Get Routh on board (unlikely as that may be), and I'm a happy camper.
Sorry to see you go Singer, but it wasn't your fault (well... let's not get into that).

Well, that's that. Absolutely official. That's what I've been waiting for. NOW I can get excited.
I wonder who the heck will direct? And who will they choose for the cast?
Criminy...this'll be pretty fun. A brand new Superman project, that has nothing to do with Donner. I wonder how this board will react to such a thing?
Is it me, or does Nolan seem more excited about Superman than Batman?

This is a great way to keep Nolan "in the fold" with him presumably leaving the Batman franchise after the next film. If he is indeed more excited about Superman it's because it's something new; he's free to establish new characters and tell a new story, and doesn't have the pressure of continuing the absurd success of TDK beyond one more Batman film.
He clearly has a passion for these characters, but this allows him to continue working with them (albeit a different set) and not run out of fresh, compelling material. His whole stance on Batman 3 was finding a story that "needed to be told." I think there's definitely enough Batman material for another film, especially with the place the character was left at the end of TDK (an outlaw). I'd even say there were two or three more stories worth telling such as Mr. Freeze or the return of Ra's Al Ghul, but I understand Nolan not wanting to push it.
I'm very excited to see where this goes, but like I've said since it became clear SR wasn't getting a sequel, heaven help whoever's cast as the new Superman for he will feel the full wrath and scrutiny of the Routh and Welling fans.

And following up TDK is no easy task. It's the third highest grossing film of all time, Ledger (who was such a key component of TDK and would have almost certainly returned for 3) is no longer with us, and the curse of the third superhero film looms large. If there's anyone who can pull it off though it's this creative team. Of course I said the same thing about Raimi and co. with Spider-Man 3...

Raimi and co. could have pulled off Spider-Man 3 if Avi Arad would have left well enough alone.
I think WB knows better than to interfere with Nolan and crew, especially after DK.

Nolan finishing Batman; Nolan starting Superman; Singer returning to X-men;
While it's not EXACTLY what I was hoping for; (Singer doing X-men 3 & 4 and SR/MOS-) (Nolan doing Batman 3 with Bale and Ledger)
I can't say that I'm totally unhappy with how it turned out.
Throw Routh back in as Superman, and I'll be fine.
And about Goyer coming with the idea: Goyer with a counterbalance is great- Goyer genuinely loves comics enough that it would be hard to see him do anything that wasn't respectful to the source material.
Still.... While the anticipation is exciting over what Goyer and Nolan will come up with--- there's a small part that still worries until the actual film comes out.
But- at least there's good faith that some of the best people will be in charge, from the get-go. Sweet enough.

Definitely agree about Goyer.
Goyer working with the Nolans in BB and TDK= greatness and B.O. gold.
Goyer writing Blade 1 and 2= not EPIC greatness but entertaining and a lot of fun.
Goyer writing and directing Blade 3= a serious step down from greatness, but Ryan Reynolds saved it. Though it's a serious split in either direction. Either people LOVED Ryan's humor in this, or they HATED it. Considering it was his humor that landed him Deadpool, I'll go with the former.
Either way I'm glad to hear about this just as much as everyone else. And even though I hated Returns, I'm more than willing to give Routh another try. If there's anything even hollywoods A-listers have shown me, is that sometimes it isn't the actor's talent, but how (and how well) they're directed. Motivation (wether or not they're phoning it in) is key as well. Routh has to WANT to give Superman another try. Let's face it, would Reeve have returned for part 2 if Superman the Movie really was a failure? Who knows.
Anyway, I of course hope this leads to WB giving Sel a shot at S2.

It seems that Nolan wants to direct a new Superman film. Interesting to note Jonah is "struggling" to match the epic nature of TDK. Good stuff.

Routh in or out, I am happy either way (I'd say its unlikely though)
Good to read all this.
SR was on BBC3 last night and I caught the last 20 mins or so. I forgot how dreary it all is; I really hope they lighten the tone a bit and have fun with the characters for the next one.
Right now, I am optimistic it'll be a great film.

Yeah Nolan may end up making Batman for Summer 2012 and then Superman for a Fall 2013 release

If Goyer directs my enthusiasm for the film will drop DEAD! He isn't a good director, he's proven that. I'd rather let Nolan's brother have a shot.

Yeah.
If Goyer gets the directing gig, my balls will ascend back into my body.
I say have Chris Nolan do Superman and let his brother and Goyer codirect Batman 3.

If it truly is going to be a period piece like I keep hearing (set in 30s-40s), I think Jon Hamm would be a good choice. He's got that old-school handsome. Maybe he's not big enough in stature, but he's a good template to start from. We need a 30-something Supes with a solid jaw. A Supes that gets slight wrinkles at the corner of his eyes when he smiles. A Supes that looks like his hair is slicked back with a combination of motor oil and brill cream. No more 20-something pretty boys!!!!

Perfect.
God, I'd LOOOOVE for it to be a period piece. Take from the book "It's Superman!" what they need, have an amazing realistic sci fi epic set in the 30's with John Hamm has Superman? Done. Do it. Do it now! I'm heaa!
I only know John Hamm from SNL and the the Luthor thing he did for Funny or Die, but I hear Mad Men is one of the best shows on TV, and he's the main dude, so it wouldn't make sense for him not to be amazing.
I'm all for it. Good idear.

I wonder if I'd be pissed about going in a new direction with Superman. Well, with Nolan pulling the strings, I can safely say no.
Batman in 2012 and Superman in the near future. Yes, that'll do.
I love Batman '89. Batman Begins did not cause me to hate the original or to hate the new one because it didn't use the music/style/actors of the 1989 movie. Here's to hoping lightning strikes twice.

Exactly.
Just 'cuz there's a new Superman doesn't make the old ones obsolete.

Perfectly said Rob.
Reeve totally got away with his age, but no one else did. Routh would have been better had he done it now rather than 4 years ago.
Set in the 30s/40s is a totally brilliant idea. No mobile phones, security cameras, etc to hinder his identities.
I do want the classic theme though; not necessarily in the style of the original (i.e. the 70s...) but a different interpretation, like how the Bonds had many different music interpretations over the years.
That theme is just too perfect not to use ever again.
