Ok, I admit it's a bit of a stretch of a title to include it on the main page, but, eh.
So, saw the film last night.
For all the controversy, it does feel like a complete story. It's 'good', not 'great'.... particularly with being aware that members of Queen are still alive and rock star biopics have to have a mixed set of expectations to start out with. The guy from "Mr. Robot" is compelling and carries the film, but the performances are all solid and it's interesting enough I think- but isn't very deep. It has energy and I found it interesting enough- though I would have liked to have seen a scene with them getting to score "Flash Gordon", and/or a mention of Mike Meyers promoting the song on SNL later on included somehow.
In hearing the arguments with the actor and director --- it kind of brings back memories of the movie: "Great Balls of Fire" with Dennis Quaid arguing with the films' director.... it seems like both actors wanted to portray one version of the character, and the director another... resulting in a 'meh' film.
Would love to hear both sides of the argument on what story should have been told- a commentary by Singer in depth would be great, but as he was fired (there'e no 'Bad Hat Harry' logo at the front even though Singer is credited as director)- probably very unlikely.

This is one time where I feel the rumors about Singer have merit. He was accused of the same stuff on the Superman Returns set. We all brushed it off as rumors. I think the guy has some real problems. Not necessarily the things he’s been accused of but that wouldn’t surprise me either and that could be a factor. The obvious suspect is drugs but there’s no real proof of that. There was recent story that a lot of X-men Apocalypses problems came from similar behavior from Singer.
As for Bohemian Rapsody I’m curious to see it. It seemed like it took this film forever to get made in various incarnations. One complaint I hear is it doesn’t delve into Mercury’s life enough or he’s portrayed as too unlikable times. To me that’s just the nature of the story. The movie is about more than just him but it’s also about a particular period of time and is trying to be somewhat honest.

The movie is about more than just him but it’s also about a particular period of time and is trying to be somewhat honest. I only had problems with the last act of X-men Apocalypse- and that's mainly from a script level. The other parts are actually very well directed, I thought- whether Singer had problems or not. (I just don't know) With Bohemian Rhapsody- I enjoyed it, knowing full well that many reviews said that it wasn't going to be too deep---or too accurate. It has energy, it is a fun journey. It is a celebration of the music and the sense of joy in creating the songs. Right now, I know expecting biopics to have any real accuracy might be too much to ask of it- but if it entertains (and I think this one does), and has a positive spirit, it's good enough.
