I watched it today for the first time in years. YEARS. I can't even remember the last time I did so. I think it might've been on tape, maybe. Yipes.
Anyhow. Loved it. Loved it ALL. Every minute of it. It's what I grew up with, I didn't know a different version existed until I was 13 and saw it on USA. I prefered the long cut to the theatrical for a while but then began to appreciate the theatrical more, especially when the DVD came out.
But now that I watched the three hour cut again...yeah...I think it's my favorite version. I love the exposition. It's all very well edited, too, I like the differences in some scenes. The music playing thru Krypton quake and explosion. Etc. I know a lot of people don't care for the Otis stuff, but for some reason, I did. I got a kick out of it.
The copy I downloaded was AWFUL, though, just shitty. I wish Warner Brothers would release an official three hour cut, if not longer. It'll never happen but man, that'd be all kinds of awesome.

I always LOL at Lex beating up Otis in the ambulance with the marshmellows flying everywhere.
Haven't seen the cut all the way through myself for about 8 years now. Maybe give it a go soon.
Think the theatrical is a superior cut; as a matter of fact I appreciated the editing even more after watching the 3 hr cut.

I 've had it on tape for a while but haven't watched it in at least a year. I'm waiting for the restored version that the guys on the other message board are making to be be released. They said it should be done by the end of March. Seems like a while, but the anticipation and build up will be worth it.

I tried watching the KCOP cut about 2 years ago. Laughably bad. Couldn't get through it. They show so much footage of Brad & the gang driving around, that it doesn't make sense when he asks Clark : "How's you get here so fast?" ;D ;D ;D As long as they spent getting there, it was around enough time for Clark to walk home at a normal pace anyway! I cant fathom why people still clamor for a cut with all that footage that weighs the film down & makes little sense. But, in the age of fan cuts....to each his own.

The KCOP cut shows just how much STM has Stuart Baird to thank for making it good.

Exactly right Jim. Plus cutting out some of Brando's stuff for the good of the overall product is fucking amazing work.
Haha, I forgot about the Smallville crap. Everything that was cut from Smallville was easily justified; when you watch the film, the whole sequence is beautifully edited and comes across as a series of endings.
Why in God's name Thau ruined it with the fucking parrot is beyond me. Did he do it for a joke? Completely fucked up the flow of it all and even worse, that beautiful music suffers and the mood is lost.
What a douche.

In one of earlier drafts of my S2 fan cut, I used a few flying shots from the KCOP cut. I understand where you're all coming from when you say how it's good that these added scenes were cut, but at the same time, an official dvd release of the KCOP could certainly help in the world of fan edits. Those flying shots could be put to some good use.

Oh no, the Hollywood sign is slowly descending nearby some girl scouts. OOOOOOOH, DANGER! That's what I call raising the stakes! fair enough. anyone ever watch the doc from lethal weapon 4 ? "pure lethal" - its a great little doc and danny glover explains that donner always over-shoots scenes so that he and the editors have plenty of latitude when cutting. donner himself would not have approved of the 3 hour cut it was never supposed to be like that. maverick mentions the smallville " how'd you get here.." scene. perfect example- all of the coverage was there so he and baird could have options. when the salkinds sold the tv rights they padded it with any scrap of footage they could find. obviously we all know this. but i think fans love the 3 hour cut because it IS an indulgence. it IS a lot of extra stuff and we just have a sense of sentiment that we like to spend more time with a dear friend. we are nerds. besides if we didnt have the 3 hour tv cut we'd hardly know about a lot of the extra footage that IS good stuff.

I have not watched it in years (I no longer own a VCR). It's a shame that when it appeared on TV it was in P&S, in mono and from a 16mm master. The 16mm print appears on ebay from time to time.

I agree with Indo on the P&S; I watched bits of it the other day but couldn't get past the poor quality. Should have included all the footage in a deleted scenes section on the huge DVD set somewhere.

In the 3 hour cut, lets not forget about soul jive afro brother number one, who keeps popping up in all the subway shots, even when he's already passed the place that he's shown walking by ;D ;D ;D ;D

Speaking of extras, I noticed the middle aged woman in the pink dress/black hair who pops up everywhere in STM was an extra in Arthur - both in the NYC locations.

I watch this every couple of years, usually for a special occasion, or if I'm sick. I like to keep it on as background noise while I read Bronze Age Superman comics. Wish my copy wasn't so crap!
But yeah, I see why every single edit was made. Nonetheless, it's like comfort food. I wanna hear more of those voices, more of that music, see more of those locations. Glad I can still see it when I want!

You know...
If Donner hadn't spent so much time shooting unused footage, then maybe he wouldn't have been so overschedule and overbudget. Maybe he could have had enough time and money to finish Superman II. All that extraneous and pointless stuff you see in the KCOP cut is a precursor to Donner's firing, IMO.
Hitchcock never shot anything he didn't plan to use. He did that to prevent extended cuts and sequels using his footage (both things the Salkinds later did).

If the 2006 cut is indicative of what would have happened, then I for one am glad Lester did 2.

Larry Lamb (Archie from EastEnders) is credited as 1st reporter in STM. I can't spot him. He was in Superman III playing one of the mine workers who speaks to Gus.

To be fair, Dick didn't get much planning time. Hitchcock meticulously planned, first with the writer, then drew the storyboards over 12 months.

Isn't most of the excess stuff second unit footage? There's a lot of snippets that I actually think are great- (i.e. Supes sticking around for a second and looking intense after seeing that the man at the powerplant is ok- then flying right off) - but the stuff that feels really excessive doesn't look like it was shot by the main unit necessarily.
