Very sad day. Big loss. It’ll be interesting to see the comments and retrospectives on him in the next couple of days.

Drew Struzan posted this on Twitter when discussing Donner and his work.

I do wonder if Richard Lester will come out and finally apologize or give any condolences.... I am suprised not to hear from Ilya Salkind, who actually was gracious in comments when discussing Donner post Superman II...

I bet Lester sat by his phone over the last 40 years working up the courage to call Donner and apologize. Every day he probably said "I'll call him tomorrow.. I'll call him tomorrow."
Well now it's too late.
I'm fortunate I got to see Mr Donner in person during a screening of STM and QA... he will be missed.

Thanks for putting this up. If there is any lesson for anyone passing, it's that time is shorter than you think and that you never know when it ends-

Outside of some interview a few years ago I haven’t heard anything from him in years. Ilya Salkind released a short but nice statement.

Good question. After Donner's passing Snyder concedes that STM induced Snyder to believe in the myth(at least that is my interpretation). But in another interview a few years back ,Snyder complained that Reeve's smile at the camera at the end of STM ruined the illusion for him as he sat in the cinema in 1978. Referring to Donner's 1978 movie, Snyder says he was against creating a film that had any hint of a superhero who saved people with a wink and a smile. "At the end of the movie, Christopher Reeve looks in the camera and smiles. In 1978 that made me crazy.
"I was 12 years old but it made me say 'why would you do this? You just ruined it for me because I believed that was real until that moment and now I know I'm watching a movie'." www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22894714Whatever, I think it's fair to say that STM(and Donner) has left a huge impression on Snyder.

Apparently, it made Snyder believe he should have a lot of fun killing off Jimmy Olsen in a cruel and unnecessary way... ugh. But- I may be being too harsh. Snyder didn't put a knife in Donner's back creatively like another director- but it is weird to see all the mixed comments from him plus his hyper-violent take on the DC universe which is a bit at odds with Donner's for sure.
