Jim Bowers said recently that he asked WB Archives about an extended SII cut- but no other information on what WB archives' response was.
What that suggests to me is that it hadn't been considered yet--- or if it has (unless they're being coy) that it wouldn't be ready for this year...... but how long does it take for a restoration these days if under a studio banner for a tv cut?
I was thrilled- but surprised- when the extended tv cut came out (almost literally) overnight and out on the shelves.
I was kind of hoping that would be the case here---- but if Jim had to ASK about it..... then that means that WB hasn't informed him otherwise or that it hadn't been started by WB....
On another front, the coffee table book hadn't gotten the green light yet. Apparently a lot of legal issues that need to be unwrangled first. (Maybe because it was originally an independent release? Dunno)....
How sad that something that seemed so straightforward would have so many lags and obstacles...

The deleted scenes from The Donner Cut are lifted directly from the TV edit, so it should exist. Figured that the sales of the first film’s extended cut would have opened the door for it, but I guess not.

Agreed! My guess is that they may be reluctant because it is 15 minutes—- but imo with the restored Donner footage (that was better edited) I think this is a better Donner cut overall (even though one has to sit through more Lester nuttiness).
In the past, some director or extended cuts only had a few minutes but were still released. REALLY hoping this gets green lit.

They’re probably waiting not only to see just how much they can get out of it but they might be waiting for IIs 40th anniversary. It would be the perfect time to capitalize on it. They also gives them a little time to make the decision.

They also gives them a little time to make the decision. Perhaps. My counterargument would be that - since the tv extended blu ray exceeded their expectations, that they strike 'while the iron is hot' and restore/release a similar duo blu ray combo- (I assume that the inclusion of the Donner blu ray extra was to appease Donner/ and/or also get rid of excess inventory at the same time).... I'm uncertain that they would celebrate SII's 40th.... did WB do anything for SII's 30th or 20th? In any case, I'm glad that Jim Bowers talked to them about it directly. On another note, was sad to hear that the photo book Jim Bowers was going to put out is caught up in a lot of legal entanglements (I can't imagine why there would be so many obstacles, but I don't work in the book industry).... oh well...

Considering they didn’t do much of anything for some of STM’s big anniversaries either (30th or 35th or Batman’s 20th is 25th) I wouldn’t look at that as any kind of sign that they won’t. I think what’s changed is they’re embracing those older versions more especially now with the streaming service, pushing the dc brand as a whole, and the shaky ground the dceu is on.
It seems like companies in general have begun to celebrate big anniversaries of popular films more and more in recent years. Probably to get one last squeeze out of physical media like 4K blu rays and for special screenings. Yeah there’s striking while the iron is hot but there’s also striking at the right moment for cross promotion. That’s what the did for STM after all. They could have also released the STM tv cut years ago but didn’t. They did it now for a reason. Timing.

Maybe they are going to release the Selutron cut of S2 Now that’s something that would be a real treat for Superman II’s 40th anniversary. I’d also take a recut version of Batman Forever with the deleted scenes. Even with its dubious reputation I’m shocked that didn’t happen when it got its special edition release on dvd. Back then the format was selling well too. I think now the time has passed since the films reputation has sunk considerable after the release of B&R and the Nolan films. Much like Superman II I think there’s a better movie there in all that footage. The same is true for justice league. And Suicide Squad. I’m seeing a pattern with WBs superhero movies.

The Selutron cut would be interesting, but I just feel that the licensing of the 'Swarm' movie would be way too problematic. I have big doubts. I would love a better official recut of the Donner Cut- but since it seems so unlikely, at least the extended SII tv cut felt like it retained Stuart Baird's editing for the extra restored scenes (the PZ criminals approach to the Fortress, the Arctic Patrol scene, the longer Balcony scene)... so that's why I've been crossing my fingers for that.
