Here’s one from Superman III I like.

That's amazing!!!
What trips me out over that shot are a few things:
#1: That looks so epic, why on earth does something look fantastic behind the scenes but seem relatively tame and unspectacular from the angles Lester shot this with???
#2: In knowing that the pole-arm broke early on in STM (when he was carrying Margot)--- That's REALLY impressive for Reeve to have had the faith in the wires from that high distance. (I get a bit of vertigo and queasiness just looking at that to be honest).

Yeah from some of the heights he was at...even attached to a crane you’d imagine in the back of his head he wondered about the wires.
I think you answered your own question: it’s the angles. In shooting scenes for the film they had to make sure to not get the crane, the crew, and generally not get too close to see anything we shouldn’t. In a candid behind the scenes photo like this people are taking pictures as wide and as far away as they want.

It's a bit of a pity that the home software tech now to easily block out things wasn't available then.... it would have provided even more amazing shots for the Reeve films.
Still, it's amazing how new things are still discovered for those Reeve years!

It’s one of the positives of the internet. People are getting to share more and more of this stuff as it turns up. There’s probably a lot of stuff like this out there since these movies shot in such public places all over the world and people probably showed up with cameras or to get autographs. There might be families sitting on some more of this kind of stuff. in a box somewhere and not even know it. Photos, stories, video, etc. That’s not even getting into stuff the crews might have.

That photo is better than all of the flying scenes in MoS put together

Flashbacking a bit to the behind the scenes video of Reeve flying up impressively from the city dump location- and remembering the actual finished flying shot being fine, but not nearly as impressive. Ironic...

Superman 3 really had some fantastic flying effects.
The junkyard fight scene had a few very short flying shots, but they look so real and solid.
I love the part where evil Superman jumps/flies out of the acid bath. I still don't know how they did that.
And another great one is where he flies to the control panel that operates the crusher machine.
Also, the part just after he punches Clark, he flies towards him and crashes into him. That was amazing too.
None of these were lengthy, but look and feel so real and natural.

If we had another talent directing- we could have had a stronger/good script, maybe someone with a strong visual eye, and take Superman back towards the high quality direction, rather than the 'cheap visuals/cheap jokes' direction. If Sydney Furie had the resources that Lester had for Superman 3, wonder how that would have turned out....

This might be a hot take but depending on the shots I think III had the second best effects and flying work of the four Reeve films. The front projection stuff was good and Reeve’s take offs and landings were pretty much perfected by then. In some instances III had THE best work. They weren’t as creative or dynamic with the camera work as some scenes in STM but they were the most consistently good as far as the other technical aspects. IVs effects are mostly horrible and II is all over the place because of circumstances. If we include Supergirl it might have superior effects to Superman III. To me Supergirl was the effects people getting it all down to a science.

If nothing else, Helen Slater, the music, and the cinematography make Supergirl worth sitting through. It's arguable which is the worst script- Supergirl or Supes 3- but at least Jeannot Swarz knew how to shoot a beautiful flying sequence.
