www.denofgeek.com/us/books-comics/superman/268064/new-richard-donner-superman-story-coming-in-action-comics-1000Sounds great. I wish the Donner story was set in the Reeve movie universe. I knew it was coming up but I didn't realize the one thousandth issue was coming out next year. That's a major milestone. Next year is going to be big for Superman. Lots of anniversaries and events. Action comics 1000, the 80th anniversary of the character, the 40th anniversary of the STM, the 25th anniversary of Lois & Clark, the 25th anniversary of the death of Superman story, the 30th anniversary of the ruby spears cartoon and Superboy, and the fifth anniversary of DC's shared movie universe and Man of Steel. They should really take the opportunity to revisit the characters entire history. Don't squander such a special time like they did the 75th. 2018 could be the true year of Superman.

I really wish that the Donner stories were a 'standalone' and weren't made to fit the current continuity at the time (with Lois and Clark already married). If DC is fine creating an alternate universe for the Smallville tv show and extending it, why haven't they considered doing an alternate universe for Donner's Superman, using STM as the basis? Seems like a giant missed opportunity....

That's why I wish Donners story was set in the Reeve movie universe. Seems like a no brainer with Batman 66 and Wonder Woman 77 being pretty well received. There's a lot they could do story wise. I think a major holdup might be likeness rights and maybe some copyrights.
They considered doing a Batman 89 comic but nixed it. I think with the Donner films being referenced so much lately and Johns getting more clout a STM comic series has the best chance of happening as it's ever had.

I think with the Donner films being referenced so much lately and Johns getting more clout a STM comic series has the best chance of happening as it's ever had. Well.... they did get the ok to use Brando's likeness (it seems) when SR came out- but the likenesses were never that close anyhow in the comics. It would be nice if Donner and Johns worked together to make a "Donnerverse" Superman comic series that incorporates a lot of the ideas that Donner and Mank may have had, if they continued....... but I don't know how much Donner would remember or have interest in what was going to happen, other than that Mank would have written/directed the third film. Mank seemed like he had an amazing memory for these things, but with his untimely death--- unless there were some notes he had for a third film/ and/or unless Donner has a similar notebook, I wonder how likely it would be to happen. For sure, it's a shame that they didn't approach this much earlier. John Byrne was supposed to have drawn up the adaptation to Superman II ramping up to Superman Returns, but the plans changed and they did the (underwhelming) comic prequels instead. If they had done Superman II in comics, maybe it could have laid down some tracks to continue it.... but, just like everything else- will see, I guess... I just saw Bob Gale credited with co-writing a Back to the Future comic with IDW.... and Joss Whedon still is somewhat connected to his Buffy/Angel comics I believe.... so I would imagine a lot hinged/hinges on the filmmakers' personal interest to begin with. Hmn...

I normally don’t buy these kinds of magazines anymore but I’m kind of curious to check this one out.

I picked this up - I'm glad that they gave Reeve the dominant spot on the cover- but with a magazine close to the same price as a book, I get particular about the magazine design & layout- It was ok, but I miss the attention and care with stuff like the STM collector's magazine.

Makes sense with the 40th anniversary of STM and with WBs recent Blu-ray releases they’re clearly once again embracing the Reeve era to win back some fan interest.
I’ve flipped through some of these at stores like the BvS and JL collector magazines but the last time I think I bought magazines like this was for SR. Those were ok but unless they’re really interesting and well put together I’m not that interested in buying.
So what else did this new one have, CAM? Same old same old or were there any interesting articles or photos?
I still remember buying the Les Daniels complete history of Superman hardcover book from 20 years ago and being really impressed. Regretted not buying the Batman book.

I'll post a longer review later, just stopping here for a few minutes- I flipped through- the articles seem ok- but, again, was turned off from the combination of the price tag and not really put together as I'd like- (no art, all photos we've seen before). When I have more time will share highlights-

$13 dollars for a magazine? That's steep.

Welcome to 2018 and inflation. That’s what magazines like that one regularly cost. I don’t buy stuff like that myself much anymore but I guess if someone hadn’t looked at one in 20 years they might be surprised. I don’t think it’s worth it but I don’t think most things are worth what they cost today.

$13 dollars for a magazine? That's steep. It IS steep. That's part of why I'm so picky on the layout and design. It's pretty much like buying a book.
