Inspired by post by Kamdan on the trailer thread...
I know it's been speculated and mentioned (and read into with the interviews) on how much damage to the Donner Cut being so choppy might have been by
(1) Donner's demands (of which we don't know all of- only in vague terms- 'faster faster faster' and 'you don't need that'--- which could refer to some of the great deleted scenes that unfortunately didn't get reinstated)
(2) Thau's choices and strategy for the RDC.
Michael Thau has mentioned in interviews that he was short-staffed and didn't have the time he needed- something far different than what fan editors have to deal with...
But-
Up to this point, here's what we know-
#1: That there are two cuts of the RDC- one of which has the infamous "Non throws the police siren" scene- and that version actually is slightly longer and makes a little more sense by the inclusion of the Lester material... which Donner suggested he hated in the commentary ('you don't need to show scenes of villains killing kids' I think is the quote)---
So- we know Donner had influence over deletions and changes to the cut- he wasn't totally hands off...
#2: We know that Michael Thau mentioned not enough money, hands, time to do the job the way he felt it should be done.
It kind of begs the question: if he DID have enough time- what would have been his choices?
#3: Did Michael Thau regret any of the choices made editorially given the time constraints/ money? Unfortunately, we might never know. He lives with the cut that's out... who knows how many parameters he had to work under.
#4: There are differences, but general consensus seems to be: there's too much Lester material cut to make watching the RDC a smooth film to watch.... and..
#5: From my perspective, does everyone more/less agree that the tv extended cut is a better Donner cut (particularly as it adds perhaps even more Donner material and cut better/ perhaps as Baird originally edited it?)?
We know that Michael Thau had to use the library of music existing and couldn't get NEW music--- but even so, (and I might be biased but) the new rearranged music choices seem more disruptive than additive.
In any case...
Pity that there's no 'mole' in WB DVD archives that can share if anything is being planned or worked on for the extended tv cut or a re-edit....
But- if Joel Schumacher wanted a 'special edition' of Batman Forever for years & couldn't get it done.... then another special edition of SII seems not that probable...
