So who was best?
Reeve still the man or has Cavill taken the throne?

As a great champion who is a failure with money and ex wives once said to be the man ya gotta beat the man. Chris Reeve is still the man. Cavill was ok. He's probably the best pick since Reeve but he didn't really get to show it. He lacked Chris Reeve's heart, nuance, and magnetism in the role. And Reeve's perfect superheroic jawline. But he had the physique. And he punched stuff. Because that matters above all else!

Reeve had a much better crew working with him that helped. Also, he was able to demonstrate more range. Not really fair to compare the 2 actors when they can only be as good as the material and "ground crew"
Plus, its WAY too early to tell.
But yeah, Reeve's "A friend" line sells it.

Yeah I feel the same way on a lot of that. Between the material and the directing Cavill didn't get the chance to show much. Could change in the sequel. But Reeve didn't have to grow into the role. He nailed it in the first movie.

To play devil's advocate, Reeve did work on the movie (shooting 2 movies at that) for well over a year to grow into the role.

Yep, Reeve was not exactly on good form during his Brando scenes

Agreed. One can look at the body of work to try to get a better sense of what they're capable of, though... and from what I read/hear, Cavill has been very good in other things, who knows if Reeve or Cavill had more acting training/experience before either one did Superman.
Still, though I would have preferred Routh, Cavill has a great presence and the right look for Superman imo....

To play devil's advocate, Reeve did work on the movie (shooting 2 movies at that) for well over a year to grow into the role. He started hitting his stride well before the year mark though. The best part with gauging Reeve's progress is you can usually tell what was shot first just by looking at him. Besides most actors on long film shoots have the same benefit. It's not like Cavills total shooting was done in a week either George Reeves certainly didn't have nearly as long as Cavill or Reeve on a tv filming schedule and it didn't take him very long to grow into the role. He's on it after Supeeman and the Mole Men and that only shot for a couple of weeks if that. Like Ye5man said its just as much about the range the material allows for.

I keep hearing Cold Light of Day is a pretty bad movie all around but I haven't seen it. Tried watching Immortals and while he wasn't bad he didn't knock my socks off either.

Wasn't the screen test in a Chris Reeve costume and a scence of STM? If so I hope it's on the blu ray and we can make a good comparison. Would love to see him in a Reeve costume to see how he pulls it off.

There's an article out there where Snyder's wife mentioned a lot of work that her husband was doing for the Man of Steel blu-ray. Even if I"m not crazy about the film, I'm definitely looking forward to all the extras stuff on this disc.

Cold light of day is horrible beyond words. But he is GOOD in it.

The screen test and the bruce timm cartoon. I don't need deleted scenes as I desperately want a longer cut.

I've always said (despite my criticims of the movie) that a half hour more could significantly change and improve MOS.
What gets me is that Snyder was willing (and wanting) to go back to the editing room twice for Watchmen, he had an extended cut for the poor Sucker Punch, but isn't interested in a longer version of MOS? *sigh*

Reeve is still to this date, the all round best comic book lead ever.
But as others say, Reeve's script allowed him to show a lot more than Cavill did. Cavill is easily the best since Reeve, but we'll hopefully see him demonstrate his abilities further in a sequel.
Russ, good point. Reeve's actually quite poor in those Brando scenes, but in terms of whats official and what was put up on screen in the theatrical versions, he's near perfect.

My opinion is Cav just hasn't yet reached his potential. How can he when MoS offered very little for him to do in terms of acting? I still have high hopes for the chap. Bring on MoS 2

It's the same problem Routh had. Cavills a more experienced actor but beyond acting serious lost and occasionally angry how much range did either one get to have as Superman or the real Clark? At least Routh had the Clark Kent reporter act to break up the overly serious monotony.
Reeve on the other hand was allowed to make lasting first impressions as Clark and a Superman. In the helicopter rescue scene he owns it. I don't think he even says that much but he got to show a lot more personality. The smile he gives when he turns and walks away but before Lois asks who he is did a lot. More than words maybe
Cain's not anywhere near the top of the list but even the Lois & Clark pilot let him do more in terms of having a personality. MOS is heavy on the the characters doing stuff but some of the characters tend to have no personality. Amy Adams Lois was always doing something but how much of a personify did she get to actually display? Coates Kidder and Hatcher weren't always very pro active compared to Adams but we got to learn what those Lois were as people. We saw some character and personality.

Cavill didn't portray Clark and Superman as two different personas. Even in costume, he's still "Clark".

Cavill's Superman isn't really the traditional Superman until he's talking with the general at the very end of the film. Before that he's Clark, or Kal-el, the alien who everyone is uncertain over.
