Will superhero films box office go north or south in 2024?

Placing bets for 'fun'....
I personally hope that the Gunn-verse and a revamped MCU bring in a fresh era-

Though.... if the MCU lasted 20 years of uninterrupted box office success... even 10 years based on how many interconnected films they had is something- let alone 20--- that's still darned impressive...

On the flip side-
Not many studios can (or want) to sustain $200 million dollar (plus marketing) losses-
and I'm assuming EVERY one of these was in the $200 range for the budget-

DC side:
* Flash (which I mostly loved)- $270 million worldwide- $100 domestic
* Blue Beetle (which was ok)--- $129 million worldwide- $72 domestic
* Shazam 2 (good, but meh)----- $133 million worldwide- $57 domestic
* Black Adam (eh,JLA bits nice) $393 million worldwide- $168 domestic

Bizzare that the failure of Black Adam actually grossed the most-

MCU side:
* Black Widow------------------ $379 million worldwide- $183 domestic
* Eternals--------------------- $402 million worldwide- $164
* Shang Chi-------------------- $432 million worldwide- $224
* Ant man 3-------------------- $476 million worldwide- $214
* Marvels---------------------- $202 million worldwide- $83

The ones that were attached (creatively) to Endgame-or-wrapping up series-

* GOTG 3 ---------------------- $845 million worldwide- $358
* Dr. Strange 2---------------- $955 million worldwide- $411
* Spiderman: No Way Home------- $1,921 million worldwide- $814

* Endgame--------------------- $2,799 mil worldwide/ $858 domestic
* Infinity War---------------- $2,052 worldwide/ $678 domestic
* Captain Marvel-------------- $1,132 mil worldwide/ $426 domestic
* Cap America-Civil War ------ $1,155 worldwide/ $408 domestic

It's not the full sampling... but- in even a quick glance- Marvel (overall) still does better than DC- but.... should Marvel slash their budgets in half and keep going? Or what thoughts can be derived from looking at this?

It’s not really as important a question since fewer superhero films are coming out in 2024 compared to previous years. Between films getting pushed because of the strike, films getting pushed to get reworked, and other reasons we will be getting less superhero movies next year.

With the exception of Venom 3 I expect Sonys stuff to do soft business. Deadpool 3 will probably do very well. Beyond that there’s not much from DC or Marvel studios.

The real test will be in 2025. That’s when the MCU will have some major releases that will impact where they go from there and we will see the first offerings crafted from top to bottom from James Gunn. Of course Marvel should keep going. They should cut their budgets for certain films but more importantly improve their development and pre production process. I’d cut back on projects more than anything.

As for the last few years I think it’s only fair to compare 2020 on so no Endgame in the mix. You forgot DC films from the same time like Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman 1984. Even with those included Marvel still far outpaced their distinguished competition.

As far as Superman Returns it only feels fair to compare it to Batman Begins for a number of reasons and they did similar worldwide box office. SR just had a bigger price tag stuck onto it.
