Now that the book is out, it deserves its own thread.
Don't get me wrong. I liked it. But...
As the much hoopla-d entry point to the new DCU, it fails. Miserably. If I was a brand new customer spending FOUR BUCKS on that, I'd feel pretty ripped off. It doesn't feel like the first episode of a good TV series, it feels like a fifth of an episode. That's a TV show up to the first commercial break. If, say, a 12 year old girl bought that...where the heck is Wonder Woman? That should have been a triple sized issue for 4 or 5 bucks to at least give a new reader something to chew on. Instead it's something for guys like us to be like, "Oh, cool....I can't wait to see how Jim Lee draws Darkseid" or whatever.
And THAT is the problem with comics right now, not just this one. For three or four bucks, nevermind not getting a complete story, you get almost nothing. If I was a brand new reader, I'd feel pretty gypped.
20 or 30 bucks will get you a full season of a TV show. 15 bucks gets you a graphic novel, collected from 5 or 6 comics, that usually feels like ONE episode of a really good one hour drama. If DC isn't willing to address this, well...

i flipped through it, and yes- it looks like a glorified "preview". the thing is, BOTH BIG companies have spent the last few years taking material that OUGHT to be 3-4 issues and streeeeeeeetching it to 8-10. sure, big, 2-page splashes look great, but its a thin disguise that material isn't very substantive.

More like they take things that should be done in 1-2 issues and stretch 'em to six. That's the NORM!
Yet here I am, like a junkie...

JUSTICE LEAGUE : international.
i'm going to go ahead and lump this in with the main JL title.
picked up the first issue, and the lineup is the same (almost) as the late 80's JLI (the goofy justice league) so i can't wait. i am going to hold off though as it may have something to do with the "brightest day" era JLI:generation lost title- which featured maxwell lord and the JLI and how it all fit in after all the "crisis/lantern" stuff. my comic shop guy recommended JLI:generation lost as it might be cannon and a prologue to the new JLI. i almost picked up the whole series, but i'm still chasing geoff johns superman issues i missed and some other stuff i wanted to wrap before i moved on to other "back issue lists". ;D
anyone familiar with the "JLI:generation lost" ?

It was written by Judd Winnick, therefore it is almost certainly shit. He's a writer I avoid.

justice league #1
yep. a glorified preview. as i had mentioned in another thread, i get so tired of 2-page splashes instead of STORY! sure, for dynamic shots and BIG important scenes the the use of 2-page or full-page shots is ok, but jesus! it's like a damn crutch anymore!
not that the series won't be any good- but there was no "meat" to this issue at all- and thats a problem as it was the FIRST of the ''new 52" and the "core" title!
thin ice.
JL:international #1
certainly a nod to the late 80's justice league. not a whole lot to go on yet, but i really like the art! it reminds me of dan jurgens in his prime with art thibert inking.
the 80's "goofy" JL had a very similar lineup and a U.N. sanction as well. having batman in it makes NO sense other than seeing it as a soft satire with batman being the straight-man to the comedy antics of booster, blue beetle and guy gardner. no one minds the JL "sitcom" so long as the writing is REALLY good ( which it was the first time this lineup/premise was used)
i'm curious where jurgens takes this, and the art is very good.

I got JL No. 1. Meh. Liked Action better, hoping Superman is worth it. I've dared to venture back into single issues for the first time in nearly 10 years. I'll give it a few issues to get better.

I guess Justice League was popular in these parts. Not a copy to be found at the local Hastings (which is the only place to find comics in BFE, Idaho).

I'm pretty psyched. Darkseid looks awesome, and in Geoff's hands I think we will get a kick ass darkseid that final crisis failed to deliver.

Why does he have pink on him? Only Galactus can pull off pink.

ummmmm...was it me, or did JL #3 suck. Like, really, really, really suck.
1) I have no idea what was going on.
2) Was...was Superman dismembering Parademons? Did I see that right? Was he actively killing? If so, this is pretty much not cool at all. I know I've been actively mocking all the change-resistant, fuddy-duddy nerds out there, but Superman tearing sentient, organic creatures to shreds pretty much doesn't jive with ANY interpretation of the character. Ever.
3) Wonder Woman is so useless.
4) The Aquaman reveal was hilarious. Not in a good way.

I'm not dropping it.
Yet.
At the very least, the Johns/Frank Shazam stuff will keep me around for a bit.
But this was just a bad comic. Not quite as outright insulting as "the goddamn Batman", but shitty nonetheless.

And so the fill in's begin
From DC Universe: The Source
"Multiple Eisner Award-winning artist Gene Ha will be joining the JUSTICE LEAGUE – not as a team member, but as a special guest illustrator for issue #7. But that’s not all that makes #7 so notable; the first issue following the origin story of the World’s Greatest Super Heroes, it is also the first story to see the fully formed team in the present day. Who’s joined the team? What’s changed?
And wait, there’s more.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #7 will also feature the first appearance of Shazam in DC COMICS-THE NEW 52. THE CURSE OF SHAZAM will unfold as a backup series in the LEAGUE monthly, written by New York Times bestselling author Geoff Johns and illustrated by acclaimed artist Gary Frank. The back up feature will reveal an all-new origin for the character.
The main story of JUSTICE LEAGUE #7 serves as the prologue to “The Villain’s Journey,” a new, present day story arc which will pick up with the return of the regular series artist Jim Lee in issue #9. In the meantime, we’ve got a first look at Ha¹s take on the team."

I don't mind fill-ins so much, especially when they're not in the middle of an arc. I'd rather have the book out on time with a fill-in than the other way around.
heck, Lee has done better than Rags Morales did on Action, which I'm surprised about.

The only way Justice League could be any worse would be if it was called Youngblood. These are terrible comics. I'm really having trouble finding anything positive to say about them. "You were touching my lasso". Seriously? It just happened to get draped over Hal's forearm? Was he patting her on the ass?
This is a lazily written, painfully stupid comic. Jim Lee's art does absolutely ZERO for me. But, because I'm an obsessive-compulsive who takes comics more seriously than current events, I'm having trouble convincing myself to drop this book. This is the "spine" of the New DC, and I want to give it a chance to right the ship. Origin stories, especially TEAM origin stories are always awkward, so I'm trying to be nice and cut these guys some slack. Plus, Geoff Johns rarely lets me down.
But, man...if this didn't have the JL brand-name on it, I think loads more people would be screaming their heads off.

The fact that it has Geoff Johns name on it is the only reason I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt.....but still---- bleaugh.
I actually like the Jim Lee artwork, but I do get annoyed that Jim Lee gets so much more acclaim than artists like Steranko, Jim Starlin (in his heyday), Barry Windsor-Smith, etc....
Oh well.... but I'm a bit curious if the 'rush' at the comic stores will start to die down soon, now that a few months have passed. From talking to comic dealers in town, sales have been good for the new 52..... so far.
But, I'm skeptical- guess we'll see in 2012....

It's not that Jim Lee doesn't deserve acclaim, he's a skilled draftsman, but...
Does his artwork ever give the impression of motion? Action? How about EMOTION? Do you think we'd be able to tell the difference between a Jim Lee head shot of Superman and one of Bruce Wayne? He'd probably give Bruce some stubble since he's, y'know, "dark".
His style is dated, and ill-suited to DC Characters in general. I wouldn't even mention him in the same breath as the guys CAM just brought up, let alone Kirby, Eisner, etc.
Honestly, most of the time in JL I can't even tell what's going on. The art doesn't tell a story. It's just a series of images.
I'm INFINITELY more impressed with the work that Francis Manapul is doing over on Flash, which is dynamic, original, innovative, and fresh. I daresay that Manapul is the best Flash artist since Infantino.
You know who I wish was doing the art on this Justice League run? Barry Kitson. He's done great Justice League work in the past, and he can actually tell a story.
