You have to keep in mind the budget of the film, which was well above $200 mil by most estimates. Plus, the tens of millions spent marketing the film and any money owed to other financiers and business partners. It's very probable that $391 mil worldwide just wasn't enough for WB to recoup their investment plus have adequate profits left over.

I'm not losing interest at all. Maybe it's because I don't live solely for the Christopher Reeve movies. To me, Superman is bigger than that one actor.
My humble opinion is that folks are only losing interest because there's no news on the new movie to bitch about.
Otherwise, what more could you want? In the past 30 years, we've been given five theatrical releases, two television shows (Lois & Clark, Smallville), a few dozen cartoon series/direct-to-videoes (TAS, All-Star, Doomsday, Public Enemies), a constant stream of comics, action figures (STM figures of Zod, Superman, Luthor), novels (Last Days of Krypton, Enemies & Allies), DVD releases of classic live-action and cartoon series like Ruby Spears or George Reeves.
Of course, I have to pace myself because of money, but there's always something new for me to discover.

The Donner/Reeve movies' interpretation was what rejuvenated & increased my own personal interest in the Superman character. The Singer/Routh embracing & wanting to continue that version got me hyped even more-
But when the waiting, waiting, waiting for a non-sequel happened, and not having someone that everyone feels 1000% about in the drivers' seat in charge of the 'new' direction for Superman leaves me, at least, a bit mixed on the whole thing at this point.
If fans heard that Donner was going to direct and/or exec-produce this, and try to outdo himself, or that even George Lucas was going to make this his new 'Star Wars trilogy', (despite his loss of directing skills, his producing skills are fantastic)-
I think a good chunk might be ambivalent about it- because half of it- even if done well - feels like it'll be a retelling of the same origin material and may or may not be rebooted again once it's told! (blah)

It's going to be awesome when it finally appears, and like with most blu-ray releases, I hope it delivers the goods on what it promises to add/improve which makes it so special. STM theatrical with 1978 audio/SII theatrical/SR Extended in blu-ray - one of the most exciting superman releases in a long, long time.

I'm just glad WB retained all the bonus content from the 14-DVD set. Lots of studios refuse to port over the bonus materials from DVDs to blu-rays, for some reason. A crappy practice that's preventing many consumers, including myself, from getting rid of the DVD versions even after upgrading to the blu-ray copies.
Not that I plan on selling my 14-DVD Superman set even after buying the blu-ray set. That Ultimate Collector's Edition is just too cool to ditch regardless of how many upgraded formats come down the road.

The best parts of the "Year of Superman" were Casino Royale and Rocky Balboa.

At the time, it was SR and the knowledge that the Richard Donner cut was actually going to be completed! The idea of bridging Donner's Superman to a new generation was exciting.... but it's a bummer that it didn't work out. (and it's arguable as to why)
