I don't understand how WB and DC would tell Nolan of all people no but give Snyder the ok to do some of the stupid sh!t he did. Nolan should have had far more clout and trust. Killing Batman would have been so much more impactful. Sometimes they ending is fitting. Bixbys Banner and jackmans Logan proved that sometimes these characters deserve a finite definitive ending. In Nolans world Batman is an idea, more than a man. Even if Wayne died Batman would live on. Nothing would have shown that point better. Sometimes DC's interference ruins some great stuff. I can only imagine how much better JLU and the rest of the DCAU would have been if WB had let them do what they wanted. I agree.... while it probably had no way to be practical, would have been awesome to at least have had a director's cut on blu ray/dvd. Or at least it would have been nice to have had the script released for print or adapted for comics. (Assuming it was allowed to get to the script stage) I think if "Logan" had come out first, Nolan's original idea would have had a somewhat better chance. On the flip side, I could see some worry about the toys being sold on characters that die in the movies. (I scratched my head a bit with the Rogue One characters were allowed to all be killed off under Disney's ok, while they put out the same action figures.)

I've never seen that as an issue. Kids want their favorite characters to recreate moments from the movies or they can make up their own stories. That's s kids imagination.
Vader and obi wan are dead but they're still getting toys. Same with old Han from TFA.
DC doesn't like changes to the status quo in other media. That's why they veto certain things. It sucks but you wouldn't think they'd have that much power in the TIME WARNER hierarchy.

Probably a little of both but I don't think Star Wars merchandise is moving as fast as it used to. That's just my observation. The films are making big money but I wonder how invested consumers are in these new charectes outside of the movies.

I know I see a lot of adult collectors buzz about the Star Wars section each time I go by a Target shop... with the new characters, I don't know if they'll get the same love in the long run...

www.darkhorizons.com/affleck-still-wants-to-direct-a-batman-film/He's in he's out he's in...wish he'd just commit either way but I can see why WB wouldn't want him to say for sure that he's out. Obviously he wanted to direct but I guess he didn't like something behind the scenes. Does he want to stay now or is he just being a team player until they announce for sure what plans are?

From knowing that Routh only found out about not being included in SR 2 from the internet...
And from reading how Brosnan was teased about returning as Bond up until the last minute, then told they were replacing him---
It's possible that communications and the protocol is so messed up at the studios, that maybe Affleck is just trying to roll with however WB/DC decides to turn at any given minute.
He might be committed, but maybe it's the studios that are constantly indecisive- maybe moreso with WB?

I totally think that's true. They have no idea what they're doing and most of these people probably find out what's going on much later than you'd think. Part of the reason Affleck is so back and forth is probably because wb promised him one thing and then it changed. Like the whole release date issue with The Batman.

I've heard before that movies with the smaller budgets go through pretty smoothly at the studios- that it's the big tentpoles that have everyone quaking in their feet, and constantly second-guessing every decision .... which is why the Marvel Studios machine again is so amazing overall.

We’ve seen it a lot recently. Deadpool and Logan are great examples. Most of these movies need to be made for less. I’d cap all these films at 250 mil and most would be made for under 200 million. Heck I’d make more films for under 100 mil.
Marvel studios budgets have been on average smaller than WBs dc movie budgets. $200-250 million has been pretty regular for DC while Marvel regularly keeps most of their films under 200 million

I'm sure that every studio is eyeing Kevin Feige and wondering what the secret is/was to an effective production. But then again, Speilberg has been known to keep on-budget and things smooth ever since the '1941' debacle.

I was just thinking that yesterday. I might try to go see last jedi today. That was Disney’s least troubled Star Wars production and now it’s getting some controversy. Feige is Disney’s mvp right now. He’s delivering when a lot of producers aren’t right now. Why is Kathleen Kennedy not having the success Feige is?

You mean the reshoots on Solo and Rogue One? So far everything has made money under Disney’s new SW films, so I think she’s doing ok- but I do wonder if “Last Jedi”s fan split is hurting Disney’s faith in her behind the scenes....

They’ve all made money (just like the prequels) but there’s just been all kinds of behind the scenes chaos on most of the Disney SW movies to the point that its getting ridiculous. Then there’s Tranks firing and Trevorrows firing. What’s going on? All that should be mostly ironed out before filming. They’ve reshot most of Solo. I figure the quality will probably be ok even though I don’t have much interest in a young Han Solo prequel film.

If it's not Ford, then it should be out-of-the box hilarious--- which I think Lord and Miller might have provided. Makes me think gf how/why Edgar Wright might have been pushed out of Antman.

If they were on the same page and then one party changed their minds the wronged side has a valid claim. I was curious to see what they were going to do even though I’m not a huge fan of theirs. The LEGO movie and LEGO Batman were kinda overrated to me (shows how far great comedy has fallen in the last 20 plus years when these guys are work is considered the best) but it would have been interesting to see them do something different from Disney’s usual Star Wars formula. Just how different is the question. If it’s not Ford CAM it could also blow up in their face and maybe they should have left it alone. He’s been a tough act to follow on all his most iconic roles. Guess we’ll find out with Solo come may. They couldn’t have just deaged Ford though. Would have cost fortune. The best example of the technology is Blade Runner. 2049 and it’s still not there yet. That’s why I think it’s a tough spot no matter what way they try to make a young Han Solo movie.

That’s probably part of it but there’s a lot going on behind the scenes at WB that’s driving all this. There are rumors that Wan threatened to leave Aquaman at one point. There’s a reason Matt Reeves negotiated so tough in the press. Even if Afflecks drinking and rehab weren’t issues he’d probably still be pretty dissatisfied. There’s no plan there which means there’s a lot of uncertainty.

Yeah, I'm not a Lord/Miller fan either but as you alluded to, just some deviation from the Disney formula could be interesting. I have no issue with Ron Howard, he's a competent film maker. Nothing of his really grabs my attention though. I still haven't seen an Edgar Wright film that I didn't enjoy. A shame that we didn't get to see his voice come through in Ant Man.

You're right.... but maybe (if it's a one-off) they can have a de-aged Ford for just a minute or two at the end before they go to Mos Eisley (and/or restore the deleted bit of Han with a girl on his arm before they meet Luke). It's definitely a risk and mixed bag when you have other actors play iconic roles established by other actors. I was happily surprised when they were able to make McAvoy and Fassbender the original Charles and Magneto. Having DOFP just was a wonderful 'seal the deal' movie in cementing them in those roles. SUCH a pity that JLaw decided to continue and not end her role as Mystique after Apocalypse. (Perhaps the behind the scenes joke/arrangement that 'all three agree to the next one, or not at all' has some truth to it.... ugh)

Ron Howard’s made some great films in a broad variety of genres but he’s not an auteur. That could be seen as a positive or a negative but that’s one reason (along with his long association with George Lucas and Lucasfilm) that he was chosen to take over. They knew they could trust him to deliver the film they wanted. Wright was on Antman since like 2005 and what happened there was the marvel cinematic universe evolved past what he wanted to do. I don’t blame either side for that. He had things he wanted to do and Marvel had things they wanted to do an they just couldn’t agree. The smart thing was to make the break before filming. You can still feel some of Wright’s influence all over that films script.

It was immediately obvious what we were looking at in rogue one. It took me a second to figure out what I was seeing in Blade runner 2049. At first I thought it was archival footage then a body double but as the scene went on it became more obvious. They could pull off a young ford for brief shots or scenes. I have no doubt there. It’s when it’s required to be more longer scenes is when it falls apart. Another actor taking on a role like that is why I’m against recasting Carrie Fisher in episode 9. She was so iconic on that role that recasting would be a distraction. Solo is different because it’s a youger version but still the comparisons are going to be there.

Imo- Disney should do a. special 'else worlds' in animation for what would have happened for the next Star Wars had Fisher lived- I think there would be enough interest for at least a 'straight to dvd' sale.... though with the SW fans split, now, who knows what conversations are happening at the Mouse studio behind closed doors. With the next Star Wars (if it was up to me): Bring in another Star Wars icon- I say Lando Calrissian (While Billy Dee is still alive)- as well as figure out a smart way to have a real role for Mark Hamill as the ghost Jedi (I think it can be done with an arc, but it's a delicate thing to execute without being obnoxious). To me, the more connections to the original actors and trilogy will keep me returning for more tickets. Recasting I agree would be a big distraction, but I'm hoping that they write REALLY well to make the follow up just as natural as what they may have originally planned when Fisher was alive. Right now- I'm still not really sold on the new three characters. With Luke- we started with him as a farm boy on that desert planet. We don't really have that much history with anyone (only told in backstory and quick flashbacks) outside of Rey. Luke I argue was always the 'counterpoint' for the original trilogy. Rey (to me) is not strong enough a character to buy into as my guide. Anyhow- good that we'll find out in two years. Hopefully it's a decent script, particularly if JJ Abrams (ug) is directing. But, it's got to be weird for JJ to return to a series that got turned on its head by a previous director! Will JJ retcon Rian Johnson's retcons? That'll be fun to see....
