So, I recently bought this book called DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore, which contains two of the most popular Superman stories that I've heard of: Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow? And For the Man Who Has Everything.I REALLY liked them, especially FTMWHE, which I found very compelling and interesting. Now I understand why Alan Moore is considered a really good writer. He IS great. I also liked WHTTMOT, but I think it's overrated. I found it a little bit boring and too bland in some parts, BUT that ending rocked! So for those who have read these stories, which one did you like the most and why? And for those who HAVEN'T read them, what are you waiting for? Especially if you are a Superman fan.

i go with " for the man who.." because it is so wickedly awesome to see wonder woman and batman TRY to handle mogul- they are incredibly brave - it is so valiant!! its like a classical story from mythology . and the tragedy of superman pulling himself away from his dreamland- it is so " temptation of christ " .
but the payoff:
superman effing destroys mogul with his bare hands. i have goosebumps - seriously.
they made this into an episode of the timmverse justice league.

That's the part I liked the best about this story, to see that Superman deepest wish is to have a family of his own, to be a father. Just like in SR. Poor guy, he does soo much for the world and gets so little in return. It really is like this: the bigger the power, the bigger the responsibility and the sacrifice. I only have the first and last season of JL/JLU, and that epi is not in those. Does the epi have the same name? I must see it!

it would be a staggeringly EPIC movie if it was adapted to screen.
maybe do the godfather2 trick and have 2 timelines going on- superman vs. mongul/warworld and superman on krypton living all happy
..and in the last act the two merge as superman realises he's been trapped and mongul is getting revenge for the destruction of warworld.
it is too good. it'l never happen.

IMO, They REALLY Screwed the pooch on the JLU Cartoon. LOTS of shit was left out and was changed drastically. I mean, there's a REASON why the flower was destroyed in the comic and why Superman said somberly "Perhaps it was for the best." It's because nothing really ended up how he thought it should have. He couldn't stop people from getting injured, his father never was recieved as a hero for his now false alarm of krypton exploding, and on the top of it all he finds out that the only good parts of his existence aren't real. Would it have ended up right if he grew up on krypton? Probably not. Perhaps it WAS for the best.
On another note, I believe I voted for Alan's 2 parter finale on the pre-crisis superman as everything came to a point. Superman struggling with his secret life ripped apart, his friends and loved ones compromised, and shows in the end of what he stands for. Dark moments in it, but not in a way that its subversive. A++
Also, did you check out Alan Moore's Swamp Thing issue with Superman? Or his version of Supreme?

You could feel for Swamp Thing; being all alone and different. And no, I haven't read Supreme. Someone from another forum told me some things about it. Do you like it?

I loved both stories Alan Moore has written for Superman ("For the Man Who Has Everything" in Superman Annual # 11 (1985) and the 2-part "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" from Superman # 423 and Action Comics # 583 in 1986). These are by far truly some of the greatest Superman stories ever published, especially from the 1980s. This is a small sample of what Alan Moore could do with the world's greatest super hero if given a chance. "For the Man Who Has Everything" was just a great story about what if Superman had a life and family on Krypton had Krypton not exploded, this seemed to be Superman's inner most great desire from the Black Mercy plant. Moore's finale for the pre-Crisis Superman era was dark, but a powerful story, and a surprising ending as well.
Alan Moore's run as writer of Rob Liefeld's created super hero, Supreme, was a clear tribute to the classic Silver Age Superman comic book era of the 1950s-1960s, as guided by then editor Mort Weisinger. Moore revamped Supreme as a homage to Superman, and may have been his only closest chance on creating Superman-like stories. Moore's Supreme stories is good stuff.
I have not read the Superman & Swamp Thing team-up that Moore wrote from an issue of DC Comics Presents # 85 from 1985 yet.

^^Jor-L..... damn man, you should be a comicbook writer or something! You're such a good storyteller! And you have such great imagination! Gazer...Moore and Maggin aren't trying to do the same thing. I don't think Moore could have written hundreds of Superman stories the way Maggin did. He just wrote 2 of the best! Maggin understands what makes Superman tick. He gets the Clark/Superman duality like nobody else. He gets what makes him human AND what sets him apart. . thats very flattering 'gazer , but VAL is correct- its alan moore that is staggeringly brilliant and its a shame he didnt do more , but on the other hand magiin was consistantly VERY GOOD while being very prolific. my only point is that , if properly executed , the superman vs warworld story would be EPIC .

For The Man Who Has Everything. I just felt it flowed a little more naturally. Both are awesome stories though.

They couldn't use Robin for legal reasons.
And the continuity issue is true. Its the same reason they changed the way the used Doomsday.
All things considered it was a pretty good adaptation but much like Watchmen or the little bit they did with TDKR some stuff had to be changed.
