The Donner version of S2 is not so much a sequel as it is a direct continuation. It is like the relationship between Back to the Future 3 and Back to the Future 2.
On the other hand, the theatrical S2 is more of a sequel. It doesn't necessarily take place very soon after STM, and it feels like Superman has been established on earth for some time. It's like the relationship between BTTF 2 and BTTF.
Which do you prefer?
I like the idea of STM and S2 forming one long story. Feels more epic. But the execution sadly didn't work out properly.
Oh, what could have been.... 😢

As far as what exists now? I prefer the Lester cut idea of some time passing. Explains why Luthor is in prison with no mention of a trial in the Lester cut. Donner’s cut mentions it but it seemed pretty fast unless he was tried in absentia

Yeah, I also like it better with time having passed.
Also worked out well that there was a couple of years gap between the release of both films.
I think if the events of STM and S2 were crammed into one long story,it would be too overstuffed. Like MoS was.

I prefer it as two movies but I’d love to see one long movie as a curiosity or as a creative exercise. I think it would work better as a mini series sort of like the old broadcast network style mixed with the old network movie broken into two or three nights the way ABC used to. The cliffhanger of Zod and co. being released after Superman throws an explosive device into space is too good to pass up.
I’m still waiting for an official release of Kill Bill 1 and 2 as one long movie. I’d also like to see Infinity War and Endgame edited together as one long six hour bladder busting event. Use the comic book name of Infinity Gauntlet for the new title.

Use the comic book name of Infinity Gauntlet for the new title. The original script ending is exciting to read on the page, especially as it ends with transitioning back to the b&w comic book and the cliffhanger being the 'to be continued in the next issue' type page, then the kid closing the comic book. The original ending has more symmetry from the beginning, but then again, you don't get all the emotion of the last act, which can feel overly long with Superman saving everyone each time. One of the few moments I think Baird messed up on was cutting the close-up of Reeve after saving the power station.... where he looked a bit tense and conveyed the idea that even he wasn't reassured that he was going to be able to save everyone & everything going on... but nice we got the 3 hour version that reinstated it....
