It's not that Jim Lee doesn't deserve acclaim, he's a skilled draftsman, but... Does his artwork ever give the impression of motion? Action? How about EMOTION? Do you think we'd be able to tell the difference between a Jim Lee head shot of Superman and one of Bruce Wayne? He'd probably give Bruce some stubble since he's, y'know, "dark". . amen and amen. i think h e's a greta guy and LOOOOVED his early 90's x-men but it's formulaic now, just splash page after splash page. " ok...i'll this page draw one BIG panel of two beef cakes punching, then on the next page one BIIIIIIG panel across both pages of 2 beefcakes punching and pepper is with a closeup of a hawt chick being surprised, then i'l do some erotic pin-ups of unrealistic women.... heck..i'll just take the pencils from x-men vol 2 issue 6 and erase cyclop's visor and...."

Manupal's art is gorgeous, but I had to drop Flash. I just couldn't get into the story. I know alot of people are actually digging it, but I'm just not a fan. His art is gorgeous though. Maybe if I hear good things about the second arc I'll jump back on.

I've been loving Flash, but that fourth issue was kind of a drag.

Well, this fifth issue wasn't as bad as the last one...
Oh wait, yes it was.
NOTHING HAPPENS in Justice League. NOTHING. And the Batman/Green Lantern shit is beyond hackneyed.
Seriously. Why am I bothering with this drivel? Oh, that's right...because I just can't wrap my head around that Geoff Johns is capable of writing a comic this mediocre. Therefore, I'll stick it out til the conclusion of the second full arc.
But, really...let's not kid ourselves. If this book wasn't called "Justice League" and featured Wildstorm characters or whatever, people would be CRUCIFYING it for how awful it is.

Shameful.
So, the best villain in the DC Universe is nothing more than a completely one-dimensional video game boss. Awesome.
I'm buying this book for at least the next ten issues for the Shazam back-up, but I think I've lost all faith in Geoff Johns. There's really no excuse for this book to be this bad. If it was anyone else's name on it, people would be screaming bloody murder. Jim Lee is awful. Everyone looks exactly the same. Same body type. Same face (including Wonder Woman). The action isn't even clear.
I'm gonna do a full read-through of the story, possibly this weekend. But, as it stands, I hate this comic.

I got my last batch of comics and canceled my subscriptions. I'm probably only gonna get a handful of comics from now on. I don't need all that other shit. This one will probably be lost in the flood, too.

Are you sticking with any of 'em? Flash? Action Comics?

I'll probably stick with Flash if the storyline gets going, and I'll keep on with Action and Supes. Anything further would be probably Animal Man and Swamp Thing, and TMNT if anything but that'd be about it.

The next Flash arc is his first visit to Gorilla City, so I'm totally on-board. It completely confirms that this is a full reboot for Barry, so now I'm more interested.
As of right now, the ONLY DC books I'm buying are Flash, Superman, Action, and...Justice League (even though I should know better). I may give that new Earth-2 book a shot when it starts in May. And, of course, Grant Morrison returns to Batman Inc in May as well...although I really still consider that a pre-reboot title, and will file it as such.

I agree- There a whole slew of very good illustrators doing comics nowadays that I think are working now- that unfortunately I DON'T think are very good comic book storytellers.
(Part of it may be the stretched out stories as well though... in either case, very few comics on the stands that make me want to rush out and buy them--- would rather save up pennies and get the hardback reprints of the older works at this stage.) *sigh*

I REALLY dug Geoff Johns' stuff early on--- but after awhile, all the cross-continuity stuff killed the enjoyment of too many books by him..... and I'm not suprised if his position as DC's 'creative director' has affected his story efforts as well, at this stage...

Hey! This issue didn't suck!
Much, much better. A fun, mostly stand-alone issue with great Gene Ha artwork.
Not sure about Hal's over-the-top characterization as a wise-ass...it's a bit much. Hal absolutely SHOULD be a little cocky, but his cool should be understated, like Han Solo. Suddenly Hal is spouting off like he's Spider-Man.

well, i sat down and read the whole firs arc front-to-back and i'm glad i had lower expectations. val and kev and the rest of you guys made great points, and as my expectation was low i just enjoyed the mayhem. i liked wonder woman stabbing darkseid in the eye. ;D batman was the only character behaving in any way recognizable. cyborg was completely hackneyed! ok, a high school kids get instantly converted into a cyborg in one evening and INSTANTLY teams with the justice league? whaaaa....? it took cadet kirk longer to be captain in abram's trek! i "get" the need for ethnic diversity and so on- but this is such a contrivance! it would make muuuuuch more sense to have cyborg as a teen titans alum schooling superboy and the lot, but to have a teenager with NO experience be "up'd" to the level of the icons? riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigghhhhhhhht. darksied was a huuuuuuge letdown overall. they should have built UP to darksied after first grappling with steppenwolf and kaliback and so forth. darkseid wouldn't lower himself to reveal to a little planet like earth just yet, and he doesn't like to bother with physicality unless he is ready to annihilate an entire world. it DID feel like "story scenes" from a video game. val- the scene where superman tears parademons apart- that actually reminds me of the last two ep's of S:TAS where superman incinerated parademons with heat vision. since S:tas was modelled on the byrne superman i think we can infer that the parademons aren't really living things- just automatons like zombie-replicants or something. anyway- a VERY subpar plot for the flagship title of new52. next i am going to soldier on through superman vol3 and supergirl and i'm saving action for last! since JL will have a shazam feature i'll hold them for my son. but i'm otherwise done with johns/lee on JL. i gave him the whole series for his collection.

this just in: This September will mark the one year anniversary of DC Comics' "The New 52" relaunch, and apparently the company is planning something special. Bleeding Cool has learned that for September, all 52 comic books will be numbered #0 instead of #13 (which will run in October). The zero issues will act as prequels to the first issues of their respective series, consisting of flashbacks, origins, etc. Instead of one month later, for example, it's more like five years earlier. Says Bleeding Cool, "This might be the perfect opportunity, say, in Batgirl to show what happened in South Africa. Justice League to show disparate superheroes working a case, but who never meet. Batman, to see where the Owls were the night that the Waynes were murdered. Stuff like that." Additionally, the site notes that there may be "some creator credit surprises" for these issues.

I've got no problem with this. It'll probably help iron out some of the continuity hiccups.
I'm just happy to see that they're sticking with this New 52 thing. I may not like all of it, but at least they aren't pulling a "FOOLED YOU!" anytime soon. I think this stuff is here to stay.

10-15 years is about as often as DC reboots anyway, so if this lasts that long, it's par for the course. They did a moderate/hard reboot in 86, a soft reboot/ironing out with Zero Hour in 94, another soft reboot with Infinite Crisis in 05/06, and now a hard reboot in 2011. All of those had the same thing happen where some stuff got started over from scratch while successful titles kinda kept going as if nothing had happened.
The quality of this stuff was uneven from the word "go", but the amount of market share DC has reclaimed/held on to for nearly a year now is really, really impressive. From a business standpoint, this has been a rousing success. And with the first round of hardcovers and tpbs arriving from this stuff, they'll get yet another spike in sales/market share, even though Marvel has pretty much reclaimed there spot as top dog (something I don't see changing this summer with the release of the Avengers movie)
I don't think they're gonna bail on it anytime soon.

So, the latest issue of Justice League was...quite good, actually.
I'm in shock. I was really caught up in it. Great stuff! It read like GOOD Geoff Johns, and Lee's art was rather nice.

I too was underwhelmed by the first arc, but I liked the stand alone issues afterward and really liked the "Villain's Journey" arc. The best aspect of the book is the team dynamic and how the heroes deal with each other. Like at the end of the latest issue; Aquaman wants to be in charge (again), citing as the King of Atlantis he's best suited as leader. Batman (who IS in charge) retorts with, "And what have you done for them lately?" driving the point home about Aquaman's current hiatus from his underwater kingdom. Good stuff.
The Superman/Wonder Woman romance is an interesting place to go, let's just hope they keep it in the background and it doesn't take over the story. I always thought the Batman/Wonder Woman angle was more interesting (as seen in the DCAU), but with Lois not in the picture presently now's as good a time as ever for her to hook up with Superman.
Also kudos for making Steve Trevor a good character. Who knew? I'll be following his adventures in "Justice League of America"; a nice place to collect a lot of the leftover heroes like Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Hawkman etc. and a logical response by a government who feels threatened by a team of super-powered beings out of their control. I look forward to the inevitable JL vs. JLA crossover.
Btw, Jim Lee is leaving JL. Honestly I'm a bit surprised; he is responsible for redesigning the entire DCU, draws JL for MOST of a year, then is done. Back to being...co-publisher? Whatever...

JL has pretty consistently been the worst book I buy every month for the last year. But I'm still buying it. I should be shot.
