Storywise, it actually looks pretty good! The focus on 'darkness' isn't an empty heartless approach when it deals with family struggles. If the drama is done correctly (I thought it was all over the place in Smallville- sometimes fantastic, sometimes utterly ridiculous) this could be a good show. Not my 'canon'- 'go to' Superman live action, but if the stories are strong enough, a good alternate version.... though one thing I hope is that there aren't boring supporting characters one has to endure (here's looking at you, Arrow and Supergirl). |

They have a few classic looking Superman moments in the last few trailers but what really interests me is how the concept is doing something new. We get to see Clark Kent deal with some stress and worries we’ve never see him take on before.
Lois & Clark and Superman Returns took the baby steps on exploring Superman as a father and family man but this takes it far beyond anything else we’ve seen on screen. They’re not afraid to evolve the status quo.
I really liked Jordan’s reaction and how Clark handles telling his sons his secret. Will Jordan go down the stereotypical troubled son route or will Jonathan be the one that surprises us somehow. I’d like to see them do the opposite of what we expect.

Seems like the focus will be on the family in this one. In most of the other shows that wasn’t really an option. It was all about the relationship stuff and will they or won’t they get together. The supporting characters in this like Sam Lane are little bit more interesting too. It feels like it’s also paying off the potential that was there when Smallville ended. It’s almost ten years later so in a way we get to see Superman back on the CW living a life that Wellings Clark might have lived. In crisis he and Lois were also married and with kids. A Superman & Lois/Smallville crossover is pretty tempting down the road. Another big hope is that Jon Cryer carries over from Supergirl after that show ends. We’ve never really gotten to see Hoechlin and Cryer square off. Reminds me of Affeck and Leto in the dceu. The encounters were so brief in both cases that we never got a sense of that chemistry. Cryers spent more time playing opposite Welling and even Routh which is bizarre. |

Cryer seems to be a keeper as Lex- While the family aspect seems interesting, so did Flash's first season engage while it was on his family.... but once it told its story, it felt a bit lost and draggy.... hopefully this show has solid places to go... |

I wonder if that aspect is overdone for the same reason some shows have 'flashback episodes'--- to save money for other episodes in a season's budget. That would be sad. I don't mind if there's some of that in a scifi or superhero show, but a show based on comics can be far more than just action or romance--- which is one reason (among others) that I'm really digging Wandavision under Kevin Feige's guidance. The Berliantiverse is definitely light years ahead of most of the bad Netflix Marvel series- and I enjoy a chunk of them- but it hasn't gotten to a point where I feel like it's deep enough to be worthy enough to be Emmy nominated or win a Peabody Award. But.... hopefully that changes in the near future... |

Superman and Lois aired tonight. A quick montage covers all the early origin stuff. It opens with us seeing baby Kal-El. We see Jonathan Kent’s death. Clark first getting a job as a reporter and meeting Lois. Clark proposing. Them getting married. Lots of super rescues. They even put Tyler Hoechlin in a classic 1940s style Fleischer costume for the flashback to his early days as Superman. That was a real surprise that I never thought I’d see.
They put a lot of money into this pilot. At times it looks pretty cinematic. Superman stopping a nuclear meltdown and freezing tons of ocean water to cool the reactor was a nice callback to Superman 3. Clark loses his job at the Planet after Morgan Edge bought it. Little bit of the 70s comic influence there except back then Edge made Clark a tv news anchor.
So far I think this has been the best first episode for a Superman related tv show ever. The premise really does feel like it’s paying off a lot of the stuff Lois & Clark and Smallville set up with Superman being around so long and Lois and Clark being married. If they can keep up this kind of quality for the rest of the series this will be a good show.

Just finished viewing the pilot...
Hm...
First off, production wise, Metallo, I agree with you 1000% on the production values. This looks like one of the most expensive pilots I've seen in a long time....
I loved loved the beginning montage and the first half of the show, but the last 15-20 minutes kind of lost me. I don't want to give spoilers, but when the cat comes out of the bag towards the end, I was expecting much bigger emotional fireworks and the buildup really felt softened to me.
It is interesting how they took bits and pieces of different Superman versions here and there.... I'm curious how the next few episodes play out, but I do admit that most of the pilot grabbed me--- but overall by the end, if comparing both pilots, I do think the pilot for Smallville worked stronger by the end.
Still, willing to try out the regular episodes.

I thought the overall aesthetic was mimicking MoS. The flying effects, and even the look of Smallville were very similar.
I did spot the "frozen water" idea from S3 being reused for the nuclear plant.
I'll definitely watch the next few episodes.

I watched the pilot. I enjoyed it. Obviously not in the same league as STM, but it's a fun, interesting modern take. I thought the overall aesthetic was mimicking MoS. The flying effects, and even the look of Smallville were very similar. I did spot the "frozen water" idea from S3 being reused for the nuclear plant. I'll definitely watch the next few episodes. Personally I think it was what MOS was going for done right. It’s got a similar aesthetic but they’re also drawing from previous versions as well. Unlike Snyder they were smart enough to introduce some color to those big sweeping set pieces at the right times. It really looked like the perfect visual middle ground between Superman Returns and Man of Steel. The shot of Superman and Lois above the clouds after they got engaged reminded me of the shot of Rouths Superman from Returns flying above the clouds to get to the sun. The scenes of Superman fighting the armored villain above earth and around the world reminded me of Superman IV but once again done right. The scene of Superman hovering in space also reminded me of a similar shot in Superman Returns. Superman falling back to earth after getting stabbed was also right out of Returns. |

Even though there was no confirmation that Superman existed on the old pre crisis Arrowverse version of Earth 2 it would be cool if this armored “captain” Luthor was a survivor of Earth 2 the way the comic book version of Alexander Luthor was a survivor of earth 3. I get the impression that his Superman was evil. In the Arrowverse many of the heroes of earth one were villains on earth 2 so it would fit. There’s a theory going around Morgan Edge wants all the farms in Smallville because he knows something extra terrestrial crashed there and he wants to find it. The it being Clark’s starship. |

Well you folks are going to be my informants with regards to the quality of this show- lol!- as by living in the UK I am prohibited from signing on to watch this stuff(and I personally don't like using VPNs). When I go on the CW website I get: Due to licensing restrictions this content is only available in the U.S.Still , I have seen the youtube trailers and whatnot and my interest has been piqued  In the meantime.....back to the Dragon's Challenge! |
