I don't know what anyone was thinking shooting scenes at the Indian reservation, or whatever that was.

The content was all in the STM shooting script, including the reservation. (Though, yeah, that should have definitely have been a script edit. Superman uses the dam collapse to help those on the reservation? I guess if there's some social commentary, I'm not opposed, but conceptually, it's a little odd....)

Watched it for the first time the other morning and I really got a kick from it.
Things I enjoyed the most were:
The different line readings, angles that was really good during the trail.
Brando placing the blanket/colors in the ship.
Glen Ford's extra dialogue and the shot of the kid lifting the car.
-kinda liked Lana's lines in the Smallville scenes, but can see why they went and appreciated Bairds' edit.
When Clark gets up and walks to the window when the crystal ''calls'' to him.
After the fortress is built I loved everything that followed, his entrance into the fortress and Brando's scenes/extra lines.-Thau,you should have left that in!!!
Liked the shots of Metropolis (which Lester later used in the opening titles of II)-Wish this was dvd quality I'd like to use this in my cut of S2.
-interesting use of different angles and close up shots in the DP when we are introduced to Clark and Lois. Same for the balcony interview and Lex's confrontation with Superman later on.
Liked the scene as Clark and Lois get into the taxi cab and as the car drives off,Otis walks up the side-walk.-I really liked that.
Loved,I mean really laughed at the many appearances of ''soul jive afro brother'' ;D -was this intentional or what? cos if it was it got a rise out of me,he is brilliant!-
The longer scene in the helicopter after the pilot passes out,Lois' reactions and perturbation is excellent. I was really quite gripped by this.
All the shots of Superman flying SHOULD have been left in,Thau FFS! why didn't you add these scenes?
All the stuff from mission control and the reservation-glad this was edited out.
Can see why the scene of Jimmy and the guy (who always gets the Chief's coffee) was cut,but I love the cinematography of anything in the DP. Again at the end Jimmy taking pictures of Lois,I enjoyed a lot but can see why they went out upon release.
I liked all the mayhem and panic the earth quake caused, the houses and stuff on the golden gate, bike crashing etc.-Would have opted for this rather than the Hollywood sign falling-again,Thau-take note!
Liked Superman trying to stop the missile and it goes straight past him.
When he saves Jimmy from the damn burst and allowing Jimmy to get a few shots.
Also, after superman turns the power off at the plant and the shot of him flying up.
All in all, a really enjoyable watch. As a massive fan I'm glad that I now have a copy, another one for the collection.

I re-watched the clip of Superman floating in the path of the missile with his arms up, preparing to stop it in it's tracks, only to watch the missile turn and fly right passed him. Now, granted I could tell the timing was off even the first time I saw it (Superman turns his head about a half second too soon), but regardless, it's little moments like this that make me wish all these clips were on dvd. Even if they're in the deleted scenes section. Get them in widescreen format so we fan cutters can make good use of these shots for S2.
I swear, if I had the time, patience, and skill I would rotoscope EVERY unused flying shot from the KCOP of S1, as well as S3 and put them to good use in my S2 fan cut. heck, I'd even use shots of Reeve from "Somewhere in Time". I caught it on cable yesterday and at the end there's a scene where he's walking rather mournfully with his hands in his pockets. DEFINITELY could've used that for the "Clark walks back to the fortress" scene.

Yea,there was some great shots that would fill in the spaces for cutting S2 together. Loved ALL the flying scenes, just excellent. They make me appreciate Chris Reeve all the more.
That establishing shot of Metropolis I mentioned previously would go (right up until the 'inside cab' scene) before DP opening/jump.

I hear you, Tyler. In theory, would love to take every single shot of the villains as well and reuse them... but... Rotoscoping is...ough...painful beyond belief. You can work 8 hours on a shot that will last maybe two seconds, and not get it quite right. I'll be the first to admit that my rotoscoping on my cut is VERY uneven.
Add to that- the rather blurry quality of the RIC--- (At times I scratch my head why WB would be upset at any RIC out there---- we'd ALL buy a dvd-level quality of the extended versions anyday! But if WB doesn't release it....*sigh*).
Hoping that with the new movie, that WB releases all kinds of new Reeve STM/ SII stuff.... will see....

Well put,cam I agree.
Zod and Ursa's reactions to Jor-El's evidence is excellent, would go nice into a fan cut.
All that beautiful footage is laying to waste in some vault. I would pay top dollar for the cut on dvd. As you say,see what happens and how they decide to promote the new Superman picture.

I loved Brando extra dialogue before "So my son, speak!" - the cut was jarring in the theatrical. I am not sure why Baird cut it. Same goes for trying to catch the missile
Thau put Ma Kent calling to young CK in, but left those out - a giant WTF???

Totally agree, ye5man. The Brando dialogue is essential to these two films. Anticipation of questions etc... I think Lester sneaked in while Thau was having a cigarette break and added The Ma Kent and Hollywood scenes. By the time Thau got back it was too late. I did laugh however during the plantation scene when you can see a black dog chasing a chicken lol ;D

HATE the Hollywood sign scenes. Supes standing in front of the missiles- perfect fx or not, should have stayed in..... that totally added to the intensity of Supes chasing it. (Amazing what 20 seconds can do to change a whole tone of a scene).
Showing a few more seconds of Ma Kent telling her bird to wake up I was ok with- showing that she was going to be alright a bit (and letting the poor actress have SOME screen time)- but for some reason, the giant closeup of "Cheerios" stuck right in our faces perfectly is getting on my nerves, even though that was in the theatrical from the getgo.....

The Hollywood sign scenes is really lame. It takes the viewer out of the movie. It seems a joke. I wouldnt mind to see some CGI in that gigantic box of Cheerios.

As pointed out in past posts, the only thing I miss about the KCOP edition is the restoration of all Williams's music dialed out from the theatrical edition. All the Krypton destruction music, the Super Feats stuff and the rest should be placed back into the film.

Donner is a great director, but it doesn't mean that I don't think he goes over the top at times. Another moment that makes little sense- is when the dam is just breaking- and, presumably EVERY second counts..... that Superman STOPS and tells Jimmy, "go ahead, take a picture".... evidence of excess also is most of "Lethal Weapon 4", which just starts to turn into bad sitcom territory. (Not to say that it's not an entertaining pic, but a work of art it's not).
Baird is a perfect editor for Donner. The best scenes from all of Donner's films over the years have had Baird's name attached to it. (And I believe vice-versa).

Just a thought..... wonder if the restoration is the same level as the SII RIC? In any case, the extra clip that Jim Bowers put up is amazing- "long arm" bit I had never seen before- fascinating! Pity there was never a three hour version of SII on the airwaves.....

Just been flicking through this. I really like young Clark's entrance to the fortress. He stands in the shadows at first,a bit unsure of his surroundings. Then he goes in,takes his time,up them steps and the excellent camera work as it lifts up,we see the crystal panel in the background.
love the following moments, the slight sound effects as Clark approaches the panel.
..beautifully shot,love it.

I spotted Larry Lamb, he is the reporter that is walking under the TV when the mission footage appears.
