Actually, just cheating with the Superman reference- just to put this out there.
So- Dark Phoenix is a mix in my opinion.
On one hand, there are a number of scenes that I thought were smarter to make the X-men movie more on a personal level- (i.e. Raven talking about quitting with Beast, the idea of a new generation of X-kids actually just celebrating with Dazzler entertaining them, etc.)--- but as soon as there's a touchstone for more character stuff that could be interesting--- the plot moves onto the next action sequence.
Worse, the antagonists are so dull and insignificant, that Apocalypse seems like a fully fleshed out character by comparison. Still, half of it moves along well enough- despite moments of unintentional laughter here and there just through ineptness of editing or directing.... but by the last act, when we get to the last action sequence, it's such an uninteresting slog that you have time to stop and realize how thin and shallow the whole movie has been.
In any case, I don't think that Simon Kinberg will have to worry about the phone ringing off the hook as director with the Rotten Tomatos meter hovering at about 20 percent. It's sad that for a writer-producer that's been around movie production as long as he has, that his directing debut is as inept as it is.
Such a pity... in some ways Phoenix is better than X3- in other ways, it's the other way around. Yikes.
UPDATED:
Apparently the last act (which all takes place on earth and is easily the worst part of the film)- was supposed to take place in space, with only a few of the X-men. If the original cut actually is better.... much like Josh Trank's FF.... I actually am curious about it, and whether or not it works better.... but it certiainly couldn't be much worse.
