Yeah, would have been great watching him evolve and improve during the sequels after an impressive debut, but alas.

So they padded his face and neck too?! He had a "pencil" neck too IMO, not helped that it looked like he was being choked by the suit. No joke Legsy, disappointing he wore a padded suit to start off with; Lacey Warfield would have killed for those shoulder pads! Like legsy said, Brandon got in great shape for the role, but due to the suit's material he had to wear a padded suit. I honestly don't see what's so disappointing about it, especially since we the fans have seen how big he looked without it in the RTK documentary. Hey, George Reeves wore one too if I remember well, and it was more than just a padded one but an actual muscle suit. But I don't hear anyone complaining about it. I think some poeple just keep on complaining because they can. You know, I could pick the previous Superman actors' physiques apart if I try; they were only human and also had flaws in their bodies, and came up short to most Superman comicbook representations. Yes, even Chris Reeve. He had a great look, no doubt, but it wasn't exactly 'perfect' either. At least to me he wasn't, but I don't keep on complaining or joking about it because nobody is perfect. I think these actors (Chris, Dean, Brandon. Not sure about George) worked so hard on their bodies to get in such great physical shape that I'm just very thankful for that. They looked very strong, toned and athletic and I'm content with that. jimbo said, His neck would have looked so much better if his suit was like Sebastian's latest manip. He looks garroted in some shots.True. The neckline was to high, I agree.

Firstly, Reeves was in a low budget 1950s TV series that had a stop start production and it would have been very difficult for him to maintain the same build for almost a decade. Routh had to get in shape and stay in shape for about 9 months max. If Reeve did it, so could Routh. Seeing him in a doco is not good enough; we want to see the real thing on the big screen. He had no physical presence because his build was obvioiusly fake; those shoulder pads looked unnatural. Reeve actually looked like he could shoulder press the San Andreas fault and I was completley sold in that shot, but with Routh, any physical bits of business looked fake.
If he does another one, I recommend around 30lbs more muscle, particularly the shoulders, neck/traps, upper chest and arms (oddly, his legs looked right unless they too were padding). If I trained him, I get him looking like a Superman, enough to throw away any padding.
Double your food intake Routh and start building now incase WB do happen to make the call.

That makes zero sense, sorry. Superman's strenght comes FROM the sun NOT from his muscles. So no matter how big his muscles may look, it isn't enough to lift a plane, much less to press the San Andreas fault. For instance, I think Brandon really sold his lifting of the island scene; everything about it worked for me really well. I could see the struggle and determination on his face. He totally sold it and made it feel real. And his chest looked big during it. To me both Reeve and Routh looked like Superman in their movies. Full stop. I think they both looked big and strong and supermanish. BUT there are scenes where both look average as well. To each their own.

That scene made no sense to start off with
The guy usually collapses near Krypronite and now he's lifting a fucking island?
The film loses credibility regarding the mythology right there.
Gazer, do you really want to see an unnatural looking build with an obviously transparent "muscle suit"? Its cheating!

Gazer is completely enamored with Routh so I wouldn't try to challenge that. It's like trying to convince a guy that Megan Fox isn't all that.

Pity it was all padding.
I don't blame Routh himself, but the producers should have made him look more natural. Dean Cain and Gerard whatsisname looked more natural.

I blame the costume designer for using miliskin!
Use lycra or spandex next time. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Russ I know you are big time into muscles & working out & big actors & all, but, honestly, theres never a moment in SR where I look at him & I can tell theres any padding.
He always looks perfectly like Superman to me.

The shoulder pads were a little obvious. It's all about the design of the suit. Here's a picture of Bomer wearing the SR suit with the padded suit.

It wasn't ALL padding. In fact, the padding was very thin and it was used only for definition. It wasn't a muscle suit. We ALL KNOW damn well that he trained hard and gained lots of muscle for the film. So, why do you keep on complaining about it? You make it sound as if he was a tooth pick during filming. He was easily as big as Chris was in STM and SII. They just have different body shapes.

Yep, they both gained the same amout of muscle. And Routh is shorter than Reeve was.

Yeah, it wasn't to give him added size, it was to replace the definition that the bodysuit seemed to constrict & hide.
Oh & Routh never looked goofy like Bohmer does up there. ;D

Even with the padding, Bomer just looks ridiculous!

I don't think Bomer looks ridiculous in the suit. He does have a very decent look, iMO. His big problem is that he is too small. He reminds me more of Peter Parker. He just doesn't have the presence.

So, here we go again folks. A member makes a true statement about a personal experience that Russ did not share, & Russ proceeds to call them a liar.

The shoulder padding in the SR outfit never looked realistic but if there was additional padding elsewhere in the suit, it was never obvious to me. While Routh had good muscle definition, his physique was a little too lean for my taste. And it's irrelevant to constantly compare Routh's build to Reeve's because society's definition of a muscular physique has changed since Reeve was in the suit. Take a look at the sports figures today compared to even 15 years ago and there is a big difference so I can't fault people who think today's Superman should have been bigger. Not to mention the way Supes is depicted in comics today compared to the 70s and 80s. I do think Routh is sporting much more of a Superman-esque physique today. He looks a good 15 or 20 pounds heavier than the 215 pounds he was reported to be at during SR and I'm not sure why that is. He's not doing any action movies and is sticking to thrillers and romantic films. Maybe he's bulked up in case WB calls back for another Supes movie?
