I wouldn't say all... Danny DeVito's got to count for something, right?

Not really. Devito is like Pluto, he's too small. He's not even a planet anymore. Smith on the other hand, he's almost as big as Jupiter.

In Ahnold's defense, the state was going bankrupt way before he was elected Governator. Yup, pretty true. The next governor is in for an even bigger problem, because if a charismatic and likable guy like Arnold can't get much done with the stubborn state legislature, who can?

If Reagan were alive, he'd have problems. California is just way too big for it's own good.

Isn't California one of the "richest states in the Union" though? I don't understand why public cuts were not made before it was too late.
I've never heard of public sector workers being paid with IOU's before!

The problem is the politicians. If you have greedy, soulless politicians in office, even the most richest state in the union can go bankrupt.
It's called Pork barrel spending.

"Hey, that dude from Scott Pilgrim has a great look, nay...a PERFECT look for Superman! Maybe they should cast him for Nolan's...oh wait...fuck."
He's matured well, and should silence the people who complained that he was too youthful looking in SR. Damn it.
Why? Why should we have to deal with the agony of recasting this role? The worry that they're gonna do something stupid like put one of the Twilight guys in the cape, or Welling, or some underwear model, when you've got a perfectly good Superman walking around right now.
Do they really think the audience is so stupid that we couldn't accept that this movie is NOT a sequel to SR? Isn't the fact that they greenlighted a "vague sequel" to the previous Superman franchise MORE CONFUSING than just getting this guy back for a reboot?
Stupid.

Everything you just said, is why I'm done with comic book movie hype & anticipation. For Good.
We've been raped so many times with this type of shit that my butthole hurts.
WB has forever ruined my ability to enjoy & anticipate the hype for a comic movie.
If its surprisingly good, fine, if not, well, that's no surprise.
JADED. Feh.

But wait a second, in the last 5 years, would you not say we've gotten more home runs than strikeouts?
The Dark Knight, arguably the finest superhero film ever made. Tremendoulsy succesful and nearly universally acclaimed.
Iron Man, surpassed expectations in terms of quality AND performance. And for a character that is historically considered second tier.
Batman Begins, a succesful reboot, despite initial concern that the audience would still think it was either Batman 5 or a prequel to the Keaton movie.
Incredible Hulk, a "soft reboot" (exactly the approach they should take with Superman, incidentally), which turned a profit, and is generally considered to be as good of a Hulk movie as one could reasonably expect.
Superman Returns, a movie which I know that YOU (Mav) adore. Me too, for that matter. And despite it's failings, delivered us a worthy succesor to Reeve in Brandon Routh.
2/3rds of the Spider-Man franchise.
2/3rds of the X-Men franchise.
That's a heck of a track record for ANY subgenre. If we were talking about straight-up sci-fi, action, or horror flicks, we wouldn't have a ratio this good (although, to be fair, I think there are far more superhero flicks being made these days than classic sci-fi movies).
Despite the recasting of Banner for Avengers, I've seen nothing but good indications that Avengers will be anything other than a big, fun, exciting movie. And to me, that bit of recasting is a minor concern, because you're basically talking about a supporting part in an ensemble movie.
The ONLY difference between superhero movies and other genre flicks is the hype machine behind them. It's inescapable, and it's detrimental. But this is a golden age of geekery by any measure. We had nearly 10 years where the only superhero movies we got were Superman 3 and 4, and then post-Bats89 we got about a dozen mediocre, overblown, batclones. Here we sit, one year before a summer that is going to give us Green Lantern, Captain America, and Thor within 2 months of each other. And the law of averages dictates that at least one of those will be really good.

But wait a second, in the last 5 years, would you not say we've gotten more home runs than strikeouts? And what's happening now? Norton FIRED. Routh FIRED. Howard FIRED. Hey let's get the BATMAN guy to direct Superman! It all sounds a bit familiar to me. ANYTHING Nolan does is good, so, that's a bit of an exception ;D Part 2 is not nearly as good for me. The absence of Howard is a huge sticking point for me. And I thought part 2 fell quite short of part 1. Agreed. Nolan, etc... And then what happened? And then what happened? And then what happened? And then what happened? You're missing my point here babe. I'm talking about this: They give us something good, & then for reasons that aren't good enough, they fuck it up & take it away. Get it? One that was fucked up in EVERY instance you just named except for Nolan. Again, I dont think you get my point: Comic Book movie makers giveth.....& then they taketh away. Feh, I'll care if & when its good. And if it is, they will fuck it up with subsequent movies. That's the real law of averages for comic book movies. We all know its true. Except regarding Nolan. I'm tired fo getting invested. If they are good, fine, if not, its expected. Feh.

The only franchise that has stood up over repeated sequels is Bond. Indy sputtered after 3 (and there are those who might say the 2nd one disappoints), Star Wars after 3. Iron man 2 is, in my opinion, no more flawed than the theatrical Superman 2.
I'm also of the grotesquely unpopular opinion that X3 is as good as X1, and that the only really good installment of that franchise is X2.
Your problems are valid, but in no way are they peculiar to comic book movies.
At this point, Bryan Singer has revealed himself to be an unreliable, flakey diva. He probably will never match Usual Suspects or X2. SR didn't come close. Valkyrie is painful to watch. I don't care if he's gone. I didn't think Howard was particularly good as Rhodey, Cheadle's a better actor, but wrong for the part. It's not like we're recasting Spock in the 2nd season of Trek.

Theres bits I like about X3 but Singers X3 would have blown Ratners out of the water. Its the one thing that makes me wish SR had never happened.
I'm REALLY excited to see what Matthew Vaughn does with First Class. He's the one that gave us Grammer as Beast, which was brilliant casting.
As for X3 they totally fucked up the Phoenix and her motivations. And I don't even mean changing the alien entity bit. I mean they didn't show her torn enough between her two personalities. I didn't feel sorry enough for Jean when I should have. She just felt like another threat most of the time, which was to simple. The little bit they shot to make her more sympathetic got cut out of the movie. Thanks, 20th Century FUX.
The first hour of Xmen 1 is brilliant. Its a good movie, not just a good comic book movie. It gets wonky once Magneto introduces his master plan...which is kinda stupid.
To keep this on Superman...Routh looks great in those pics. WB has the perfect Superman RIGHT. IN. FRONT. OF. THEM. But ego and greed is going to make them fuck up and not use him. Fucking idiots.

COME ON WARNER BROTHERS! JUST LOOK AT THE GUY! HE'S FREAKIN' SUPERMAN! If Nolan is smart, he'll choose Routh for the role. Recast everyone else for all I care, but man, Routh has gotten HUGE! Kinda reminds me of this guy in his prime! He makes the guy next to him look like a midget!

^Val, for me SR is better/more enjoyable than all the other Singer movies. I def think it's a great movie, it may not be for everybody, but for some of us is def a gem of a film. MAV, I know EXACTLY how you feel. I agree with everything you said. So, WB/Nolan think they can just manufacture a great Superman just like that? I don't think it works that way, especially with this character. I mean I just look at Brandon in those pics and he just exudes the character. And no, it's not just that he's very good looking, it's so much more than that. Brandon truly embodies the character, he looks powerful and impossing yet accesible and inspiring. Just perfect. But WB and Nolan apparently think they can easily find all that somewhere else.

I agree that there are parts of X3 that are good- but there are enough stupid choices that really lobotomized that franchise by Ratner. (Although I can't forgive Matthew Vaughn for destroying Cyclops & Xavier, but keeping horrible Storm in his draft of X3.... not to mention the good but not great direction of "Stardust" and (to me) the disappointing so-so "Kickass" movie).
I also agree that Xmen 1 is not a perfect film, but what had me going was HOW much they seemed to bend over backwards to be faithful in spirit to the comics AND change enough (to me) of the right elements (Rogue as a sympathetic heroine for the audience to introduce us into Xavier's school) to make it work. That wowed me and let forgive more than I normally would in a film. Could have done without Halle Berry's horrible "Storm" though....
And I TOTALLY agree about the Phoenix story. They took what should have been an incredibly compelling storyline and stripped it down into something simple and bland in X3. Thanks a lot, Ratner. Fox, too. ;p
And yeah.... seeing any picture of Routh makes me even sadder that he's not confirmed for Nolan's Superman. But, I still hold out that thin thin thin hope that he could still get that phone call....

i like that he's getting good gigs, i like that he's taking it in stride. reminds me of norton- why burn abridge when maybe the door could open in the future.
he definitely (sp?) looks the part -more than most of the other rumored atrocities being bandied about.
