So with a new movie out, it's inevitable that we will rank the [theatrical] films against each other. So let that process begin. I haven't seen MOS yet (I'm seeing the 7pm showing tomorrow night), and I'll update my post with where I think it falls.
STM SIII Donner SII SR Lester SII SIV Superman and the mole men

Ah! The inevitable thread!
Kudos to jimbo for including alternate "official-if-not-cannon" versions!
Ill do two lists. The "cannon" and the "extended/tv" versions. I think ill be close to what Uf and kev say.

Superman: The Movie (Theatrical) Superman II (Theatrical) Man of Steel
The Donner Cut, Superman III, Superman IV and Superman Returns are all steaming piles of shit to me, and films I'll never watch again. I won't even bother ranking them.

Strict rules:
1) superman the movie 2) man of steel 3/4) TIE superman returns/superman 2 5) superman 3 6) mole men 7) they made a fourth?
Jimbo rules (not that jimbo rules... well actually, I always thought jimbo ruled. Benign about it though)
1) superman the movie theatrical 2) man of steel theatrical (Extended version inevitable) 3) superman the movie RDC 4) superman 2- "ABC/international" 5/6) TIE: S2 theatrical and SR 7) superman 3 8) "there was, of course, a superman 4...which did not help the cause of comic book movies" - ilya salkind, 2006.

STM SII (Fan cuts) SR MOS SIV SIII
I should point out that I feel that MOS comes close to SR- The thing that weakens it isn't the story for me as much as (what I assume is) the editing and the too-fast cgi blur fighting. There are a lot of great ideas in it.
If you could blend the best of both MOS and SR, you'd have an AWESOME Superman film. Oh well...

A comment I'm seeing a lot of places and very accurate. Take the beauty and the sensibility and patience of Superman Returns with the spectacle and scale and nature of Man of Steel and you get the perfect Superman movie.
If the movie had more of the teaser's...wow, this goes for both movies, really, if the teasers were more accurate, we'd probably all be a lot happier. They both seem to imply the other's results.

Man of Steel Superman Superman II Superman Returns Superman III Superman IV
I can't let nostalgia let me ignore some of the more naive aspects of the Donner movie. What worked in 1978 is now quaint, and I just really can't get over what a stick in the mud Reeve is. And his Clark is too over the top with the bumbling stuff. I have never met anyone that socially awkward who wasn't mentally disabled somehow. It's just too campy for me.
Let the hate rain down on me now.

Agreed heck, if Routh got to take a few swings here and there the movie would have been twice as good. I don't need nostalgia to tell me STM is the best of the lot (flaws and all). The story is brilliantly told.

STM
SII/Man of Steel
SIII
SIV/SR
Last bit might be controversial but i at least find SIV entertaining and it's got a couple of solid performances in it from Reeve and Hackman.
STM will always be special and on its own, some part due to nostalgia on my part, but I do think it could have been closely rivaled by MOS if it had better structure.

Jeepers, is the SII ABC cut THAT good? I don't remember it being, it has been years since I've seen it, though. A lot of you surprisingly have it so highly placed.

It's the one I grew up with (along with 1984 commercials). SII extended works just as well.

ABSOLUTELY. Just thinking about it, what a film THAT would have been, eh? While Cavill was amazing, the sad thing is that if Routh had been in MOS, we all could have made a fan cut to mix SR & MOS both together to make THAT film!

Like everyone said if you could mash SR and MOS together we'd have a perfect Superman film. Mos has some of the same problems as SR in parts by then overcompensated for SRs flaws in other parts. This feels like Hulk/TIH and Punisher/Punisher Warzone all over again. Same complaints from many people who had issues with both and everything.
