That's awesome! Thanks for sharing- that's hilarious on the reporter's comment. It still hits me now and then how YOUNG Reeve was then. I never thought of 25 as being young until later on. Considering how much was thrown on a young actor's shoulders overnight, he really handled things with a lot of grace.

No worries CAM....you are welcome.....although real thanks goes to whoever videotaped and kindly uploaded that clip.....pretty good picture quality too for 78'. Regarding Reeve....totally agree with you. I personally think he was worthy of an Oscar nomination......there is good range in his performance, be it emotional and/or physical. Interesting that the 78' Oscar went to John Voight who played a wheel chair bound war veteran in Coming Home(an excellent movie BTW)....in other words the Academy recognized Voight's physical simulations in that chair.......but missed the fact that Reeve also stretched his physical skills in the harness to portray someone who could fly!

The story about Brando and the horse at 11:50 is really uncanny by how prophetic is was. It's so upsetting to think of what was going to happen.

The Academy Awards process for best actor mystifies me. On one hand, it's easy to say it's political.... but then on the other hand, I'll notice some very offbeat choices with actors who don't seem to be leading men or women that win or are nominated at times. Generally Scifi/fantasy didn't seem to get that much respect at the Oscars- there was Star Wars (that should have won over "Annie Hall"-yeesh) a year or so before that swept the field with all of its nominations, but at least Superman got 3 nods. The thing is: the Superman movies would not have worked at all without believing in its lead actor to carry it. At least it's nice to see Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert archived on youtube pointing out Reeve specifically for the success of the films. After hearing how much Siskel/Ebert's response affected Jim Carrey - I imagine there had to be someone who let Reeve know how much he was praised by Siskel and Ebert as well.

@cam
With regards to the Academy snubbing fantasy films......there was one glaring aberration from the norm:
Mary Poppins in 1964 which bagged best actress for Julie Andrews.
So if Andrews could win an Oscar for Poppins a full 14 years before 1978........Reeve at least deserved a nomination for Superman!!!!!

Also Alec Guiness was nominated for Ben Kenobi I believe in Star Wars also.

On a personal side note.....Poppins was the first film I saw at the Cinema in 1980 when it was re-issued here in the UK.....love that film to this day!
Another thought....Mary Poppins was only Julie Andrew's 2nd film!!!....just like Reeve with regards to STM.
So yeah...Reeve was hard done by.
Another observation.
Watching all those flicks from 1978 last summer in quick succession I took note of all the other young actors(Male/Female) who debuted (or had break out roles--like Walken) that year(many of them are still active today!): Steve Guttenberg(Boys From Brazil) Richard Gere(Days Of Heaven) Eric Roberts(King Of The Gypsies) Ken Foree(Dawn Of The Dead) Jamie Lee Curtis(Halloween) Chistopher Walken(Deer Hunter) John Travolta(Grease)
To be fair Walken and Travolta were hardly new even at that point, but solidified their stardom(Travolta) or kicked it into high gear(Walken).
The thing with Reeve is that despite being roughly the same age as Gere, Roberts & Travolta , was portraying a slightly older character in Supes....and making it so believable that that too went unnoticed by the academy!
To be fair some journalists did indeed promote Reeve for an Oscar nomination with the release of SII in 81'. But still no cigar for the great man.

I have a hunch that Hollywood voters take themselves a little too seriously and really fight tooth and nail to nominate actors for superheroes--- but bizzarely, two best actor 'wins' for the Joker- a comic book villain! At the same time, I'm not sure if Reeve helped in that department by saying in interviews that playing Superman wasn't much of a challenge for him as an actor versus other roles. I can get what he's saying, as the scripts were pretty broad, but.... so was the script for Alec Guiness in Star Wars! I remember reading an article in the old movie Magazine Premiere that talked about the voting and the short of it was how non-scientific and fairly arbitrary it was. That would explain how a 9-year old Anna Paquin could be an Oscar nominee versus other actors. It just seems VERY arbitrary.

Totally agree on the arbitrary factor with regards to nominations made by the academy.
How about this for a hypothetical and somewhat morbid scenario.
Imagine if Reeve had died just after the shooting of STM---but before it's theatrical release .....also imagine that he had completed all his work(ala Heath Ledger).....would the academy have given him a posthumous nomination or even an award!

Too hard to say. There's a funny article discussing how certain roles bag actors and actresses an Oscar- www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/02/oscar-winning-charactersI don't think there's a mention of superheroes, though I would have loved it if Hugh Jackman got one for Wolverine and Patrick Stewart got one for Xavier.

It is not with a certain sense of irony, that Reeve will always be associated with this Oscar winning performance:
