I have off from work at the end of the month, and was going to go home to Florida, but decided I'd rather just stay here and relax and hang out. Basically, do NOTHING. Nothing but nerdy shit, of course. I intend to watch Batman: The Animated Series (seasons 3 and 4), all of Superman: The Animated Series, and the first two seasons of Justice League on bluray. When I'm not watching those, I will be reading from a soon to arrive massive purchase from Amazon (I got a giftcard from Chase. Yaaay) the following:
All Star Superman - I read a few when they came out but wanted to wait for them all to come out. LOVED the animated movie. I hear this is one of the best Superman stories ever. Can't wait.
Astonishing X-Men: Gifted - Haven't read an X book in years. I hear great things about this one.
Wolverine: Weapon X - I read a bunch of these when I was a kid, never saw the rest of them. Can't wait to get this, honestly. It'll really take me back.
Green Lantern: No Fear - Read this years ago, don't remember much.
Invincible: Eight Is Enough - Second volume in a very fun series!
Saga Of The Swamp Thing - This better be fucking good, you assholes. Is Locklear in it?
Starman: Sins Of The Father - Again, going off you guys here.
Planetary: All Over The World - I love Warren Ellis. Taking a chance here.
Sandman: Preludes And Nocturnes - Once more, you guys.
Captain America: Red Menace - I fucking LOVED the first volume. I'm sure this'll be just as good. Can't wait to read this one.
Justice League International Vol. 1 - I've ALWAYS wanted to read this.
Daredevil: Born Again - Again, always wanted to read this one, too.
The Flash: Dastardly Death of the Rogues - Hopefully it's a good Flash book! Art looks beautiful.
V For Vendetta - I'm ashamed to say I've never read this. Can't wait.
Clearly, that week is going to fucking RULE.

All Star Superman
Greatest Superman story in 15 years or more. One of the best I've ever read.
Astonishing X-Men: Gifted
The ENTIRE Joss Whedon Astonishing run is fabulous.
Wolverine: Weapon X
This the Barry Windsor-Smith thing? Haven't read it since I was a kid! His art is all class, though.
Green Lantern: No Fear
Is good! Better than Rebirth!
Invincible: Eight Is Enough
Only read volume 1 of this, but hear universally good things about the entire series.
Saga Of The Swamp Thing
Make sure you get right before you read this. This is the first of the truly epic, "adult" comic series. It was this, then Sandman. Shit pays off in a HUGE way in later volumes, too.

So good.

Great series. Nice and short, too.
Sandman: Preludes And Nocturnes
Volume 1 is weakest of series, so don't give up if you aren't totally floored right away. Then again, you might be. Feel free to get completely obsessed and look up all the literary shit and listen to tons of Cure...
Captain America: Red Menace
Each volume of Brubaker's Captain America gets better than the one before. You won't be disappointed.

A joy to read. I have 'em all in single issues. ALWAYS fun.

ok, you ready for this? Frank Miller never topped this. Ever. I hold it in even higher regard than Dark Knight Returns and Year One.

This is fun. Manapul's art is fantastic.

Of the list, I've read maybe 1/3rd of what you've got listed there. My own two cents: For extra fun- maybe watch the movie afterwards- with the right mindset that it'll be watered down, but still fun. * Daredevil: Born Again- One of Millers' best- but it really needed the buildup of the Elektra arc preceding this, I think for even more impact. I know it's not on the list, but Batman: Year One - I think is a perfect companion to this, with "Batman Begins" as great viewing afterwards to see its influence. * X-men: Gifted. Not bad. But not in the same league as the Miller stuff imo. View with the motion comic/ 'Xmen 3' afterwards- if curious how much was stolen from 'Gifted' (unfortunately not enough). * V for Vendetta: Interesting- particularly in the context that there was a giant gap between what Lloyd/Moore started with the series and how they finished it. Though, it'll drive you nuts on how visually close the movie is to the graphic novel & how they strayed enough from the story to really blow it (Sort of like how Watchmen was done). Anyhow, curious to read the follow up on your experience with the books in your post!  |

I started Ex Machina, by the way. Fucking fantastic right off the start.

I bought Ex Machina in single issues as it came out. Possibly the most gripping first issue I've ever read. That's a book that will totally rock you, and has HUGE payoffs. Not one disappointing moment in the whole damn thing.

Powers reads like an amazing cable tv series. Where it just builds tension and builds some more tension and then just when you think shit can't get any weirder, they kill a major character who you just started to like, and then builds tension in an entirely different direction.
It's a fucking masterpiece. It doesn't read like a comic. It reads like an HBO series. So does Ex Machina, and Tony Harris' hyper-real art makes that even LOOK like one.
Both of those books, you will hear every line of dialogue and every voice distinctly.

Just buy the trades. I managed to get like, the first 11 or 12 trades all at once from a friend who was moving out of the country. I blazed through 'em in like a week. Unbelievable!

Just ordered most of them. The next few weeks will be peppered with comic arrivals. It'll be glorious. All I need to get is Powers, Invincible, Flash, Cap, Sandman, V and GL. I think I get a $20 off deal at my comic shop for every $100 I spend, and I should be getting around that with two purchases.
I decided not to do the Justice League cartoons. It'll be a massive undertaking as it is to watch the Batman and Superman animated series. But GOD, it'll rule. An eight day nerd bender.

Damn. That WOULD be quite an undertaking. I'm starting to realize that I may be in over my head, too, with the reading and the watching of the cartoons. I probably won't be able to do everything. I may just stick with the ten I ordered now and pick a couple up during my week off if need be.
I'm gonna get a massive Walking Dead omnibus thing from Val, so that'll become my nighttime reading. Perfect before bed. Horrific drawings of zombies and gore.

I'm on a comic bender myself. I intend to read the entire Secret Six series, the entire Incredible Hercules, and some odds and ends from the Superman triangle years (including Death And Return).
I expect to do all of this before Labor Day weekend. I'm also watching the complete Brisco County Jr, and Season One of Lois And Clark.
I expect to come home and find my girlfriend's bags packed any day now...

;D val, you crack me up! it takes just the riiiiight girl to roll with this shit. it's a fine line. mrs jor knew when she bought-in i was uber-nerd. anyhoo- i was motivated by you two to start getting my books in order and was surprised to RE-disover i had the first few issues or "POWERS" - picked em up at a comic-con in columbus and even had the author sign em!  also found a tpb of "100 bullets" ! damn. i need to get this shit together. |

They should start arriving tomorrow. Gads, I'm so excited. Went to the shop today to see which ones they have that I want beyond what I've already ordered. I think I'm just gonna buy the whole first year of Powers. That big volume. Might as well.

If I may make a small suggestion...
For the good of the industry, if you have a local comic shop, buy from them. Fuck Amazon except in cases of "can't find it anywhere else" or it's some ridiculous 50% discount.
Comic shops, all of them, even the giants in NYC like Jim Hanley's Universe and Midtown Comics are hurtin'. Think of them like record stores or old movie theaters. If people like us don't support 'em, nobody will, and soon they'll just be a memory.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against Amazon. It's cheap and super-convenient. But, check the local shops first!
