Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent.
On paper, both the ideal castings. Everything that fans wanted.
But the final result?
Crap.
Why?

Spacey was colorful- but the plans idiotic.... It's one of the few times I felt like Singer went overboard in SR on loving STM--- I don't think any fans would have minded if the real estate aspect was left behind. Having Spacey be written as a quasi-twin to Hackman's Lex just wasn't all that interesting. Spacey as a performer is always interesting to watch.... but the characterization felt more arbitrary than fascinating.... and the quasi-continuity also only helped confuse things more. To date, I actually find Michael Rosenbaum as possibly the best Lex Luthor so far. I haven't seen enough of the most recent Jon Cryer interpretation (though I do like what I see) to judge that one.

Poor material poor writing poor directing. Take your pick. I don’t think Spacey was crap (that’s Jesse Eisenberg) but it didn’t live up to expectations. Remember Spaceys name first got mentioned for a Superman movie after Seven and Usual Suspects and I think when a lot of people I thought of him as Lex they had those movies in their head. Again he was fine but didn’t live up to the hype. I also thought Costner was fine but he had everything working against him. Snyder’s had a history of taking great actors and making them look average.
Add Jared Leto to your list ATP. Everyone thought it was going to be another Ledger situation and instead he turned out to be the worst Joker ever. Then you’ve got Jon Cryer who most people thought would be awful but he turned out to be the best Lex since at least Rosenbaum. They looked at Eisenberg and saw what not to do.

True... just a bad idea to try to have Spacey emulate Hackman's Luthor--- it didn't fit, and moreso- it might have worked for what Donner was planning for his two-parter, but conceptually I think that's one place were re-conceiving Luthor from the ground up would have been better, since they had the opportunity. Another friend also feels that Cryer is the ultimate Lex so far. I liked what I saw & I like the actors' interview on his respect for the Superman movies and character.

John Hurt in Contact (1997) always seemed be a kind of alternate version of Lex Luthor.
