Anyone read the first issue yet?
It's part of DCs new weekly comic initiative.
Personally I found it rather disappointing. The artwork was bland and the whole thing reads like a child's story book.
It features Otis and rips off Superman 4.

I hope it isn't a sign of things to come with the new weekly digital initiative.

I should have saved my dollar for Ghostbusters. At least I would have a full issue with some semblence of story. The only way I buy the next is if they promise a nude pictoral of Allison Mack and Erica Durance full-out tongue kissing. Yeaaahh .... uh, I TOLD YOU WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED IT'S MY PRIVATE TIME, NOW GET OUT!

I will check out the first floppy when they release it in a couple of weeks, but given what you guys have been saying, my expectations will not be high.

It's a geeky term for the actual physical issue.

Please don't use that term. I long ago swore to kill people who use it, and I like you very much, and it would break my heart to take a contract out on you.

lol...I gotta be careful now, I have pictures up on here, so my anonymity is gone, a hitman would have no problems. ;D
I have really only started to use the term for the last year or so since digital has been starting to take off (and truthfully, the first time I ever really heard the term was on a podcast about a year ago), when I specifically want to reference the actual physical issue, not digital, and also not as part of a trade. It really does kinda seem to fit, when you want to be specific. Though, I guess one could just say "the physical issue". Do people actually really have an issue with the term. Is it like a hipster thing? The person I heard use the term was a 50 year old man, who was in no way a hipster, lol.

It's an elitist thing. I've been hearing it for years with people who "only read graphic novels, and don't bother with FLOPPIES anymore". It's pretentious, and it's pejorative, and it's the kind of thing you see on the Screaming Troll Bleeding Cool message boards.

ah, I hear it on the Comic Geek Speak podcast (great podcast by the way), they don't use it in an elitist way. They talk about picking up the "Floppies" all the time. I can see where it would be pretty annoying if people use it as a sort of derogatory term for the physical comic.

Issue 2 wasn't as bad. They also seem to be sticking to the actors likenesses at times...Michael Ironside shows up as Sam Lane.
Anyway that's my moment of weakness over...not buying anymore issues.

I got the second "chapter" of the first "episode". Uh, this could get confusing ... But it was much, much better. So I won't give up on it quite yet.

I've stuck with it through six mini-issues, and it's getting better. It's still Smallville, but you should know what to expect after 10 years. No secret by now is that Hank Henshaw is this "season's" guest, undoubtedly setting up a Cyborg storyline.
It's not half bad, but I've read better.

Hank Henshaw...Interesting. I have only read up to #3. I need to catch up. But, the first 3 were only ok.

I don't really care, but it's stupid that they can't use Stephanie, if they want to, because of some stupid editorial mandate, no doubt from Didio.

So, the first "episode" of Smallville Season 11 is done. Here's what I think of the run so far ...
- The art and colors are pretty good, but the whole point of this series' existence relies on two things: following the continuity of the show and using the actors' likeness. Sometimes, the characters don't always look like their real-life counterparts. Naturally, he's not wearing the traditional costume, as seen in the finale. The trunks are gone, but I like this costume better than the one Jim Lee designed. It's not the "Kryptonian armor" bullshit. Just a trunkless Superman costume. It's also explained that the raised shield is really a lead plate to protect his heart from a Kryptonite bullet. Works for me.
- The overall story was pretty good. The characterizations fit to what was established in the show. I really liked the exchange between Superman and Gen. Lane. Obviously, Lane knows it's Clark because he's met Clark on numerous occassions and Superman doesn't wear a mask. But Gen. Lane can't let on that he knows who Superman is, so he has to blast him out of the sky on orders anyway. Another exchange between the pair is a strong one. Superman burst into Lex's high-rise office and violently confronts him at one point. But Gen. Lane later tells him "men in our position can't afford to lose our tempers," played in a way that sounds like a father's gentle admonishment. You can sense he respects Superman/Clark even though he can't blow his cover.
- The release format mirrors that of an episode in a way. Each week, we get a segment of the "show" up to the commercial break. So, just like six segments made one episode, six weekly installments equals one "episode." The "Guardian" story took 12 parts, so it was like a two-hour premiere. As a whole, the segments work fine. But, read week to week, it can be jarring. The first segment is the pre-credits tease, so that's why I thought it was such a weak release. I didn't understand the format at the time.
- Hank Henshaw was used rather well, but of course he was just a pawn for another Lex Luthor scheme. This one was to paint Superman with a trace amount of a radioactive substance, allowing him to track Superman at all times. Of course, this is going to keep Clark and Lois apart, and gives some explanation/storyline excuse for why they don't get married any sooner. That keeps with the finale of the show, which has them getting hitched seven years later. It's nice that the writer doesn't beat us over the head with this, it's implied.
- The big setup: So, the last few years of Smallville required a new villian every season, starting with season 8 (because of the absense of Lex). While it seemed like Henshaw would be the villain, he was quickly dispatched and revealed as a pawn. The big setup leads to a major event, not necessarily a villain. Earth-Two Chloe shows up to find Superman, but is intercepted by Oliver Queen and Chloe. Earth-Two Chloe is shot by someone who followed her, but not before warning everyone of "The Crisis" that's coming, something that destroyed Earth-Two. Obvious where this is going, but who knows what form it will take.
Anyway, it's not the worst thing I've ever read, but it could use some work. Up next, Smallville finally gets to do its take on Batman. Not that it should matter much, as part of the appeal of having Batman on Smallville was to get a real actor to interpret the role. Yet, it's still exciting to see how they'll cook up the Batman to fit into the Smallville universe.
