Came back from the Fathom Events showing in my area (would have gone to more than one, but this was the only day offered)-
First, was somewhat thrilled that in the multiplex, it got what felt like a pretty good size screen and LOUNGE seats (the huge size with reclinable legs).
The 'slideshow' at the beginning had a picture of the Blu ray cover and some quiz questions about the making of STM. This was interspersed with ads for Superman-related comic books and graphic novels, and it was fun to see certain creator's names on the big screen.
Then- there was a 'mini-feature' with trivia about the movie..... until the SOUND died halfway through!
The manager came out and announced it would restart- but he failed to rewind the feature.
Instead, we got a nice treat of a Dave Fleisher Superman cartoon (looked GREAT on the big screen)- and it was nice to see the B&W logo in the front of STM (though, wasn't the red one the original one shown? I really can't remember if it was red for STM or SII at this point).
The sound I know wasn't the original mix, and there was a few bits that annoyed me where a new sound effect blasted out something else I wanted to hear, here and there- but overall I was okay with it. Having the front titles rumble through the theatre was great.
The theatre was slightly less than half-full, but, considering, hopefully for the powers that be, this was considered a good turnout to encourage more. I thought perhaps there might be some 'concert-like bonding' with folks who obviously were really into STM, but it's a different time and/or the folks we sat next to were just really private. (Though it was cool to see a young family all wear the 'S' logo t-shirt for the event. I wanted to give them a 'hi-five' for the effort).
Sadly, no poster or anything to commemorate coming to the event. *sigh*
Anyhow- back to the film. The Krypton section was great, and although I've seen the film a zillion times on blu ray or dvd- having the whole world of the film surround your view and having an audience WANTING to see the film (and not on their phone) was a great experience.
What I did wonder was: Would this be a quiet audience (who most likely already has seen this film many times) or a loud cheering one?
Well- It turned out mostly to be a quiet audience, but I knew that they were lapping up every frame of film, so that was cool- people who had to get up to go to the bathroom literally FLEW out of the theatre and flew back in, and that told me that they really didn't want to miss any of it.
But- there were bits where (even if everyone already knew the jokes)- the audience still laughed, and it was infectious. The section with Superman's interview with Lois and the bit with Perry telling everyone to get on the Superman story got the most laughs.
On another note, seeing it on the big screen again with thinking of Margot Kidder's death this year- made me feel sad but also appreciate of how much she stole many scenes and was a big 'spark' to a good chunk of the movie.
On the flip side: the picture quality felt very inconsistent. The Kansas scenes almost seemed faded at times, and now and then I would notice some grain in some shots that weren't in others. But- especially knowing it might be a LONG time before this could ever happen again, made the best of it.
For 3/4ths of the film, I loved it, but I think probably from watching the movie SO many times, I have to admit that after the rocket chase, I was kind of wishing either that the pace would pick up or that this was the extended version to add extra energy to the last part of the film (Sacriliege I know- but this is all primarily from seeing it one zillion times).
Anyhow, still loved it..... and a good chunk of the audience stayed for the end credits- until the projectionist decided to turn off the sound and turn on the lights! The guy next to me booed and I echoed my displeasure. No respect to the film. *sigh*
Oh well--- at least the theatre carried the event (many didn't in the area). Here's hoping it made enough tor them to do it again or show SII....
