Interesting if true bits:
Trademarks- Frequently casts Mel Gibson
Frequently casts Steve Kahan
Features human free-fall stunts in nearly all his films
Long shots looking at actors through gaps in scenery or between other actors in the scene
Shots from waist level or below looking up at actors
Frequently casts Danny Glover
Movies have a glossy look or feel to them
Often inserts lines of dialog or places PSA posters/stickers for animal rights, human rights, and gun control
Deep gruff voice
I do think that if he directed SII- that there would have been a stuntwoman jumping from a real bulidling and the stunt looking similar to what we saw in Lethal Weapon with two shots of people falling from buildings, rather than just a process shot from the RDC. (probably due to budget)
* Was considered to direct Batman (1989), and had actor Mel Gibson in mind for the role of Batman.
* Was actively pursued by Michael Crichton to direct Jurassic Park (1993).
* He was interested in directing DragonHeart (1996) and spent six months on it in preproduction before moving on to other projects.
* He was originally going to direct Wild Wild West (1999) (he had directed three episodes of The Wild Wild West (1965)). His version would have had a script by Shane Black and Mel Gibson starring as Jim West. Donner and Gibson wound up dropping out to make Maverick (1994) instead.
* He was considered to direct Judge Dredd (1995).
He has directed two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Superman (1978) and The Goonies (1985).

His version of Wild Wild West could have been good especially since Maverick was pretty good. Certainly couldn’t have been worse than what we got.

Maverick was fun with good scenes- but it's a pity that supposedly one of the main scenes written were cut out for being 'too dark' that William Goldman wrote.

I think as an adaptation of the show the film got it just right. The show could be serious but usually had a pretty fun tone. I thought Donners finished film captured the show well.

His scenes were some of my favorite parts of the Lethal Weapon movies. Always thought he was underrated in those because he was a funny guy. A shame Mary Ellen Trainor has passed away because I always like the short back and forths between her character and Riggs. She was actually a familiar face in a lot of movies from that extended Richard Donner/Bob Zemeckis/Joel Silver group. One of the perks of being married to Zemeckis I guess.

Pity Zemeckis wasn't obsessed with doing a Superman film.... I could see his aesthetics matching up well with Supes....

One of those guys that’s too big and too used to having a certain level of creative control. Those guys are better off doing their own thing. He could make a great superhero movie but he’s going to want a lot of control to do things a lot of people might not like.

He could make a great superhero movie but he’s going to want a lot of control to do things a lot of people might not like. That's what impressed me about Singer CHOOSING to continue and not replace Donner's STM (mostly)... It's like having Ridley Scott do a Star Wars movie and decide that he wants mainly to emulate Lucas' work on the original rather than doing his own original work or particular style. For all the time and effort required to do a major blockbuster, I understand many a-listers not wanting to do something that they're not necessarily passionate about- the only other time I can recall some giant Hollywood homage is when Gus Van Sant I believe did a shot for shot remake of Psycho years ago, if memory serves. I give Snyder credit for his visual translation of Watchmen--- even denying the regular sponsorship to really make the comic book come to life (i.e. not having Pepsi or other 'real' ads in the background as they weren't in the comic)- his clout allowed it to happen whereas even Terry Gilliam couldn't get it made (unfortunately).... but... it's sad that he didn't quite get the story or drama right. He did show himself to be a genuine comic book fan.... but he and Goyer's aesthetics just ended up with too many scenes that went beyond dark to just unnecessarily harsh and unpleasant. (Superman using his heat vision on Lois- was that really necessary???)

I respect Singer for taking some risks with stuff that had never been done With the character before. Like Snyder’s films SR does retreat a lot of old ground in almost a remake fashion but singers movie was much closer to working with some changes.

There are things I did enjoy and appreciate in Snyder's version... but it's drowned out by the scenes that were unnecessarily harsh bits. (That's why I've always been curious about a fan cut of it)- Singer's version to me mainly needed fresh action to offset Superman's somewhat melancholy mood- and could have definitely used a better conceived Luthor. But of course there's stuff I absolutely loved. The character at the core is the same as the Donner/Reeve one, who could ask for anything more?
