Not sure if this works, but I think if Donner had directed this, I think it would have felt more epic from different angles that I feel Donner would have included as his aim was always to make things feel bigger in scale using multiple camera angles- for educational purposes of course. vimeo.com/409198429superfan7

I love that moment you've added when he zooms in over the panicking bystanders. The scene really needs it. The actual first shot of Supes that Lester shot is terrible. Slow moving, with harsh-looking bluescreen - and the cheaply recorded score doesn't add much.
What I wouldn't give to jump into an alternate universe and see Donner's S2. Knowing my luck, I'd end up in a universe with Snyder's version. Superman crashes through a corn silo (which explodes) and punches the kid into a train (which explodes).

Thanks! It's only three added shots- two from stills from the actual Niagara rescue behind the scenes- I animated it a little so I could try to disguise that it's just a photo, (and one is far away) but I'm glad if it worked! (It's always hard to be objective)

Nice clip, they defiitely missed a trick or 2 when originally creating this scene.

Nice clip, they defiitely missed a trick or 2 when originally creating this scene. Thanks Booshman- though I realized I clipped a bit of Supes w/the kid in the long shot of Niagara from the ground looking up. What's nice is that there are snippets of that area today that haven't changed too much in long shots (darn those folks with cellphones in shots!)- on youtube. Also, I remembered that trick with Supergirl where they took a still image of Helen Slater & used it for a flying shot and seemed to work (if fast enough)! "You'll believe a still image can fly!"

It was a great idea for a set piece but Lester’s direction wasn’t creative enough to make it as good as it could have been. Still a good scene but could have been great.

It was a great idea for a set piece but Lester’s direction wasn’t creative enough to make it as good as it could have been. Still a good scene but could have been great. Agreed. The script had one touch that actually would have snowballed into more excitement inherently- 358 EXT. NIAGARA RIVER - DAY The row boat with the BOY has been caught up by the strong river current, is carried quickly along toward rougher waters in the distance. The dog barks, wakes up the BOY, who grabs his paddle, frantically tries to stop his momentum. 359 EXT. HOT DOG STAND - DAY CLARK stands at the end of a long line of PEOPLE at the hot dog stand. He waits patiently, bored. 360 EXT. RIVER NEAR FALLS - AERIAL VIEW From the air: The rowboat is tossed about by the violent current, the BOY paddling ineffectively in circles. 361 EXT. FALLS VANTAGE POINT - DAY LOIS stands looking through a binocular machine, PANS the area. Suddenly: Screams from the PEOPLE around her. They point off excitedly. LOIS wheels to look. 362 EXT. HOT DOG STAND CLARK has heard the commotion, looks off as well. 363 EXT. TOP OF FALLS - AERIAL VIEW The boat with the BOY and the dog approaches the top of the falls. 364 BACK TO LOIS LOIS watches in horror. 365 ANGLE ON FALLS THROUGH BINOCULAR MACHINE Seen through the binocular machine: the boat is about to tip over the Falls. The BOY leans forward, hunches down, tucking his dog under him. 366 CLOSE ON FALLS The tiny rowboat cascades down through the swirling Falls. Suddenly: SUPERMAN appears, bursts inside through the powerful waterfall, plucks the BOY and his dog under him. 367 EXT. VANTAGE POINT AND LOIS The CROWD gasps, pointing. LOIS lights up. Superman! LOIS
368 EXT. BASE OF FALLS The empty rowboat slams into the base of the Falls, is shattered into bits.Having the boy in the rowboat- and building anticipation, versus 'the sudden drop' allowed more details to raise the stakes for the scene- and the boat being crushed and being shattered into bits would have added a bit of an edge of 'what could have happened'- The more mundane choice of the boy playing against the rails and the stupid parents not paying attention softened it perhaps if they were worried about it being too intense--- but this could have been a far stronger set piece with a little more effort by Lester and company.
