star Wars.....definitely worth watching even if you are in the US!: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9WVNMYPpJQThe same cinematic culture into which STM would debut into.....11 months later: www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDEux4R2eKE

The innocence and simplicity of the first Star Wars (at the time Lucas mentioned that the stormtroopers weren't necessarily human- as he thought it was more acceptable violence-wise if they weren't people under the trooper masks...) I'm reminded of watching this. In terms of supply/demand, just a ton of dark films then, very little optimism in scifi and fantasy at the time, which I think is what made SW shine more than its groundbreaking fx at the time... I wasn't aware that the release time was so much later- must have been such a treat to have STM just one (rather than 2) year later for the film audiences at the time!
