Why didn't Routh get the part of Superman for this TV show? Better than Tyler Hoechie and his gargantuan caboose.

Don't even get me started- the opportunity was RIGHT THERE to tie it into the SR timeline.... I did catch the in-joke they had for the crossover- so, I assume that Routh has a sense of humor about it- but I wonder if it would have been considered too painful to ask Routh to play the role he got booted from - and booted in a really poor fashion. Still.... would have loved to have seen that happen. Such a pity, but I can sort of understand why they wouldn't have felt comfortable asking...

There were probably two reasons. They didn't want to be limited by SR continuity in any way (same reason they didn't get Welling). This is similar to why the Arrow Tv show wasn't based on the Smallville version of Oliver Queen. Also the same reason Mercy Reef wasn't connected to the Smallville version of Aquaman. Hollywood is notorious for that. Part of it is practical but it's also ego driven. They'd already cast Routh as Ray Palmer/Atom so that ruled him out. Remember they were banned from using Superman in the Berlantiverse until Supergirl and specifically the post BVS fallout of the second season so they couldn't have forseen the rights to use Superman on tv clearing up so soon. Supergirl itself couldn't REALLY use the character until they softened their stance after the BVS backlash. Personally I would have wanted Routh back but I can see their reasoning. If sr had been cannon that would have affected the universe they were building for Supergirl too. Would Lexcorp exist? Would Lena? Their take on Jimmy Olsen is totally different from Singer and Huntington's Easy solution would be to say (if they hadn't cast him as atom) Routh is a different version of Superman (multiverse would make this easy) but some average viewer would still be confused. I remember arguing with a guy that Batman Begins wasn't a prequel to Batman 89 in 2005. I like Hoechlin though. He's imo far better than Cavill between the writers take and his more natural acting. He might make my top five live action Supermen list. I think with the way DC does things now Rouths chances of returning to the role are higher than ever wether it be SR continuity or not. Especially with the multiverse concept. At some point in the future these always a chance of it. 25 years ago did anyone expect to see this?

Usually only one Superman shows up when a plane is in trouble. Huh. I thought it was Shawn Ashmore back there. Good to see, though, that Brandon has a good sense of humor over SR. Wonder how he feels about how the new Superman movie situation from afar....

I'd like to pick their brains and ask both of them how they feel. Cain was brutally honest on SR but after getting to know Routh he hasn't been as harsh on it. He also wasn't crazy about BVS either but he held back probably because he's working on Supergirl. He did take a jab at Cavills suit and physique tho. Routh's in the same boat working on a DC show but he was more diplomatic when it came to MOS and BVS
I think Routh probably feels some vindication. SR was criticized but he only got one shot. The DCEU has had several films and it seems all the films with Superman in them have been controversial and divisive. Maybe more so than SR since it keeps happening. He might feel better about it because now people can see it's not as easy as they think is to make one of these movies when WB is calling the shots.

I'd be curious in general what Cain's thoughts were- I do know that Cain and Routh were on the same panel, Cain seemed like a natural storyteller- Routh seemed quieter but a nice presence. But with Legends of Tomorrow firmly under his belt, maybe he feels more confidence at panels? I know my nephew really likes Routh better as Ray Palmer vs. being Superman.

I think the Arrowverse version of Atom is really a more confident version of Routh himself. His Clark Kent seemed to be an exaggerated version of himself. I think it's why that worked so well.
Cain is definitely an entertaining subject at Cons and panels. I've watched some of his online and he really makes it worth it.

On his Lois & Clark dvd commentary, he said pretty matter-of-fact that he actually came equally to Hwood to be a screenwriter or an actor.... so he seems like somebody that was more about storytelling than trying to constantly be in the spotlight. He mentioned on some episodes that he wished that he could have gotten more characters in the ensemble on the Daily Planet- very much the opposite of what I've heard Shatner tried to do in stealing the limelight whenever possible on his Trek episodes.

Cain had a lot of ideas for where he wanted the show to go so he didn't just read the lines and get a check. His stepdad is a director and he grew up in LA so that probably had something to do with his interests after he hurt his knee in the NFL.

I also hear endlessly from third parties how Dean Cain onset of L&C was easy as pie to work with. Teri Hatcher, on the other hand..... not so much.

Cains kind of hinted at that too. He said something about her guest spot on Smallville like "Oh Teri" she and Brosnan didn't get along very well on Tomorrow Never Dies.

I met Dean Cain this year at a convention. He was wonderful. Very friendly and took time to talk to me and my 12 y.o. son.
He also told me Christopher Reeve will always be his Superman.

He's always been a really good sport who never seemed to take himself too seriously. His bit on Kimmel when BVS came out was great.

Wish I could find it online. Yeah somehow Kimmel gets all these cool superhero exclusives. I understand with Marvel because Disney owns ABC but he does it with DC movies too.

They used to do that. I remember the MTV movie awards parody of Batman Begins being on that DVD. I seem to recall other releases with material like that too. Guess they don't want to pay for the licensing.

I saw this think where the Berlanti verse actors were picking between Batman and Superman and everyone said Batman. Then they all said "sorry, Brandon."
