Physically durance seemed to be in that Hatcher mold to me with a little Dana Delaney thrown into her version of the character. I think what Tulloch and Hoechlin have going for them is people behind the scenes who while not the most consistent writers have a strong grasp of the right tone and direction to go in. Coming off the Snyder misfire Hoechlin must seem like an even more welcome relief to a lot of fans. I think Berlanti and his people leaned heavy into the classic Superman feel when casting both of them maybe moreso than smallville. There’s no “no tights no flights” mandate or any controversies like Welling refusing to wear the suit in the Arrowverse. They seem to have learned to give the audience what they want and leave them happy. I think the same thing happened with Cryer as Lex. After the Rosenbaum disaster they had a clear indicator of what to do and what NOT to do.

After the Rosenbaum disaster they had a clear indicator of what to do and what NOT to do. To me, physically, I've either got to have a 'that's spot on' or 'maybe it fits' reaction for iconic characters like Superman and Lois.... and, yeah, even with watching them for an episode, I had issues with it. Ben Affleck worked ok for me in BvS because of the way the movie was strutcured right off the bat with Batfleck's point of view. To this day, while Welling seems good to his fans, there's always going to be a bit of resentment I'll have towards him for refusing the costume in Smallville. I didn't follow Smallville all the way through (started off interesting, I lost interest halfway through, then show runners changed for the last two seasons for the better)- But I really enjoyed what I saw of Rosenbaum as Lex.... but as far as the writing goes- yeah, it kind of looks like Berlianti's company took good notes on what fans like in a comic series--- though they still need to get the memo imo on the dull romances that seem to dominate many of their superhero series....

It’s the cw. That seems to be a network edict as far as the soap opera. Smallville suffered from it too. Most people wanted Lana gone a long time ago. Arrow seems determined to force the Oliver and Felicity romance down people’s throats. They knew a lot hated it thus why they took a break from it and came back to it a year or two later. I think if a performance or a take on a character is so good it doesn’t matter as much of it’s not exactly like the comics. Look at the mcu. We’ve had that conversation about how Downey ain’t exactly what the comic book Tony Stark was before but it’s taken off. Same is true for a lot of MCU characters.
As for Welling I think everyone knows he made a mistake by not giving fans what they waited ten years for. Everyone ribs him about it. Cain did. Even Durance does on that video Q&A I posted.

If I still have a bit of resentment towards Welling's ego for not putting on the suit, I'm sure there's other fans that probably feel the same. (Easily solved if he approached Berlianti to do an alternative Superman as a guest wearing the suit..) Very possible on the forced romances by WB .... and/or if the forums for those shows are dominated by the fans that want the romances. Star Trek Generations & DS9 maybe were way free of those kinds of demands, from being on syndication... Tony Stark never seemed that deep or interesting a character to me, so Downey inserting his persona on top of the comics template fit just right- down to his past history of battles with substances. So, in a sense, a previous weakness became a strength in being true to the comic character. Evans in interviews seems very much a sensitive, good dude- and was a far better fit for Captain America than Johnny Storm (though he did give a good performance for that character, too).

peopletv.com/video/jon-cryer/Talks about some notable roles in Pretty in Pink, Superman IV, Two And A Half Men, etc. Wish they’d covered Hiding Out, Hot Shots, and a couple of other things.

That's cool... just wish the full interview had expanded more on his time on SIV...p
Love the bit with the mentioning what was going on with the last episode on Supergirl.... but it'll be weird to see if the new changes for the last episode are an improvement over the original version... (sad that the new dvds have so little extra content nor commentaries)

Pretty impressive to see how consistent Cryer has been on a lot of things concerning the movie and his fandom. Guess he really means it unless he went back and watched old interviews of himself. I also liked Margots honestly and outlook on things. Makes it easy to see why she was so good as Lois Lane.
It was definitely the right call to remove any dislike or rivalry between Lois and Lacy because that stuff is so cliched and predictable. Superman Returns thankfully handled the Clark/Richard dynamic in the same way. Richard was a good likable guy instead of some a-hole and the two men seemed to at least respect each other.

Great finds!
It's neat to see that Cryer was pretty much the same down-to-earth dude that he is now- but personally, if he wasn't- I know I'm certainly not the same person I was years ago & I actually couldn't blame him if he was much different now from then.
It's also interesting to see this interview in light of the other video interview where it seems like she had to 'fight' to still play Lois - I wonder if the writing had reflected more that the years had passed (i.e. not having Lois be quite as comical as parts as when she was in STM/SII, maybe even adding a touch of grey to Superman's hair like they did with Routh in Crisis to show time's passage)- if it would have smoothed out some of the parts I felt were a bit clunky due to age differences?
In any case- love seeing these 'never before seen' bits! thanks again for sharing this!
