After watching the "Lois Lane" screen tests years go I can see why Donner and co. went with Kidder. In terms of personality and chemistry with Reeve she was the best choice.
If Kidder hadn't gotten the role or turned it down do you feel there was anyone else that was a good runner up or would have been a decent pick?

Who was worse? Stockard Channing or Kate Bosworth?

Out of the screen tests, I quite like Susan Blakely.
After recently watching some episodes from the 70s spidey series, Joanna Cameron could have been a pretty cool Lois.

I thought Anne Archer was pretty hot, but didn't have the Lois thing going.

Agreed.... I actually am suprised that she's one of the actresses that actually got BETTER with age and more attractive, in watching her appearance as the President's wife on "West Wing". While I'm glad that they went through the trouble of clearing some of the auditions for dvd--- I'm suprised that the casting ended up (unless I'm wrong, I thought I read or heard it somewhere) between Channing and Kidder.... if only based on the screentests, I don't think either one was THAT great. (But then again.....we only saw a handful of screentests- this could have been ALL the screentests they did? Wonder if Salkind's wife's dentist's secretary was also considered for Lois Lane?)

After viewing them all, Kidder was the right choice. The pink underwear line was treated like a throw away line from most of the actresses, but Kidder played it off as a funny moment, especially with her reaction. I wish we could see that particular screen test uncut instead of just in snippets like we got. It was kind of funny that her hair looked like Lois' hair from the 50's. All she needed was the purple dress and pillbox hat.
I don't get why Donner didn't yell "STOP! You're outta here!" when Lesley Ann Warren did her test. What gets me is that in the Look Up in the Sky documentary, she mentions how she didn't want to be as broad as she was in the TV musical, which was EXACTLY how she was playing it.

Love Lesley Ann Warren--- but she definitely came off VERY broadly. What Kidder added at the time I think was a sense of 'gravity' to the role. You could buy her as someone directed by Donner who was funny but had a hard enough edge to convincingly beat the crap out of someone who went too far. Under Lester, she was a whiny, unpleasant, and needy. Funny thing is: Didn't the paperback of the Making of say it was down to Lesley Ann Warren and Kidder? (Will have to look up that book again)

I still wonder about the screen test selections that they chose for the dvd, were these the most recognizeable ones, or were these the personal picks of Donner/Salkinds for who were really the ones considered for 'the final round' so to speak? Lois seems to be a role every actress covets, not suprised if every actress in the world auditions for it. Thank goodness we got (mostly) unknowns for both Supes and Lois. I always thought Bosworth was 'ok' in SR.... but in talking about the casting options of STM for Lois, can't help but also wonder about other auditions for SR as well.... (Did Singer even bother with them for Lois? A lot of directors reuse the same actors to avoid hassles..... like James Marsden, Spacey, etc.--- If Spacey hadn't reccomended Bosworth, I wonder if Singer would have chosen someone who was REALLY unknown for Lois... )

Routh tested with Keri Russell, not a better choice, in my opinion. She also has that teenager look and attitude.

I forgot that about Keri Russell. If Abrams Superman script had been used I wonder if he would have suggested her for Lois Lane? Its strange that something like a screen test actually uses well known actors and actresses who never end up in the movie. I remember watching Tobey MaGuire's Spider-man screen test and thinking "Is that Eliza Dusku as MJ?" Didn't Reeve test with Holly Palance? Screen tests are just always strange to watch. Lyle Waggoners Batman screen test: ;D

When Abrams’ script was in commission, McG was going to direct it and I believe he had Scarlett Johansson in mind for Lois. I’m pretty sure Russell was a contender for the role during Superman Returns, until the Bosworth equation came into play. I’m not sure if she did a screen test herself, but if they did, they should have noted how the chemistry between her and Routh didn’t work.
Yes, that was Eliza Dushku. That test is pretty cool, as you can see MaGuire's commitment to the role. I think he lost it by the second film. I hope the same doesn’t happen to Andrew Garfield.
I was going to ask about Holly Palance’s participation. Was she seriously considered for the role or was just there to play off of Reeve? Donner knew who she was, as she played the maid who hung herself in The Omen (“LOOK AT ME, DAMIEN!”) Thanks to her, I can’t get on a high rise amusement park ride without thinking about that.
The test with Lyle Waggoner and the other actor reading for Robin, who I first thought was a young Richard Dreyfuss, is an interesting one. Adam West claims that he was hired on the spot, but the tests were done to give the network a choice, which is usually what they ask if you're set on casting one person. Waggoner resembled the Bruce Wayne in the comics more at that time than West did, who had blonde hair in his screen test, except he wouldn’t have grasped the portrayal West did. The other guy who read for Robin had a girly voice and had nowhere near the exuberance Burt Ward naturally had in the role.

Waggoner as a more 'straight faced' Wayne would have been cool! *sigh*

Waggoner had a good look for a 40's/50's superhero and the dude was in good shape. Thats probably why he got the Steve Trevor role in Wonder Woman years later. But as far as Batman goes West was the best choice. So was Ward as Robin.

Wasn't Claire Danes also in the running for Lois in SR?
I also remember the "fan choice" being Rose Byrne, because of her resemblance as a hotter Kidder, but I'm not sure if she ever got close to an audition or casting - I think I read here that she turned down the role due to fears of type casting, although given some of the crap she's been in since then I'm not sure whether to believe that.

Well, for what they wanted to do with Batman on the tv show, I agree. But, it's interesting to be able to get a taste of what we might have gotten if they decided to be more serious with the material....

I don't remember this....but that would have been an interesting choice! You're totally right about a certain resemblance to Kidder.... an aside- that "Damages" show that she's been on that's critically acclaimed is REALLY overrated..... (Sat through two seasons because it was dirt cheap at Target), she woulda been better off doing SR....although I doubt it would have saved the sad fate it got afterwards....

Yes, he would have been more appropriate if the series took that tone, but they did not want to take that route. I read a really interesting fan article that questioned what the series would have been like with that approach, citing that The Riddler, The Penguin and the first appearance of Catwoman’s characterizations would have not needed to be changed, but it did recommend Jack Palance as The Joker. I could really imagine that while reading the first issues of the comics.
I don’t remember much buzz for Rose Byrne back then, but she is more along the lines of what I would have wanted to see. I'm not sure about now, because I want to see what Amy Adams does with the role.

I'm concerned that she'll play things too broadly- but I just don't see too many suprises with her cast. The unfortunate thing was that a LOT of the cast of Watchmen were solid, but under Snyder.....ughhhh.....
I would have LOVED it--- and, yeah, you totally could have kept the rest the same. Pity that the Batman tv series STILL isn't available on dvd....*sigh*

Claire Danes was amazing as a teenaged actor in that cult tv show....but, somehow, as an adult actress, I find her REALLY bland. (Much moreso than Bosworth)

My thoughts EXACTLY with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, but we've at least seen her in both pictures and in trailers. She seems like a lousy cross between Julie Newmar and Audrey Hepburn.
Danes is very sickly looking, notably in Stardust. Her head is too large for her body or she needs a sandwich.

GREAT movie....in spite of Danes' presence. (though, I believe that she was cast to be a 'American name actor' for funding....*sigh*)
