About those flying dreams I get them all the time and I love it. A few running steps and am off into the sky, landings too. People look and point. It''s like being him.
I watch and talk about Superman way too much haha!!!
Damn! Were in for a treat this summer folks!

Well, SR is divisive-
I'm sad that it is perceived that way, as I think the film is a cut above the majority of superhero films, but it's not a crowdpleaser for sure... the characters are too introspective for that-
But one thing we probably can agree on: that SR will probably be the one Superman film that splits and angers fans far more than any other Superman film.
SIII is an unfunny comedy; SIV had no budget; SR's crime is that it was a melancholy film about alienation, but in a superhero film's setting- Definitely didn't take the easy way out, and it's loved/despised for it.
What I'll always wonder is: if Singer blended in a Kryptonian villain(s) into SR and we had generous portions of action- would it have made SR palatable for the fans who didn't like the film as is?

I don't think anyone hates or despises SR. I think folks will want to seek and check it out in the future but probably one viewing will satisfy most of them.
Will be interesting to see how the future will see it. It's certainly not "prequel" territory.

Not so fast.
Each prequel had a better bad guy than SR. Each prequel had a more exciting climax than SR. Each prequel had better acting: Both SR and the prequels had shitty acting, but Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee, Ray Park, Ian McDiarmid Liam Neeson, and Ray Park werenall more memorable in the prequels than ANYONE in SR.
The prequels are flawed, but more exciting than SR at the end of the day.

I don't mean personal opinions but how they are generally perceived/remembered.

The prequels aren't remembered well, but since you bring up the comparison, I don't think SR holds up as well as you think.

The prequels and SR and KOTCS are all the same thing to me. I can't really differentiate between them.

A few quotes from Empire's revisit of SR...
Singer essentially made a domestic drama, a love triangle that just happens to have the worlds greatest superhero as its focus.
Because SR's real antagonist is forbidden love... the real villain is Lois, for her ongoing lie about her son's patronage.
In 2009, Quentin Tarantino told The New York Times how much he admired Singer's work on the film, that he was writing an epic review of it, already 20 pages long.
Singer's Superman is stuck, lost in time, and its deeply affecting... SR's maturity and serenity should be cherished. It is the worlds greatest superhero weepy. It's unlikely we'll see its kind again. And that makes it all the more special.
Alex Godfrey, Empire Magazine.

We won't see anything like it again? Thank fuck for that. Anyway, Zimmer's deluxe Man of Steel score from Amazon. I'll be ordering that

I would cherish the maturity and serenity if the film wasn't so boring and anti-climatic.
I am going to revisit this one day, when really in the mood for it, and see how it goes.
Probably best before the new film though

C'mon guys, the 1990 Captain America movie? Please. There's no comparison.
SR is a fine movie, it just missed the mark a little and failed to re-launch the franchise. Captain America (1990) is poorly made, poorly acted, with one of the worst "scores" I've ever heard. Same with the Crow sequels, which are universally unwatchable.

It's not a terrible film by any means. But for a long film it only has one or two really good moments, the rest is just dull, boring and often rehashed stuff from the Donner film.
I can fully understand why it wouldn't have gotten any new Superman fans on board.

SR needed a more serious villain, and the Finding Krypton sequence--which was the foundation of the whole movie--should have NEVER been cut. The fact that the movie opens with Lex sexing up some old bitty? Unforgivable. Was it really more important to spend all that time showing how Lex got his yacht over showing why Superman was so damn depressed? (TV on in background of Daily Planet: "BIllion Dollar Yacht STOLEN!" Cut to--Lex in captain's hat on Yacht. Done.)
If that was the route they wanted to take for his return, fine--but his "issues" should have been resolved by the end of the film, and it should have been a return to the smiling Superman we all know and love. We should have left that theater cheering in our minds "SUPERMAN is BACK!"
But, what we got instead was a Superman coming to grips with being a father, which pushed many fans, including myself, over the edge on this.

In fact, I wish the whole movie had been about his trip to Krypton. Maybe even discovering some villain surviving there, and having to fight him without super powers. There was so much interesting stuff that could have been explored, rather than a rehash of STM.

Well- looks like the floodgates have opened again on SR... ;D
I'm glad that, once the 'rage' is cleared on SR- the good stuff is pointed out (for the most part).
I still have a hunch if they had introduced Kryptonian(s) into SR (without changing the story all that much)- it would have had enough elements to satisfy everyone.
Pity that Singer waited for a sequel that ended up never happening.

I definitely don't see it being a cult classic, or any kind of classic.
Re-hashed real estate Luthor motive. Little action. Dull and depressing, poorly acted a lot of the time.
It's not a bad film all in all, but it's a poor Superman film, I'm not sure I could watch it from start to finish again.
One thing I will say, in hindsight and with what it looks like we will be getting with MOS, i'm glad SR wasn't a big success or we might not have gotten what we will be getting now. A whole new take on the character.

I watched SR the other day (my son is going nuts for anything Superman at the moment cause of MOS).
My complaints still stand. However I found Brandon's goofball Clark to be very unnatural and a little cringeworthy at times. Maybe not his fault though cause the script didn't give him much to do...but it's just something that seemed to stand out more during this viewing.

My first thoughts on Routh after seeing the film for the first time were that he was fantastic. Only after getting the dvd and watching select scenes did certain imperfections jump out at me. He was good, but not great. In saying that I came out of SR liking it but I think it was the adrenaline and getting to see a Superman film on the big screen for the first time ;D

Looking back now.
Does anyone else think the first promo image released was about the worst one they could have used? ;D
I had a look back through the thread for when it was released, and even I bashed Cavill and the suit a bit. I still don't think it even looks like Cavill!! Seriously. It's funny to read back because I loved everything i've seen since and at this point I wouldn't swap Cavill for ANYONE. A lot of people had issue with the cape, but I agree with what Val and Rob said at the time, it has a nice regal look, infact Cavill himself seems very regal which I like.
There are some hilarious comments further back in this thread too, proper laughing my ass off reading them back. ATP saying he heard Snyder got the gig when they read "He is highly regarded as a director" and wondering if there was maybe a small typo in that report ;D
I hadn't realized how ridiculous Gazer's bitterness was either until reading it back! Cavill was too short, too sinister, too dark, 'Bradon' embodied Superman. Amy Adams didn't look like Lois, Kate Bosworth was much more Lois than Adams. That was definitely a case of just bashing anything because Routh wasn't brought back!
