Gunn’s “Superman” Gets New Title, Shield

Today marked the first official day of photography on James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy,” well-timed as it’s also the Superman character’s birthday, and the director celebrated the news with a couple of reveals.

First up, he confirmed the title is ditching the ‘Legacy’ part – it will now simply be known as “Superman”. He explains on Threads:

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025. Happy Birthday, Clark!”

He also debuted the character’s shield from the film which is a chunkier and old-fashioned ‘S’. The close-up shot shows some snow and surprisingly subdued colors.

The actual news follows both widely circulated and AI-generated images on social media of star David Corenswet in costume and a report about the film boasting a ridiculously large budget – the latter Gunn himself shooting down as complete baloney.

The film co-stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor among many others. It opens in cinemas July 11th 2025 and is the first title in Gunn’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” initiative.

Wait the S Shield is all wrong! It's way too big isn't brown enough and it's not covered in tiny S-shields!

To this day, I'm open to be proven wrong (I loved the original trailer to MOS, not the movie)- but so far, only felt that Donner and Singer had the best take & the best update take....

Some of the sillier stuff, like multiple 's's on the costume, duller color, etc- I give a pass to, because they're pretty minor changes compared to what was to follow- and he kept the Donner stuff (mostly) as canon.

You mean the costume(s)? The Superman suit in the Donner film was classic. So classic that others basically stuck to it for years. Perfect colors and a placement of each element. I don’t hate the SR costume but it had too many flaws and made design choices that were the polar opposite of the STM costume and it didn’t work even if SR wasn’t some vague quasi continuation of the Donner films.

I didn’t mind the texture on the SR costume since that’s par for the course these days but almost every other part of the suit had some flaw that stuck out. Routh’s suit for Crisis fixed every problem the SR had and kept some of the elements that worked. It’s probably the best modern Superman suit made yet. The only problem with it was the overly done muscle padding.
