Again, the wanton death and destruction and the fact that Kal-El's very presence on Earth caused this would be a fantastic, logical way to re-introduce Luthor to the new cinematic version. A lot of folks will see Superman as a symbol of hope and others will become paranoid that he'll only escalate the violence, sort of like what Gordon tried to warn Batman about at the end of "Batman Begins." it was touched on in "The Dark Knight" as much of the population wanted Batman to give in to the Joker's demand to turn himself in. For the Man of Steel follow-up, Lex Luthor will be a rallying point for those people.
Now, if only I could get work at Legendary or Syncopy as a writer ...

Yes I agree Faora was perfect. Better casting than Zod in fact. Anyone think Daniel Craig would have been better?

No. Daniel Craig would not have been better as Faora. As you said, she was perfect.

Why was the Superman suit on a Kryptonian space probe from 18,000 years ago?
The best/ lamest deus ex machina I could think of was the ship made it via Ghost Jor-El's command? I guess?

Here's my best theory: The digital comic prologue shows that Kara Zor-El was part of the Kryptonian group of explorers/colonizers. Notice how Kal found one sleep chamber with a mummified body, and then we saw another was open ... with no body. I'm thinking she and others from the house of El were on the ship found in the Earth's artic region. That's why a uniform with the El symbol is conveniently in that ship. Boom. Now, the ship was there for 18,000 years because either they did not travel via wormhole or the wormhole took the ship back in time. The empty capsule isn't enough info to gauge whether it was Kara or someone else who woke up and left. And, how long ago did that person wake up and where is that person now? It's obviously a set-up for Supergirl.

What exactly was "300 cycles of somatic conditioning?" Freezing their asses in ice and re-educating them, a la "Demolition Man." Boom.

And was it just me, or was Stabler a bad ass mother in this? I mean, he sees how powerful these Kryptonians are and he still pulls his blade, all like, I'ma cut a bitch!

My guess is the Phantom Zone is just a place to hold the popsicle people. Or maybe they're only frozen while in transit to the Zone. It wasn't really clear, so I'm just guessing.
Thinking on it more, none of that stuff really matters. Just like the old films, the Zone is nothing more than a plot device to keep some Kryptonians alive through the destruction, that way Superman has someone to go to fist city with later. Other than serving its purpose as plot device, I don't give a shit if the Zone and re-education completely makes sense. It's not a major detail that makes or breaks the movie, old movies or new movie.

So, why was Clark wearing a red cape and pretending to be Superman when he was playing as a child?

So, why was Clark wearing a red cape and pretending to be Superman when he was playing as a child? You know, I'll give you that one. Superman seems to exist in a vacuum within his movies, not inspired to wear a cape because he saw a movie or read a comic in which a hero wore a red cape. I think it was something meant to tug at our heart strings because every young boy has done that ... but it doesn't make sense to see that in the movie.

Maybe Jonathan and Martha raised him watching the Reeve movies?

The theory that the suit is there because Kryptonians were already out there exploring space and shit makes sense. Yes! That is the perfect plant to have Supergirl in this story arc, if that wasn't her who got up and left then who else could it be?? But then it's the age thing isn't it? if the ships been there for 18k! hmmm... The end with the kid in the red blanket. I love it, however I would have preferred it if the kid was inspired to do that after watching Superman on the news or something and then running out into the yard with the blanket and being Superman, as we all done as kids. But it's a beautiful scene and I love it.

When Zod attacks Jor-El's home and says, "Concentrate fire on the main doors," did anyone think of, "Around the survivors, a perimeter create"?

I'm pretty certain that the Phantom Zone is meant to be in the gap between dimensions . . . or something.
Basically, it's the same principle by which Kal-El could travel to Earth so fast. A wormhole, of sorts, but the Phantom Zone projector keeps them permanently in the hole, but tethered to our universe so they don't get lost in there.
Yeah for sheer impact . . . Smallville Battle > Metropolis Battle
One other thing, I never once thought while I was watching 'Oh, I'm basically watching STM again'. Definitely felt like its own film.

I still think the STM Phantom Zone was better. Simple, elegant and dramatic. Less is more sometimes.

I'm open to a different interpretation of the phantom zone. But yeah, as I say, I think this film's version could have been communicated a bit more clearly.
You don't get much simpler than being trapped in a two-dimensional disk that can only be cracked with a nuclear bomb! I do love that version. Something really sinister about the empty disk floating towards them when the trio are on trial
. . . anyway . . .

At the end of MoS, the Kryptonians didn't all die, right? They just got their asses sent back to the Phantom Zone?
So perhaps we will see more Faora in another movie. (In CGI, please?)

I love that music from Flash Gordon too. Very eerie and hypnotic. I think it's also playing when he is being taken to be executed, right? And also when he and Aura are flying to Arboria?

I could have sworn they, for a split second or two put Reeve's face over Cavill's when Supes was under that ship that was pushing out that gravity beam things.. When it showed the close up of his face, I swear Reeve was there, even Cassie noticed it. I noticed it on Monday. It still stood out this morning. My wife also saw it. It's like a flash. I spoke to Jim Bowers about it cause I thought it was the cameo he was talking about...obviously it wasn't. He is going to see it tonight. Will be interesting to hear his thoughts. Yes, I saw this instantly. It seemed weird, like it was almost deliberate. Or maybe they do look alike. I don't know . . .
