I dont think it is out of place in the movie. But i wonder if it would have been better having the actual song and not margot kidder's reading.

When I first heard it onscreen, I cringed a bit.... but on subsequent viewings, because of Margot's charm and skepticism on the surface, I read it as showing how childlike Lois might have been under the tough exterior.
Singing it as originally intended I think would have been really too much, though. I know it was mentioned that she did sing it initially, but the singing voice wasn't there, so Donner had her read it instead.
If they replaced it with Maureen singing it, it would have been I think just as distracting as I find much of Smallvile when they were using it to promote artists that didn't really have a connection to what was onscreen.
So--- I'm fine with it as is, with Margot 'sorta/kinda' singing it. But I'm definitely glad that it never happened again in any of the sequels.

I agree with CAM. I don’t love it but I don’t mind it either. If it was cut from the film it wouldn’t bother me but I still think it works rather well to give us Lois’s inner thoughts and POV. I definitely prefer Kidders spoken word version to the actual song. I think that would have been a disaster then and aged far worse by now. You have to really be careful with popular musical styles of the day in films like this. One thing that’s kept STM more timeless is the score and very little of a contemporary soundtrack.
