The re-release of the Dark Knight trilogy has some new special features including a retrospective conversation between Donner and Nolan.
Has anyone watched this? I already own the previous set and won't be purchasing it again.

Haven't seen it (the trilogy has such weak extras that one would think that WB should be embarrassed to charge as much as they are)- but the Donner/Nolan conversation would have been the main reason to pick this up. A rough scan of reviews say that it's pretty fluffy. Nothing too in-depth, unfortunately... but hopefully it'll appear on the net for free eventually...

Is this just a UK thing? I thought over here the trilogy set was just the three solo releases repackaged.

I ain't gonna buy these movies again but I hope this extra gets out there somehow. Even if it's a softball kind of sit down it should still be interesting.

I secretly hope every day at my job to see Richard Donner walk through that door. I will flip the fuck out.

I secretly hope every day at my job to see Richard Donner walk through that door. I will flip the fuck out. My friend went years ago for a signing of the STM lazerdisc, and he doesn't usually get tongue-tied, but he told me he just about froze up when he stood in line for the signing by Donner and Mank. Had a chance (dammit!) to see BOTH Donner and Singer together at Comicon years ago, but my day job prevented it. Who knew it would be such a rare event and who knew that NOBODY on the internet seems to have taped this event. *sigh*

If anyone is able to upload even just an audio file of the conversation it sounds like it could be interesting.

The full interview is up on youtube. There's nothing new from Donner but it's nice to see the respect that Nolan has for Superman the Movie. Also, what he has to say about using CGI as a tool to enhance practical effects is right on the mark.

I would love to see this conversation. There's a teaser version of it where Nolan clearly shows he is a big fan of STM -- I wonder if he visited Superman CINEMA in the old days?
I'd love to meet Donner, but I'm not sure if I have anything left to say. Probably just say thanks.
Meeting Mankiewicz was certainly a highlight for me. Being in his company was unreal, brilliant mind. I felt so small.

Not necessarily sure about the first one - making movies is a collaborative effort. The producers and Donner signed off on it. Emotions trump logic in a movie. I don't think S2 counts because it's just a curiosity more than anything.

Not once but twice? Wasn't it Puzo's idea? I know (oddly) that the Puzo draft never was found (probably in a crate in a warehouse in Washington next to the Ark of the Covenant)- but didn't drafts of SII prior to Mank have that as the original ending?

It's not in the Newman versions of 1 or 2.

It's not in the Newman versions of 1 or 2. But.... were these drafts prior to STM using the time-reversal ending intended for SII? Did Lois die in any SII drafts out there? I always thought that she originally was set to die in the FOS, and that's where/why Superman changes history at that point....

Lois never dies in any of the scripts that I've read prior to the late revisions by Mank. The time reversal was done last minute and I believe it was initiated by Lester - he said that there was no emotional content in the Earthquake sequence hence Donner and Mank, and maybe even Ilya, adding that stuff in.

Wonder why the emphasis on "Forbidden to interfere with..." if there was not going to be a payoff?
Well, it was going to be a payoff with him unwittingly freeing Zod.

I've downloaded the full interview as an audio file. If anyone is interested send me a PM and perhaps I can email it to you. The file is 22MB but I could decrease the bitrate so to lower the file size.
