Well you folks are going to be my informants with regards to the quality of this show- lol!- as by living in the UK I am prohibited from signing on to watch this stuff(and I personally don't like using VPNs). When I go on the CW website I get: Due to licensing restrictions this content is only available in the U.S.Still , I have seen the youtube trailers and whatnot and my interest has been piqued In the meantime.....back to the Dragon's Challenge! That's terrible! ok... will be careful with spoilers for now... hopefully you can get it soon, though!

One minor quibble.... would it have killed Hoechlin to SHAVE for the part? At least for flashbacks?

Just watched it and I enjoyed it more than I would have expected. It was nice to get a bunch of stuff we've covered in other series out the way right off the bat. I liked the old Action Comics reference and if that had been the new suit I'd be happy. The new inflated look is a bit ridiculous and I can't help but keep imagining how hideous Superman would look shirtless if what we see in the suit is representative of his actual anatomy. Lots of Superman Movie references. Dr Donner on the white board behind Clark in the beginning, a mention of Doc Fry in Smallville, the lake freeze. Lots of similar looking shots and angles too, the Superman Returns kryptonite continent lift came to mind during the lifting of the ice block, Superman flying low over the water, some MOS looking stuff too. I also thought that the evil captain guy sounded like one of his first lines of dialogue was read by Brandon Routh, I could be wrong but the voice kept on changing and one line stood out as sounding like him.
I stopped watching all of the CW shows a long time ago as they all got pretty terrible and I decided it wasn't worth the time each week to keep up to date with them. I came back for Crisis and that was pretty disappointing. This felt like a step in a much better direction and I'll keep watching to see where it goes. Hopefully it doesn't have a rapid decline like Arrow and Flash. And would it hurt to have a slow landing or take-off? Too many digital doubles zipping in and out of frame. I get it in a fight situation, but he really doesn't need to slam into the ground at Super speed or fly away at mach 5 when he's just stopping to chat.

I also hate those slamming into the ground landings. And the blast off effects whem taking off. The takeoffs and landings in STM, S2 and S3 were just amazing. S3 really perfected that.

One minor quibble.... would it have killed Hoechlin to SHAVE for the part? At least for flashbacks? I think he did shave especially for the flashbacks. Hoechlin looks to have a pretty heavy five o clock shadow like Routh though. I think they wanted Clark to intentionally look pretty worn down because of all the drama going on in his life right now so they let him have some stubble. General Lane even said he’d been putting in a lot of OT lately. It may have also been inspired by Rebirth when Superman had a beard. I caught the name Doc Frye (another STM reference) but am I the only one who noticed who played Martha’s doctor? I’d swear that was Gates McFadden (Dr Crusher from Star Trek TNG).

It’s interesting how the last three shows about Clark and Lois (Lois & Clark, Smallville, and Superman & Lois) cover three different periods in Superman’s life that compliment one another. There’s some overlap but you could line them up in a row by timeframe and they almost feel like a sort of unofficial trilogy. They all have a strong focus on relationship drama even though tonally L&C is lighter.
Smallville deals with his formative years and him eventually becoming Superman. Lois & Clark deals with his early years as Superman, working at the Planet, and marrying Lois. Superman & Lois deals with his life as a family man, his post journalism career, and being a veteran superhero. Like I said there’s some overlap and some inconsistencies (Jonathan Kent being alive or dead, when he starts at the Daily Planet, the way he meets Lex Luthor, and other minor things) but if you watched them in order you’d get a good broad sense of Superman’s life up until he’s around 40.
Superman and Lois really does feel like an unofficial sequel series to the other two in some ways especially Smallville.

Next time we get a new Supes he’s going to talk about watching Smallville or Superman Returns as a young child! Grant Gustin talking about getting his drivers license shortly before seeing Superman Returns for the first time already blows my mind.

I could understand if they were children or teens but anyone over 30 should and least have some idea who he was. Younger that really. It’s not like he wasn’t in movies that people still enjoy now like Last Crusade. He should be known by a lot of younger people for that alone.

Years ago, when teaching high school, some of the kids there REALLY loved "Smallville" and Tom Welling was 'their' Superman... but in thinking on it-
That's 10 years of episodes.
With Chris Reeve, he's got 4 movies.... that we love, but what gets more rotation I wonder?
In other words, in the long run, will Welling be more remembered via amount of hours of media?
Guess it's impossible to know...

Guess it's impossible to know... It’s hard to say. Especially now with young kids. Smallville had more episodes but it was on smaller networks and even that was ten years ago. Meanwhile the movies are fewer but had a lot more mainstream exposure on the big screen, network tv, cable, etc. Movies are easier to watch and take up less time which is a plus for a generation with a shorter attention span. What Smallville has in its favor with them is its newer and they can relate to it a little more compared to old films. Smallville came along at the worst time when it comes to reruns though. I rarely ever saw it rerun anywhere compared to past shows. I think it got a bit of time on TNT but not like Lois & Clark did. It did well on dvd so most people bought those and that’s what WB wanted. Then it went to streaming. Compare it to Lois & Clark which went directly into reruns on cable tv and stayed there for years. Even the Arrowverse shows are on Netflix which has more eyeballs on it than HBOMax right now. Any younger kids who want to watch any of this stuff now are probably going to do it on streaming services and that’s all behind a paywall. The world and how it’s all consumed has changed so much that my answer even ten years ago would have been different. I’d say with younger people Welling will be more remembered but it’s not going to last as long as there is so much more competition. The further we get away from it that group of fans is going to age and I’m not sure it will continue to bring in as many new fans as shows and movies of the past did for a lot of reasons. It’s the same way no new Star Trek show is ever going to bring in as many new fans as TOS did in syndicated reruns or TNG did in first run syndication. The entire model has changed so much.

Good points. As an example, we may want 'our' movie Superman to be the one that lasts for the ages- but the Superman movies we saw were not all fashioned as a fantastic trilogy like Lord of the Rings or offer a whole new universe like Star Wars did. Instead, whether fair or not- Superman movies will be in the future compared to other superhero movies that came after.... personally I think STM if discovered 'new' years from now will still be moving for the ambition, the music, the cinematography, emotion, and the perfectionism--- (SII could have, if it kept the same director)- but the others maybe not so much.

One thing I can say is most of the DC movies now won’t be as well remembered or revered as the old ones. They came out at a time when these things are everywhere and being released all the time. They aren’t as special anymore and they’re being overshadowed by Marvel.
At best the ones like MOS BVS and JL be remembered for their controversy. The exceptions will be the Dark Knight films and maybe Wonder Woman and Joker.

I love Superman For All Seasons so I’m disappointed I didn’t even catch this when the pilot premiered.

Loved seeing him in the classic costume. WOuld be nice to see flashbacks with him in it.
On another note: Is or isn't Jon Cryer able to be Luthor and is Supergirl considered on the same earth- has anyone heard?

On another note: Is or isn't Jon Cryer able to be Luthor and is Supergirl considered on the same earth- has anyone heard? He CAN be Luthor again (and if I had to guess I think we will eventually see him on the show) but it’s not clear if they’ll use him as Luthor on their show any time soon. Part of it is the probably Covid restrictions but I think it’s mostly because they want to establish their own “Luthor” big bad first. I wouldn’t expect to see Cryer on the show at all this season. I hope I’m wrong though...at least as far as the long term. After Supergirl ends it would free Cryer up much more to appear on Superman & Lois as well. It would be a real missed opportunity if they never use him. He and Hoechlin have been in the same scenes a couple of times but their characters interactions have been almost nil. They haven’t really worked together. It would be a shame if they never did because they should have at least one big face off like all the Lexs and Supermen have. Makes me think of the similar situation between Ben Affleck and Jared Leto in the DCEU. They’d never really had a great back and fourth together despite being in the same movie. Now thats being changed with the Snyder cut.

Episode 2 behind the scenes photo. That first video is very similar to the various Superman vs Zod fights in MoS. I still think the effects in STM and S2 were better and more graceful and realistic. This feels too much like a video game. But having said that, I am not watching the show for the effects. I'm interested to see where it goes with the human (superhuman) drama.

I think they’re just going for something more modern. Plus more digital work probably helps them shoot faster in some instances. Like I said before this feels like MOS done right. Modern but still keeping some of the classic Superman feel and doing stronger storytelling. Snyder is all visuals.
I thought the evil Superman shown here was far more intriguing than the evil or black suit stuff Snyder keeps trying to push because it’s straightforward. It’s not a nightmare or vision of the future but something that did really happen. Feels like they want to dip into the Injustice/Justice Lord well but do a better job exploring it than Snyder ever did. Best of all it’s not being glorified as something cool. I always got the sense that Snyder wants to do a dark villainous Superman flat out.

Pretty interesting experiment. I liked Superman’s previous theme so I was disappointed to see it go.

I only saw the pilot- but I already don't remember the opening music.
For the title credits music for Supergirl and Flash, though--- Wow, I LOVE(D) those! And very memorable!
