SUPERMAN:BEYOND (one shot)
i was very keen to read this one. with superhero comics the only "constant" is revisionism; buuuuuuuut.... this is quite likely to be the LAST glimpse of the timm-verse.
if you're a fan of the timm-verse ( if you aren't i don;t want to know you) then you'll probably recall that batman beyond was a surprise in that it was better than it deserved to be given the corporate douche bag mandates that were foisted on bruce timm. batman is not a "teen hero". he is not "futuristic". he is not "anime". but then batman beyond ended up being really really cool.
and, as a superman disciple, i thought the superman ep's were excellent. this one-shot takes place a couple years after those ep's.
i wish i could tell you it was amazing, but it isn't. it isn't bad at all, and the depiction of superman is spot-on. it's just that the plot is pretty by-the-numbers.
story: B/B- art: B
with ron frenz drawing and sal buscema inking the art will inevitably look like 70's marvel. i can sort of see the logic of that, with buscema associated with "THOR" and "silver surfer" - it makes sense to use that "look" for a superman space fantasy, but this particular story is in the batman beyond premise and so i think it was a bit off. not bad at all, but just not quite as amazing as i'd hoped.
worth reading though, if you'd like one last little peak at the timm-verse- easily one the best iterations of DCU ever.

JLI Vol. 1
The original work by Giffen and crew. I always wanted to read this when I was younger, I never got a chance to. Never really searched it out, either. I'm almost glad I didn't. Discovering this gem for the first time was fucking AWESOME. I think I might've enjoyed this one the most out of all I've read so far. I feel greatly behind with that Week of Geek shit, I watched too much Batman animated series, but eh...I have a lot of comics to be read. It's a wonderful feeling. Anyhow, I loved Batman in this. And Blue Beetle. I love all of it, really. Literally laughed out loud numerous times. I can't wait to read Volume 2.
Planetary
Oh, boy, I really liked this one a lot. I don't know why I chose it, just kinda random, I like the writer a good amount, I suppose, but DAMN. This was awesome. I'm definitely gonna get the rest of these. It's not too long, right? I think? Fantastic subject matter. Very fun. I love this kind of stuff.
I'm reading Powers right now and love it so far.

Just finished re-reading Batman: Long Halloween and the follow up Dark Victory. Absolutely brilliant. Top of my favorite batman stories without a question. Batman against the mob works so brilliantly. That's where batman works best IMO. i always thought that it would have made an excellent set of films, shot back-to-back and and released a year apart on Halloween.

i've almost completed my geoff johns superman run. and i did it the old fashioned way, tracking down individual issues as opposed to trades! (i'm silly like that) ;D
i haven't read it all, but what i have read (last son, ending battle, brainiac) was excellent. i do think johns may end up being one of the definitive versions of superman.
so up next: superman: legion of superheroes.

That Legion arc is actually my favorite of his. Even more than Brainiac (which I LOOOOVE)

Batman: Gates of Gotham (5 issue run)
Fantastic story with told with great poise by Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins. Really nice art from Trevor McCarthy (though issue 4 was by Dustin Nguyen).
Loved every page.

SANDMAN VOL. 1
Ohhh, holy fucking shit.
This is one of those things where I'm angry at myself for never having experienced before, but at the same time overjoyed because I just discovered it for the first time.
Jesus.
I want all of them. Immediately. Sold. This was fucking fantastic. Loved it. One of the best things I've read in a while. Goddamn.
Enthralling. From the first page to the last. The diner issue, FUCK. The Death issue, FUCK. Just simply incredible.
Thanks for the recommendation, fellas. I owe you one.

Loved every page. That's the one where he's in 19th century or something, right? If so, that's a wild concept...I definitely have to check that out.

Oh, definitely.
I hate having conversations with people who know nothing about comic books.
"No...it's not...it's not like that. It's actually really good stuff. Like REALLY good stuff. Yes. Really. No, I'm serious. Modern day mythology. Alright...yeah...where are you going? You brought it up. Don't walk away from me."

No, it's set in modern day (well, before the reboot!) with Dick as Batman. It delves into the history of Gotham and it's ruling families - how they shaped the city and the consequences of that. btw, Kyle Higgins the co-writer is a big STM fan and worked with Donner in the past.

Ah right, I'm sorry. The title got me confused. The one I was talking about is called Gotham by Gaslight. Well I got two things to check out now.

Sandman rewards repeated reads. You can get SUPER nerdy with it and start checking out all of the music and literature that Gaiman references. It's enormously rewarding.

I can't wait to get the second volume and beyond.
STARMAN Vol. 1
This was great! I love the reluctant hero approach. Dialogue is top notch. I liked this one quite a bit.
SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING Vol. 1
No clue that Swamp Thing would be like this, but damn, that was great. Very fun. Pink Floyd and a lot of weed behind the reading of this helped make it great late night reading. I look forward to the next one.
V FOR VENDETTA
Movie's great, but has absolutely nothing on the book. Wow! Loved it. Alan Moore, after reading this, is officially my favorite comic book author. Just amazing stuff.
WEAPON X
Man, this one took a while to get going, I didn't care for the artwork or the colors at first but eventually both got better, as did the story and the dialogue, which was rough at first. Rough start, breezes through at the end. Pretty damn good. Not as good as I remember but still good.

read swamp thing vol 2 recently and its better than the first. it keeps the general fucked-uppededness in tact but the plotting is much more fluid. dying to check out starman sometime.

JLA: Year One
For some reason, this one took a REALLY long time for me to get into, but once I did, it was a heck of a lot of fun. Great interplay between the characters. Love The Flash in it. Love how much of a dick GL is in it. Really good time.
JLA: League of One
I feel like I've read this or seen this in animated form before, but regardless, this is awesome. Wonder Woman kicks some ass in it. The artwork is BEAUTIFUL. And I love how the other members of the JLA are in it and very accurately so. I liked this one quite a bit.

Michael Uslan's The Boy Who Loved Batman. As much about the evolution of all comics as it is about Batman. A great read.

Superman : RED SON gotta tell ya, really liked it. i avoided it for years, and yes i was being an ideologue, but even though i knew it was elseworlds the very idea of overtly communist superman was so off-putting i just had NO desire at all to read it. i was pretty sure (a little maybe) that it wouldn't be a pro-commie tract, but i had zero desire to support anything that even "softened" the concept. i mean, the communist symbol where the "S" should be? but hey, i got it- mint condition- for a BUCK! ;D so, i read it and was pleased. i liked the design of his suit, i really liked the role brainiac (super powers style!) and the plot was cool. the ending, or the resolution with luthor, brainiac and superman was actually pretty good and decent way to depict superman. it made sense, in that context, if kal-el landed in soviet russia, that superman would be that way. however, the epilog, with the paradox was a bit too much. a little sugary and felt too "neat". i am reminded of "last temptation of christ" (NOT favorably comparing the writer! ;D ) where christians lost their minds at the idea of jesus having a wife and kids- but then in context one would realize that the author was NOT asserting that was actually what had happened, only that it would be a temptation so calm the fuck down. (of course, making the analogy is probably sacrilegious in of itself ) anyway, i give it a solid B. might even get the action figure.

Animal Man (Morrison's run)
Borrowed these from Val. Only read volume one. Loved it. LOVED it. So much fun. So creative. I don't know why it took me so long to get into Animal Man. He's awesome. Very human, very normal, I like. A lot.
Astro City
I knew absolutely jackshit about this book before getting it from a friend of mine. I hadn't heard anything about it. Folks, this is as classic as a superhero book can get. It's great. It's just good old fashioned costumed hero stuff. The people they save, the city they're in, Busiek and Alex Ross came up with 75 years of history for Astro City. It's really quite something. Good fun. Ends pretty interestingly, I look forward to seeing where it goes.
Ex Machina: Tag
This is book two. I'm pretty sure this is one of the greatest goddamn comics I've ever read. I want to read all of it. Is there a lot? My GOD, it's incredible. The social issues they deal with, YEARS ahead of time, it's really quite something. The art is too good. The dialogue is WAY too good. This book is fucking incredible. I wholeheartedly love it.

Fables Vol. 1
This is another book I'd never heard of. A buddy of mine has a friend who works at DC and gets a SHIT ton of books for free had a huge stack that he gave me, this and Astro City and others were in it.
Fables is great! I love the concept. The art is really damn good, too, as is the dialogue and the plot. Very fun read. What if fairy tales were real and lived amongst us? This book is about that, and dealing with keeping their reality a secret from ours. Very cool.

Fables got old for me real quick, but the rest of the universe loves it, so I think it's just my problem.
Ex Machina, well...you could pretty much just take it word for word, panel for panel, and turn it into an HBO series. That's how good the writing is. Probably the best dialogued comic in history.

I'm pretty sure I got volume 2 of Fables. We will see how it goes.
Ex Machina is my favorite comic of all time already, I've decided. I've never turned the page faster. Well, maybe the old Death and Return but that's a different beast.

There's a final volume? It's not still going? Wonderful!
Incorruptible Vol. 1
Directly related to Irredeemable.
FANTASTIC. Took a little bit to get going but I love what they're doing with this. Waid rules. When he's on, he's ON. I think I like Irredeemable a bit more, but this is still great. The world's most feared super villain turns good when the world's most loved super hero turns bad. Like I said. FANTASTIC.
Planetary Vol. 2
I enjoyed 1 more, this one kinda convolutes a little, and it's slightly hard to follow, although I WAS stone cold sober, so that could've made it worse. I know. Weird. But yeah. I liked it. Looking forward to finishing it but I feel it'd be a better read to do the entire thing all the way through rather than a volume here and there.

Well.. Finally I got ALL STAR Superman Vol 1 and 2. It was a toss up between that and Superman: Secret Origin Hardcover (Which I'll probably get sometime next month.)
This will be my first TPB that I've ever had, and the first full on comic that I've read probably since the 90's when I stopped collecting comics.
I'm excited.. I miss the reading comics, it's really transporting me back to my childhood and feeling like a giddy kid waiting for the next issue. lol... I've read the first 3 issues in Vol 1 so far. It's good.. the art is beautiful.
