Earlier today, Matt Reeves hinted that THE BATMAN was looking at a 2021 release date. "We haven’t been dated. I wouldn’t commit to this, but we’re thinking the movie would probably be for 2021, late spring or summer," Reeves said. "Warner Bros. has been incredibly supportive and given me a lot of time and shared the same passion that I do for this story." It didn't take long for this date to be confirmed as Warner Bros. have announced the release dates for not only THE BATMAN, but also for THE SUICIDE SQUAD and DC SUPER PETS. Here's the goods:

THE BATMAN will hit theaters on June 25, 2021, followed by THE SUICIDE SQUAD on August 6, 2021, but before we get to either of those much-anticipated films, DC SUPER PETS will be hitting theaters on May 21, 2021. According to Deadline, who first broke the news of THE BATMAN release date, it seems that Ben Affleck will not be returning to play the title role, something which has been expected for quite some time. In a Tweet, Affleck stated, "Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @mattreevesla vision come to life." Variety added that Matt Reeves will soon begin meeting with actors for the Batman role, but no details have been revealed in regards to whether or not the character will be a younger or older incarnation. One thing that's certain however is that Reeves' take on the Dark Knight will finally do justice to the character's description as the World's Greatest Detective.

It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.

As for THE SUICIDE SQUAD, the sequel to David Ayer's film will be penned by James Gunn, who Warner Bros. was quick to scoop up as soon as his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe was confirmed. There's no director slated for THE SUICIDE SQUAD at the moment, but when Gunn's hiring was first announced, it was mentioned that he may step into the director's chair as well. (Update: THR has now reported that James Gunn will officially direct THE SUICIDE SQUAD, so there you have it.) DC SUPER PETS will revolve around the various super-powered animals of DC heroes and was announced last August. Jared Stern and Sam Levine will direct the film.

So that will place its release about four years after Affleck’s last appearance as Batman in JL. About the same amount of time between Bales last appearance as Batman and Affleck’s first. Sounds about right as more proof that this will be a reboot. I’m fine with that. More time would be better but I’m also ready for something new and I don’t mean a prequel. I mean a clean break from Snyder.

Suicide Squad....it’s so bad that WB basically salted the earth with that last f*ckin one. I love most of that lineup of the team from the comics but most of those versions of the characters just didn’t appeal to me because of the way they were executed and I’d have a hard time just forgetting that. I have no interest in seeing someone else try Juggalo Joker again. I hope Gunn gets to do totally new take. Even if it’s not new characters I want new actors, new designs, and a new story. If they want to say it’s a sequel fine but make it it’s own thing.

With all the start/stops, and the now EXTREMELY confusing Justice League connections (if they choose to do a sequel with the original characters and not the same actors--- or even worse, reboot)- I've been saying this forever: just write Christian Bale a big fat check and figure out a way to meld it with the continuity (if possible) of the Nolan films for Batman. Suicide Squad has little interest for me, outside of James Gunn directing it. DC Super pets could be fun or a disaster, depending on the script/direction they take.

Ya just know Super Pets is their response to Into The Spider-verse the same way Suicide Squad was their response to GOTG and Deadpool. If they ever did bring Bale back as Batman it’d be as a stand alone project and that would be the right call. The dceu is so uneven that there’s no way Nolan would want to tie to that. The signature series films or black label films or whatever they’re calling the side line of stand alone movies that Joker is a part of would be a good place to do it.

Months of radio silence on Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” film was broken last week as the filmmaker discussed the project’s noir detective-centric tone, while the studio lined up a Summer 2021 release date, and Ben Affleck officially bowed out as the Caped Crusader.

Now Heat Vision has a follow-up report offering a couple of additional details. First up, the initial script for the film reportedly clocked in at a thick 160 pages, though that’s expected to be cut down as revisions on the film take place (a standard script is around 100-120 pages). They also discuss the recasting of the role:

“In terms of who will play the next Batman, a lot of mixed messages of how old the actor will be going around town. Some have said Reeves had wanted a younger person in their 20s, others have said the studio would prefer an older actor in their 30s. Let the guessing games begin… Hearing studio wants a familiar face and Reeves has his certain age in mind and that age is very specific like I said two names within 7 years of each other – the response: ‘too young, too old.'”

Reeves said earlier this week that the casting process will begin shortly. Additionally, the “Batman Beyond” rumor which sprang up earlier this week has been shot down by multiple sources at Warners reports Umberto Gonzalez.

It’s going to be an interesting year. If I were Reeves I’d cast someone around 30ish. Maybe a little older. Reeves is doing a story about an established Batman. Not about a veteran but it’s not an origin story either. 30 gives time for an actor to do several films.

To be honest, the detective work is the least interesting thing to me about Batman. Bale! Bring back BBBBBale!

To me that’s his greatest power. His mind. It’s what sets him apart from guys like Punisher (besides...yknow...shooting people to death). We’ve never really seen it. Saw a little in Batman Begins and Batman Returns and arguably BvS but that’s it. We saw him do some forensics and ballistic work in other films but we’ve never really seen him go around unrevelling a mystery or solving a case with some hard work. They usually go for action and this is one way Reeves could set his film apart.

I'm open to it, but I think my disappointment comes from the riches of STM and the first two Nolan Batman films- where it felt like a 'history channel' documentary of sorts of the biggest highlights of these fictional heroes.

Also, Batman has the most interesting rogues' gallery of all the comics. I don't think that they necessarily need or deserve their own movie (like Joker), but I do think not focusing on them is like leaving creative money on the table if the emphasis is the detective work.

Still, I'm curious....

Well you can still get that with a detective oriented Batman movie. If anything it could be more of documentary kind of documentary day in the life of type of film.

I think we will also see Batman’s rogues gallery. Detective story doesn’t mean he’s gonna deal with all normal criminals. If anything depending on the story we could see more of his rogues gallery than ever in one movie. If it’s some kind of whodunnit Batman’s rogues gallery makes for a huge number of suspects. The rumor is Arkham asylum might have something to do with the story so there’s more fuel for the speculation fire.

The psychological angle mixed in with the superheroics always fascinated me. If they approach it like ‘Hannibal’ the tv show, i could be more drawn in. Would also be fascinated if they go for an ‘R’ rating!

RIght--- I also would want an R only for the right creative reasons. But, it would definitely wake people up to the idea that they were going for something different. I definitely give Fox credit for the 'R' rating for Logan.

If they had the right project I’d be fine with it. It sounds like Joker should be R rated.

Of course doing it so late with a major character like a Batman just looks like them trying to copy what Fox has done. Suicide Squad already looked very reactionary to what other studios were doing instead of it being their own good idea.

That was hilarious- and a touch sad, as you get the feeling that Affleck's heart was REALLY in the right place for Batman.

When he chose to sniff the Liberace thong, I just laughed out loud. Who can hate a guy who can have a sense of humor about himself like this?

He’s claiming him not being able to come up with a story that worked is the reason he’s leaving even though I don’t think he’s entirely telling the truth. He’s just being a good soldier on this one. He’s been out long before now and I think the cause was him feeling burned by BvS as well as butting heads with WB on the Batman. I think he was happy with his script but they weren’t. They wanted one movie and he wanted another.

Well, I think also he's working out personal problems far beyond the movies, too--- so hopefully he finds the right way to get those issues solved. When he says a story that worked- I wonder if that's also code for a script that makes the studio happy as well as what he think is good.

Again, who knows what the chatter is behind WB doors.... sad that we can only speculate...

“Batman vs. Ninja Turtles” Animated Film Revealed

Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Entertainment are collaborating together with DC Entertainment and Nickelodeon for the brand new animated film “Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.

The project will be based off James Tynion IV and Freddie William II’s comics miniseries combining the two franchises. The story follows the turtles meeting Batman for the first time via a transdimensional encounter, and they all team up to face Batman’s deadly rogues gallery.

The voice cast will reportedly include Troy Baker as both Batman and The Joker, Tara Strong as both Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, Darren Criss as Raphael, Kyle Mooney as Michelangelo, Baron Vaughn as Donatello, Eric Bauza as Leonardo, Rachel Bloom as Batgirl, John DiMaggio as Mr. Freeze, Tom Kenny as The Penguin, Cas Anvar as Ra’s al Ghul and Carlos Alazraqui as Bane.

The animated film is expected to be released sometime this spring on 4K, Blu-ray and Digital.

I grew up a fan of both and I’m sure they’ll go for something fun but I can think of team-up movies I’d like to see from both properties before I’d like to see them cross over with each other. It’s not surprising from a brand popularity perspective that this is finally happening on screen but I’m not sure it’s a ever going to be a good fit.

If this had to happen I wish it could have been with established versions that were good fits like the 87 animated Turtles and the Superfriends/Superpowers team... or the DCAU Batman from Justice League and the 03 animated turtles. But I’m assuming these will be all new stand alone versions that were designed to fit together

I’m guessing they’re going for a more fun Batman to make this work. That’s why he’s got the blue and gray suit with the yellow oval. That’s pretty much classic Batman.

Last week came a report that Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn character would not be returning for James Gunn’s in the works “The Suicide Squad” with that film serving as something of a minor reboot as much as a sequel to 2016’s “Suicide Squad” in which Robbie debuted as the character.

Robbie is currently reprising the role, filming the upcoming girl gang film “Birds of Prey,” and the Forbes report indicated that she wasn’t up for any other DC projects at this time – including “Gotham City Sirens” or a “Joker and Harley” movie. Now the report has been amended with Robbie potentially returning for the ‘Squad’ follow-up, saying:

“I have learned from sources close to production that in fact, the information about Harley Quinn being absent from the new Suicide Squad movie is no longer up to date – she is indeed expected to appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is expected to begin production later this year.”

Gunn is taking over from David Ayer who helmed the first one. The “Birds of Prey” movie hits cinemas early 2020 with “The Suicide Squad” coming August 2021.

From a Creative standpoint I was fine with Robbie not being in the movie at all. She was one of the best parts of the movie but logically Harley’s involvement in the first film really made no sense unless Joker was the threat they had to deal with.

She’s a crazy broad with a baseball bat. What does she bring to the team besides tits, ass, and MAYBE some unpredictable ideas and suggestions? At least the rest of them were hitmen, thieves, and monsters that brought more to the table for the kind of missions they were going on. She didn’t believably contribute as a physical threat. There was a way to make Harley relevant by playing up her experience as a psychiatrist and drawing on her expertise in certain situations when dealing with people but they didn’t even do that.

From a marketing/popularity stand point it makes perfect sense to bring her back. I just hope they figure out a way to better integrate her into the story and make her necessary beyond hot funny crazy chick.

I agree. But the popularity of Robbie's Harley Quinn blew me away. I can't go to a convention without seeing someone dress up like her.
My expectations for the film are low. I just want to see that gal from Scott Pilgrim in the original Huntress costume kicking butt and my geek is satisfied.

She’s an easy and realistic thus popular costume choice. Hot topic Harley. Women probably find it more appealing than the jester outfit and more comfortable than the S&M leather and corset get up.

I hope they make MEW look great. Not sure if she’s right for the role but I’ll love her anyway cause I always do. I think she might have been a better fit for the Helena Wayne version actually.

Will Smith Departs “Suicide Squad” Sequel

Will Smith has departed James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” the upcoming sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 DC Comics adaptation “Suicide Squad” in which Smith played the key role of Deadshot.

Variety reports that Smith’s return for the film had never been made official, though it was previously indicated the studio wanted both Smith and Margot Robbie to return for the sequel.

The report suggests Smith’s departure was amicable, and ultimately it came down to his busy schedule preventing him from returning as ‘Squad’ aims to begin production before the end of the year.

It’s not clear if Deadshot will be recast or the character will simply sit out the film. It has been indicated Gunn’s new take will serve as something of a ‘soft reboot’ featuring a mostly new cast of characters so it’s not clear if any actors from the previous film will return.

“The Suicide Squad” is slated for an August 6th 2021 release. Robbie is reprising her role of Harley Quinn in the currently filming “Birds of Prey” with some new photos accessible through the link below.

Guess he didn’t wanna get jiggy wit it. No big loss. If they don’t just recast the role I’d swap out Deadshot for Deathstroke.

Hey everyone,

long time no post for me.....I actually sort of liked what they have been doing up until Justice League but dear god.....they are trying to cram storylines together too much, barely giving characters development before team-ups, and while I can't wait for Shazam and Wonder Woman 1984, did we really need a Suicide Squad 2, Birds of Prey, or Joker movie (dear god i don't know WHAT to think of that apparent trainwreck) while the actual main characters haven't even all had their own time to shine in their own movies? No Flash movie filming yet, No Green Lantern (feel like I'm doing Steppenwolf's Justice League Lines) Batman is still years away and we don't even have an actor yet, Superman is a toss up and with so many rumors abound do we STILL have Cavill or not?!? it's just a mess and I just wish they could figure out a Fiege-person to really spearhead all of this, write Flashpoint for Flash's movie and soft reboot a coherent storyline to move forward with ALL Primary DC figures first before going to their "Justice League International" rosters

I agree. Even though I didn’t like most of that they did before JL and felt they crammed too much into BvS I also wish they would concentrate on getting what they have in order and just focus on what’s already on the slate instead of adding to it. Flash has been one long colossal mess.

BEN AFFLECK TALKS GIVING UP THE CAPE AND COWL AS DC'S BATMAN

Not long ago, but after waffling more than a truck stop waitress, Ben Affleck officially retired as Batman for the DCEU. For a time, Affleck was expected to write and direct a solo Batman film, though that torch has since been passed to WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES helmer Matt Reeves. With the search for a new Dark Knight now underway, some Batfleck fans have remained perplexed as to why the JUSTICE LEAGUE actor finally called it quits.

According to a special live round table interview for TRIPLE FRONTIER with IGN's Max Scoville, Affleck admits that much of his decision to leave was based on his not being satisfied with the film's script. He told Scoville as much when he said, "That was part of the problem," Affleck confessed. "We worked on the script, I was trying to figure out how to crack it, and I was never happy enough with it where I thought it was worth going out and making it because I just didn't want to do a version that I wasn't really excited by, so I still don't know."

To be honest, I don't know a single person who would want Affleck to contribute to a project that he isn't 100% excited for, so perhaps him retiring as the World's Greatest Detective is for the best? After all, Affleck's indecision about continuing on as the character had been going on for quite sometime. In fact, he'd been sketchy about the whole thing all the way back to June of last year when he'd said, "I don’t have a script that’s ready yet. My timetable is I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good because I’ve been on the end of the things when you make movies when you have a script that’s not good yet and it doesn’t pan out." He then continued, "I have a script, we’re still working on it, and I’m not happy enough with it yet to actually go out there and make a Batman movie, for which I have the highest of standards, I would say. That’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me. It’s not just like, 'Yeah, that might be fun, let’s go try this out.'"

I for one am looking forward to a new actor emerging as DC's Big Bad Bat, though I understand that not everyone shares my enthusiasm. Reports have indicated that Reeves is still on the hunt for his Bruce Wayne/Batman, with the goal of welcoming a younger actor into the role. For a hot minute, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME actor Armie Hammer was reportedly cast for the part, though in time that rumor turned out to be nothing more than a steaming pile of bat guano.

Meanwhile, Affleck is set to star alongside Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Garrett Hedlund and Charlie Hunnam in director J.C. Chandor's TRIPLE FRONTIER. The upcoming film revolves around five former Special Forces operatives who reunite to plan a heist in a sparsely populated multi-border zone of South America. For the first time in their prestigious careers these unsung heroes undertake this dangerous mission for self instead of country. But when events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control, their skills, their loyalties and their morals are pushed to a breaking point in an epic battle for survival. The film will make its Netflix premiere on March 13th.

In other words WB wanted something else he didn’t want and the two sides couldn’t agree. I do believe what he’s saying about time and taking the time to make it right. But the thing is...they’ve given Reeves more than enough time. He came on board The Batman two years ago and it’s still years away. WB probably would have given Affleck time (to a point) if both sides had been thrilled with what was being done. It wasn’t just the pressure of a rush job there was some kind of creative fracture behind the scenes.
