Hi Friends, Like you, I would like to see the TV edit of Superman II released on Blu-ray. Warner Archive tells me they can't find the print. Time will tell... Jim Attachments:

Dear Jim
Let's hope that they make the effort to find it!
But if they can't find it.....
They could recreate it using the Original camera negative of the theatrical cut as a template...and interweave that with fresh scans of the camera negative for the trims and cuts which comprise the TV edit......hopefully those can be found.
I just watched Rambo II on UHD.....a film which IMHO(but others are free to disagree!) is no where near SII in either artistic or corporate terms(technically it's pretty good though----which maybe the reason why it got given a UHD greenlight).
With regards to the theatrical....
SII was a financial behemoth...both in it's production and financial reception.
And despite Lester's contrivances it still has artistic merit to this day.....and in my opinion was a groundbreaker for 1981(or the late 70s early 80s trailblazers).
Technically it has issues....Pauline Kael complained that the 70mm blow up print she saw in 81' was super grainy and advised contemporary audiences to stick with the native 35mm presentations....and some other journalists noticed that those theatrical prints were bleached out!
And that was at the time of release!.......so maybe the original elements are in bad shape....seeing as they were never in great shape to begin with.
Obviously Michael Thau tinkered with some of those elements to produce the DC in 2005-06.
And the 35mm interpositive(used for the 2011 blu ray) seemed to be in good shape....so there is hope.
So hopefully they can reconstitute the TV edit for a blu ray release using said original camera negative materials----it would be a crime if those have not been preserved.

I am with you all the way. A WB employee has to champion the project for it to become a reality. We shall see what happens. I always remain hopeful.

It's disheartening to hear it's misplaced but I'm glad to know the reason it's not out already isn't that they have no interest in doing so or it's destroyed. Hopefully it shows up sooner rather than later.

It had to have been available at the time the Donner Cut was made since the deleted scenes for the Donner and Lester cuts were lifted straight from it. Shame to hear that something precious like that somehow gets misplaced.

Of course, I don't believe everything I'm told from WB. I'll keep nudging them...

Shame to hear that something precious like that somehow gets misplaced. If it turned out Richard Donner stole it and kept it, on one hand, I'd be highly disappointed that we would never get to see the bluray come out- on the other hand, another part of me would think: 'well, I guess it's poetic justice if Donner felt Lester stole HIS film'. (I'm totally kidding btw)

At least they're not saying that the WB dog ate it.
