Hey all, first time really making much of a post here in a very long time but I thought this might be an appropriate thing to come back with. So far I haven’t looked on the threads to see if anybody has posted about this yet, but there’s somebody independently making a remastered cut of the original superman movie with some new effects and it is going to be released on the 23rd. Completely done as a non-profit passion project. I’m attaching link to her version of the North Pole scene youtu.be/dv5dhXCObGo

Hey Mav!!!
Nice to hear from you-
I think the restored STM with new fx was mentioned here.... but while I always admire work done to honor Donner/Reeve's stm... I kind of felt like it was restoring the wrong film- while it's a nice upgrade to the FOS scene there.... I get mixed feelings on it, much like the Special edition adds to the original Star Wars series- why fix something unless it's REALLY broken? Still, can't deny that the scene does look bigger than what they had in 1979....
Personally I would have preferred she have used her tech skills to fix up SII and SIV --- those definitely could have used fixups...

Jesus it's been a while since you were on. Whatever happened to all the original crew? Did you all bugger off to facebook like I've read in a few posts? Alex, Chance, Kevin, loads of members just gone. This place doesn't even look to be modded anymore, who's keeping the light on? With regard to your post, I've followed the project for a bit, should be an interesting alternate version. Of all the effects the thing I was most impressed with was she fixed the S on the flipped shot of the Airforce One rescue. The movie is fine as it is for my taste but I have the highest respect for anyone doing a big project for no money and actually getting the thing finished.

Edit: I should have mentioned at the forefront: I do agree that any fan who devotes his/her time & attention for free for love of trying to make a loved movie even better deserves all the kudos possible-
While I did think the enhancement in the preview was very cool (and it's hard to resist not wanting to check out what (and how many) other fx she added...
I remember the mental can of worms watching "Star Wars" with upgraded fan fx was...
If you worshipped a film with many different real memories associated with it -as well as loving something 'just as it was'- then to me a 'special edition' is like someone calling attention to me that a boom mike is in frame.... once mentioned, it's hard NOT to view that flaw.... and then suddenly you notice a million other flaws and suddenly one is trained to be ocd on scenes rather than be transported into the story.
With a movie that had flaws that were so big it was hard to accept on first glance, I could see it only being a positive thing.
With a movie that had limited sfx tech (compared to later on) but all of the shots at the time were grade-A+ level state-of-the-art, it can be similar to watching the original King Kong film with frame by frame animation get replaced with a CGI ape.
But- knowing that this is a passion project and not for profit, it makes me curious.... but at the same time, I'm worried the experience will be like noticing a boom mike in the frame and never being able to see anything but the boom mike again if rewatching a film...

I hear you CAM. This is the sort of project I'd hate had it been a studio release, but I can not help admire as a fan project. I know this will never replace the official version so I am very keen to see it as an alternative "what if" and enjoy it for what it is. Had this been a backdoor replacement for the original it would be a different story completely. Luckily Superman isn't a George Lucas movie or likely would never have even gotten the Theatrical cut to bluray. Is there one movie of his he hasn't messed with after the fact? Kathryn posted over at OT.org with release info on and details on how to get the project from her. originaltrilogy.com/topic/Superman-The-Movie-The-Final-Cut/id/76503/page/1#1357251

I did sign up & ask about seeing it... But- it's kind of like seeing what Aftereffects software can do for the first time- especially if one has a bit of OCD like I can have at times--- one can go endlessly into 'fixing' and 'overfixing' down a rabbit hole of endless tinkering and changes. I can only imagine that's what happened to Lucas- but his crime imo is not that, but for not letting the original versions be restored and released as it was. If Star Wars was a low-budget thing, I guess I could understand... but with so many fans that have adored and worshipped (and paid for multiple viewings/etc.) the original trilogy, you'd think he would appreciate the fans' wishes a bit more.

Since it’s a fan thing it’s not officially replacing anything. I just see it as a labor of love. The kind of stuff we all do to some degree to express our fandom.

Fan cuts with so much effort put into it are amazing. I think even if it were official, the main thing that I liked about ET, Close Encounters, and Blade Runner is that the directors allowed the theatrical originals to exist in its best form. I think it's like going to a nice expensive restaurant versus the same old thing- once you go, what if you like it more? It's great, but then it's wholly possible that the restaurant you go to regularly won't taste as good by comparison... but that's definitely a superficial fun 'problem' to have. In any case, I'm excited to see the new version & wonder also if there will be other even more SII cuts from all around that suprise with new fx that could fill in some bits and scenes not shot.... the more the merrier, no?

Ignore previous post. I figured it out.
Watched it. On the whole, I still prefer the original.
This new one, the visuals reminded me a lot of Superman Returns.

I also prefer the original (well, the extended tv cut)- but there are bits and pieces that are really nice enhancements and... the amount of love and work put into it is commendable and I appreciate her sharing the work with the world. I'm to a degree a purist on STM- but... If it were possible to press a button and pick and choose the fx shots to insert into a 'pick your own version', off the top I'd pick the Jor-el hologram update, the running clouds, perhaps a couple of fx bits with the fortress- as a neat 'alternate cut' that would be a 'go to' personally. While some of the fx of the original might feel dated, I still prefer the majority of them- mainly because I feel like in many of the cases, the fx were state of the art at the time and had a certain look that all got filtered under one person's vision and final approval. With Superman II.... the look and feel of the fx are inconsistent, but not unexpected given two directors with different styles and intentions for their version of SII. I think Donner was very right in saying he hadn't the emotional distance to cut SII in a balanced way -but I've wondered if Stuart Baird might have been the right voice then to have given the 'final' cut of SII. But, I digress...

I wasn't crazy about the new version of krypton. Looked too much like earth.
And the opening credits added too much unnecessary background objects, like SR did. Less is more. The original waa sheer perfection.
I also prefer the theatrical cut and pacing. Extended scenes are interesting, but should remain cut out!

The original waa sheer perfection. I also prefer the theatrical cut and pacing. Extended scenes are interesting, but should remain cut out! I think like almost every fan cut I've seen- there are parts that make me stand up and go 'that's kind of interesting!' and let you experience a film I've seen a zillion times in a new way.... and then other parts that make me kind of shrug and prefer the original--- but it just goes to show how subjective the 'perfect' cut can be! The extended stuff is a mixed bag, much like the extended tv cut- but I always prefer too much to not enough generally speaking... and that's a whole other thread, I think. The theatrical cut and pacing I would have said is always superior...but.... There are some bits that were so good that I feel the movie isn't quite complete now after having seen them (the tunnel trial by fire, bullets, ice & the Supes flies in front of the rocket bit)- but the whole thing is: SII is ultimately I feel the one that needed the most help, with SIV a close second, for different reasons. Still- I can admire the passion and work put into the Final cut. A lot of hours put into it, for sure...

To be honest, at one point I switched computers and didn't have all the links backed up and kinda forgot about the boards. At the same time, I kinda bowed out because of the whole Mike Hill/Sculpture hate that happened back then. (For those that have never seen his work in person, pictures don't do justice. It may not look exactly like CR, but if that damn statue blinked I wouldn't be surprised at all) I'm starting to make my way back here as i'm getting time and with meeting up with Jim Bowers this past March for the Superman In Concert series in LA....the fan part of me kicked back in gear again "I'm always around"
