Okay. So back to my question: Did the 40's look need to be in this film?

I'll unlock it after a few days.
Please don't carry this argument onto the Reboot thread.
Darrell, ask your 40s question in the Reboot thread, I guess.

I've been thinking. Wasn't he portrayed a little too broadly? I was just thinking about how forced and awkward his intro seemed. "Mr. Clark! Uhhhhh...."
Or maybe I need to see it again. I haven't seen SR in a while. Or is it because I'm watching STM and I'm comparing him to Marc McClure? I dunno.

It kinda was a shitty line for him to start with, otherwise he was alright. Chuckled at the point where he tried to pass of the coordinates as his idea. Nah, I think he was good.

Perfect Jimmy Olsen. That "Mr. Clark! Uhhh..." part is pretty weak but eh...the rest of what Huntington did was great.

The best big screen Jimmy ever. Rivals Jack Larson.

Actually, yeah, I'm watching bits of SR right now and he was good. I guess he just had a REALLY awkward intro.
I prefer McClure because I think McClure seemed a bit more natural in the role, whereas I think Huntington had some rather broad moments.

Huntington is probably my favorite Jimmy. I always liked Michael Landes as well (L&C's first Jimmy). Jack Larson and the George Reeves series was before my time.

Huntington was fantastic! He added even more than who was originally cast- Shawn Ashmore (who would have been fine as Jimmy, but Huntington adds even more flair to what could have been a limited role).

Are you sure Ashmore was cast in SR and that wasn't just a rumor coming from his X-Men connection with Singer? The only cast replacement I'm aware of is Hugh Laurie as Perry White.
It's for the best Huntington got the job in the end. In addition to him doing a great job, Ashmore was already in Smallville twice, and having another ex-X-Men in the cast would have been even more of a distraction. Not to mention his twin brother would go on to play Jimmy on Smallville, though I have a feeling if Shawn had been in SR, Aaron would not have been in SV.

I'm not 1000% sure- but I remember two sources on the net where it mentioned it was the case--- except that, because of the size of his role in it- Xmen 3 made Ashmore unavailable, and supposedly James Marsden was only able to be in X3 and SR because his role was so small.
In fact, I was a little suprised myself to see Cyclops cast in a Singer Superman movie- but that does demonstrate that Singer doesn't have a problem re-using actors from two different superhero franchises.
Anyhow, I thought Ashmore would have been fine as Jimmy, but Huntington more than filled Jimmy's shoes in other ways. (And it was interesting to see Ashmore's twin play Jimmy in Smallville to get a hint of what we might have gotten.)

I thought Sam Huntington did a very good job in SR, I really enjoyed his performance. I`d be disappointed to lose him if they go ahead with a reboot.
Although, after browsing the internet about this potential reboot I have seen a few people mention the kid for Superbad, Michael Cera, as the next Jimmy. I happen to think that is a good call!

Wasn't that another STM (Thau cut) reference?

Wasn't that another STM (Thau cut) reference? Right, in STM it was a humorous exchange, and in SR it was an awkward re-introduction. It's not necesarily a reference, but knowing Singer it probably is.

I'm in agreement with several others around here. The first line was awkwardly written and delivered (maybe that was the intent?). Anyways, though, I think Sam did fine with the small amount of screen time he had as Jimmy. I think in order to get a real guage of talent between several of the cast members (specifcally Routh and Huntington) Singer would've had to have focused on more dialogue exchanges and not drawn out some of the action and transition beats so much.

Maybe I'm being superficial, but seeing Sam shoving his face with a burrito = EPIC WIN. ;D

He's alright, but he's by far the geekiest Jimmy we've seen so far.
