Looking forward to this.
Although some of the Bluray.com followers are trying to find out if STM 4K in this new set is indeed a fresh remaster....or just the same disc from 2018.
Whatever the truth.....can't wait to get me hands on these bad boys when they come out.....yes that even includes SIV!

Oh nice!-that artwork on the steel books looks very seductive.......and I am a sucker for original artwork which is strangely absent on catalogue title releases.......just umming and ahhing over the slightly exorbitant price. I still have my original VHSs for the artwork though!-lol Consensus seems to be that the 4K for STM is the same disc that was released in 2018.....which is causing quite a stir on the Bluray.com forum. We will see. Ahhhh CAM .....you need to get yaself a 4K TV man!.....or a projector like me! The advantages are there but they are discreet....as opposed to the monumental jump from VHS to DVD....and to a lesser extent....DVD to Blu Ray. Color gamut and luminance are 4Ks main advantage.....aswell as higher frequency detail.....but this is only apparent when you do side by sides. Still....when you do a get a 4K set.....your Supes discs will be ready to go!

Appreciate the info- thanks man! For my part, after reading the contents of all the discs- Suprised that the STM disc doesn't seem to contain the Donner/Mank old commentary, but only the Salkind/Spengler commentary- Bummed that the Donner cut isn't the longer alternate one- Also- that there's not ONE single new deleted scene or extra!!! Though.... I'm HOPING (though it probably won't happen) that they upgrade the quality of the existing SII deleted scenes...

Every special feature will be a port of the Blu-ray. The 4K discs are going to be the only new thing you’re getting which only hold the films and the only features will be the commentaries.

After so many disappointments, I didn't really hold out that much hope for anything new or upgraded. But- still thought to put wishes out there, just for the sake of it. Having said that- I know I should still be grateful for the surprises that came with that glorious Collection steelbox around the time Superman Returns was released- And-the out-of-nowhere awesome 3 hour extended cut on blu ray for STM! If the new 4k sells well, I HOPE HOPE HOPE but don't expect we'll get the SII international extended or any new SII or SIV footage....

The only thing worth wishing for is that the sound mixing and the visual effects of The Donner Cut of Superman II were handled more competently and that we’ll see a significant change in quality that recently occurred with the new Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Warners should be aware that fans like APRICEPRODUCTIONS and Selutron did way better work than Thau was able to achieve with an actual budget. It barely was considered to be a feature film in 2006 and is pretty unacceptable today.

Will Selutron's S2 be part of this box set?
He has had 17 years to get it done

It barely was considered to be a feature film in 2006 and is pretty unacceptable today. From the start, it seemed there was a lot of commenting on Thau's side that there was not much staff or money available leftover after paying the Brando estate for the Donner Cut.... but.... even if -assuming it's all accurate- the results kind of speak for themselves. If it was just one flub or a couple of flubs, it would be one thing.... but.... with so many horrible edit choices throughout, right now the International extended cut feels like the best "Donner" cut with the added material. We don't know the behind the scenes specifically on how much freedom Thau was given (Was it a committee that had to approve of most of the changes? Were there other roadblocks we're unaware of? )..... but the fan edits give strong evidence that - with no money - it definitely should have been a better final product than what we were given officially.

Will Selutron's S2 be part of this box set? He has had 17 years to get it done That would be nice. Bizzarely, wasn't there a mention here about the official German steelbook package for DUNE (1984) that included an unauthorized fan cut??? Ultimately, I'm guessing that with studios, it needs some champion at a certain paygrade at WB that could get a decent fixup of SII - or even a fixup of previous STM bluray/dvd releases. With Star Trek: The MOtion Picture, Mike Matessino has a great reputation - and somehow not suprised if his name was attached to the great director's cut that came out recently. It'd be easy to suggest Mike Matessino to get involved with a SII restoration/fixup..... but..... who knows how different things are that work at WB versus Paramount? Anyhow.... crossing fingers we get a great suprise like the 3 hour STM blu ray out of the blue for SII soon....

Word is out that the new 4K stand alone release of Superman: The Movie is available to order on Amazon and it’s been reported that there’s no change in picture quality and the 5.1 original theatrical audio has been swapped with a 2.0 mix. So, they’ve downgraded this new release as opposed to updating.

On the flip side, mainly I'm getting it for those steelbooks.... but, one day, maybe will save up for a 4k tv & player.... so my expectations weren't all that high to begin with...

So, they’ve downgraded this new release as opposed to updating. Goddam! Having said that, the 1991 laserdisc had a 2.0 mix which could be decoded to 4.1......and to my ears, it sounded darn good. Better than the 2.0 mix on the 2011 Blu. Someone said that the mix on that 1991 laserdisc was in fact the 70mm soundtrack , encoded onto a matrixed 4.1 for said laserdisc. If that is true , then this 2.0 mix on the new STM 4K, could be that mix from the laserdisc, and hence the original 70mm soundtrack. Seems to be a bit confusion as to whether the 5.1 mix on the 2018 disc was the original 70mm track that played in theaters in 78'.........or was a test mix with split surrounds.....that never made it to the actual cinemas. Or it was the split surround mix which was backwards compatible with the then available equipment and was played as a 4.2 track in said theaters. very confusing lol!!!! Either way that 2018 5.1 mix was great. Sad to see it go. But hey it's Warners!

(A number of times, hiding in drapes in between screenings so that I wouldn't have to pay the multiple times). The whole thing made it extra cool- particularly the excitement and bonding that happened in the long lines for it. And- thank goodness it was at the best theatre in town at the time.

The new transfer of the Lester cut of Superman II is now available on YouTube. Right off the bat I was pissed at the poor imitation of the Saul Bass Warners logo. Why can’t they simply just use the real thing?!

I wonder if it all gets upgraded for download without re=purchasing... hm...

STM in 70mm would have been quite the experience. Envy you on that one. Lol......hanging behind the drapes inbetween showings! Me and some chums just sat in our seats while the stewards cleaned up all the spilt popcorn cups and cigarette stubs inbetween showings of Jaws3D. Did the same for Supergirl too(heck yeah!). Think I said it another thread.......we had a matinee' showing of STM in 1984 at our local cinema in 35mm. Print was in good shape and was in another league compared to the crummy TV broadcasts,V2000(only ever sold in europe) and VHS copies lurking about at that point in time. Always remember the deep blue of the credits and deep blacks of the starfield behind. Also it was huge! Made those video transfers look like complete s**t! Inspired me to one day, when the tech got good enough to get into home theater. And here we are 40 years later.............and WB seemed determine to botch this new release as best they can!

Why can’t they simply just use the real thing?! Thanks for the heads up but damn.......that's annoying! Hopefully the rest of the transfer is half decent. One hypothesis could be that the 35mm original negatives/interpositives for that logo section are in bad shape.....hence the reason for the new synthetic recreation. But you would think it would be fairly easy to do CG wise. Still.....I have a blu ray copy of Coppola's The Outsiders. And the Red Saul Bass logo is at the beginning and it looks good! WB are all over the place.

Thanks- I was 'lucky' in that where I live, there used to be 3 HUGE screen movie theatres that weren't too far during the 'gold rush' of scifi/fantasy movies- starting with the OG Star Wars, then Superman, Star Trek, the Speilberg films, etc.- The other thing is - the vibe then. It WAS like a concert-like feeling during that initial 'rush' of scifi/fantasy - and no cellphones. Very much geek bonding waiting in 2-hour lines to see any of these shows! Since the time of the first Avengers & cellphones- (and increased number of multiplex movie theatres)- not so much....

They should update based on prior experiences. Everything is in a weird transitional period now. Superman II on YouTube is the new transfer while Apple TV is showing the transfer from the DVD era. The Donner Cut of II is still the extended version for now.
It shouldn’t be hard for them to pull it from another source. There’s versions of it on YouTube that could be utilized. It’s hard to describe what’s off about it but it’s definitely off and they used different font for the text at the bottom. Once you’ll see it, you’ll see it. It’s frustrating to see because they did a pretty on point recreation for the latest Christmas Story sequel.
The sound mix for Lester’s Superman II didn’t sound like whole new sounds like what was done with the first film and I haven’t looked at Superman III yet, but have watched Superman IV on Apple TV and while it boasts a new transfer, it has a new problem with the sound mix. Apparently the soundtrack is using inferior takes from the German recording of the score instead of the ones from England. This is very apparent in the opening credits and in the flying sequence.
It’s really a crying shame that they made such a blunder like this because the recent remaster of IV’s score would have had its time to shine in this new sound mix but instead they decided to make it sound WORSE than what we’re accustomed to.
