Over the years I was always on the look out for a contemporary(1980-81) Reeve interview(TV or print) where he addressed the quality of the cut SII Brando footage.
Well that search is over as this interview has finally surfaced after 41 years....done with an Australian crew. In fact SII came out in Australia in late 1980(4 & 6 months before it hit the UK and US respectively)and this interview was meant to coincide with that Aussie theatrical release. Apparently Reeve's press agent had forgotten to remind him that he was due for an interview that day......so he was caught by surpise when the journalist turned up at his door. He went onto conduct the interview but to my eyes...he looks a bit pissed off! Still a great chat though and he talks about the Brando footage @ 19:21 in the video below:

That actually was a pretty good look for Reeve- suprised that he never used the beard for any of his film appearances!

He had director and script approval... so... that's on him. I still feel SIV is superior to SIII in many ways besides budget and fx- but it's sad that Reeve chose to go along with Lester and that script. If he had chosen better, there could have been a few more well-budgeted Superman Reeve films before flying to Canon...

I think he got the best he could out of III considering he wasn’t a writer. I find actors rarely know how to really make a script better even if they recognize it’s not good. III could have been much worse. He’d already walked and there was only so much he could have done. IV was screwed because Canon screwed everyone over on that one. IV’s the better film script wise despite its problems. III tops IV on a technical level. I still prefer IV but the evil Superman and the Lana stuff is better than anything in IV. Affleck had script input on BvS and look how that turned out.

Affleck had script input on BvS and look how that turned out. Sadly, it seems to be true- a good actor doesn't necessarily equate to being able to recognize a good script or know how to fixup a bad one. Truthfully, the script for STM is good, but I don't know if I would say it's bulletproof. The moments and subtleties were brought out by Donner. As a straight up example, the Mank-scripted souffle scene was directed by Lester, but can't exactly say that there's a lot of magic in that one scene. But back to the topic- For my money, even with all that's against SIV's production and even some of the performances sometimes a bit 'off'..... there's still more for me to enjoy in SIV than SIII. But- in looking at Reeve's age at the time and knowing he was still a newbie to Hollywood, I can only imagine the stress he had to have on himself to make all the right moves. I'm probably too hard on him not taking into consideration the age and what choices may or may not have been available for directors for SIII. He probably thought of SII's reviews and forgave a lot of what Lester did with SII (Later on, it's notable that in an interview asking what films he had done that would stand the test of time- Reeve didn't count SII as one of them, but STM and Somewhere in Time) because of Lester's reputation with the Beatles' movie and THree Musketeers. But- it's also worth nothing that he went to Donner and Mank, but not Lester for SIV.
