Wanted to wait until the post was approved elsewhere- so, I received this wonderful package from Jim Bowers.... even the packaging was carefully double and triple bubble wrapped. I had high expectations, (as you'll read in my post) but this went BEYOND that. Here it is:
Yesterday .I received this AMAZING package from Jim Bowers- I knew I was expecting great things from the preview bits of the book, but from all the careful packaging alone- this book is truly a piece of ART with a giant 'A' !!!
Spent an hour and a half just looking at all the pages (I haven't even gotten to reading it all yet, too!)- and just marvelled at how magnificent this book is.
I've bought other 'coffee table' books on movies I've loved- but this truly, truly stands SO far apart not suprisingly with the love and care given to each page- also I shouldn't have been suprised how PACKED each and every page is. (One special joy to mention among many are the many film strips of on-set photos that mesmerize and tell a separate moment or story about a particular shooting day!)
I should say- I'm actually extremely finnicky when it comes to page layouts- and so with great pleasure I have to say how much I LOVED how the photos were laid on on the subject matter. A great amount of the pictures that I would have loved given the full page or large size expansion got it in this work of art- and what was extra nice was seeing the rarer images (many never seen before! 🙂
From Jim's aesthetic as a photographer, the book is just so lovingly done- I know I could have easily spent three or four hours poring over and apprecating all the beauty here. The book is also twice as thick as I imagined it would be- I'm not sure if it's from the premium paper stock or amount of pages, or both, but LOVE it!!!
A few thoughts automatically came up, though:
#1: Just a simple curiousity what the differences was/were on version 1.0 version versus version 2.0...
#2: Excited for the possibility of additional volumes- (Though going through the book, you go- WHOA... this had to take SO MUCH TIME figuring out what to keep/ omit/ enlarge) though what's here- if it's the only one--- goodness, it's a one-book museum of Donner's millions of pieces of film and years of making Superman-
#3: It put a giant smile on my face knowing that Donner was alive to see this magnificent tribute to him. Maybe I'm sentimental, but tears almost welled up finishing this book- Donner was wounded so immensely by being let go for SII- I imagine this had to have made him swell up with joy and fill that hole- as this is the ultimate family photo album of all his great memories making this filim.
Thank you so much JIm for all the love and attention you put into every 'frame' of this book and thank you SO much for allowing me to obtain a copy of this. Superman the Movie was noted by a movie critic as being so special because of Richard Donner's love and perfectionism. This book feels like all that wrapped up in one package!!!! 🙂
