I did one for Superman II that I never really finished. It was basically the ABC Cut + Brando - slapstick. I'm gonna redo it in HD. Where did you get the ABC cut scenes from? I can't even remember specificically what the ABC cut had that was different. /me goes off and reads supermancinema website* I couldn't get everything for the ABC cut, not in widescreen anyway. I tried to make a good approximation, so that meant cannibalizing all the DVD deleted scenes (including Souffle), the Donner Cut, the footage of Non killing the boy, and some audio from the RIC. Close enough to the ABC cut.

I was just reading up on the ABC cut, and it sounds like the best cut that ever existed for SII. Shame it only appears to exist in its entirety from VHS sources.

Surely the RIC is/was the best ever cut of Superman II

Surely the RIC is/was the best ever cut of Superman II Stupid stuff that the RIC has and ABC cut does not: 1) 30 second shot of random photographer putting film into his camera 2) Japanese girl watching TV, and her father shouting about too much violence on TV 3) Rednecks complaining that the news coverage has interrupted their shows ABC cut wins.

Is that the only 3 scenes that are missing in the ABC cut?
I could live with that.
Although that "shut up Dad" line cracks me up every time for some strange reason.

Yeah the ABC version is definitely my favorite. (I haven't seen it in years but I think it gets Lex into the fortress faster than the international?)

Jim, is your edit of SII available anywhere? I am curious to see an edit that closely resembles the ABC cut.

I think I gave it to a couple people, but I never really gave it the finishing polish. I think I'll restart with the Blu-rays, upscaling the deleted scenes.

Lol I love how in the description they mention all the "spectacular" feats Superman performs in this film. Like "rebuilding the great Wall of China" lol. Forget about the obvious, and how these acts of heroism are all poorly done with horrible special effects. How about the fact that all these things happen in a time frame of 5 minutes? Sure doesn't make for a "grand" picture when all the feats happen one after the other. If that was the case, in STM, the missiles would've launched after Superman saves Air Force One lol.
FWIW, if I was someone who collected real film on reels, I would buy this.

Tyler, you bring up an interesting thought: SIV is ragged on for its ridiculously bad execution of scenes, part of which is its cut budget. If you were responsible for SIV getting finished after the budget got cut to 2 cents..... what would you do? Shoot it anyways as much as you could with the script as is, or reduce the Nuclear Man fight from being a global fight to just being on the moon?

If SIV was getting cut finalcially why didn't they change the script. The shooting script should have been adapted to allow them to maximise the budget. The NM1 fight scene cost $6 million. That would have gone a LONG way in the movie elsewhere.
Where they hit with the budget cuts pre-movie, during shooting or post shooting (FX)?

I think it was mentioned on a Mike Matessino interview that the budget got slashed REALLY close to the start of shooting. Who knows if all the locations/ equipment was already paid for/setup and they couldn't change the shooting script that much by that point?
The fx supervisor actually said something similar to the effect that they wished that they could have focused on the fx that WERE going to be onscreen, rather than splitting resources.

WOW Jimbo. Great effort from someone who apparently hates this movie. Deep down you must like it really. Very impressed. What the fuck were they smoking when the wrote some of this? Lacey goes into Space not once but TWICE? ? Are Lacey and Jeremy non humans or something? Should there have been a line to explain WHY the can breathe in Space? Overall glad to see those extra scenes. Hadn't seen the tornado and Russian scene in a long time. How stupid was that tornado bit. Why and how could you forget a CHILD in a disater like that? Still wish the left it in the officail release. Glad to see the Nuclear man 1 scenes. Can't believe thats the same guy that used to be in CASULTY. I thought the bit with Lex withe vac was quite touching when he realises he cant get NM1 enough energy."Father. My boy". Overall I dont think the movie woulda done any better if it was fully released in 87 BUT at least it made a lot more sense. Glad to see Lacey had a final closure scene and that she buys Clarks farm (at least now it made some sense to have that bit at the beginning. Always thought it weird we see the Farm for sale and NEVER MENTIONED again in the entire film) Well done Jimbo. 10/10. This is the version I'll be watching from now on. I've already watched it 5 times since downloading it Friday. Even just leave it on background for the music and the "RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR! Destroy Superman" I look forward to your RIC cut of 2 and hopefully 3 if anyone ever finds the deleted scenes in widescreen.

If I recall right, the script didn't have NM & Lacey in space, but at a high altitude- setting it in space I'm sure made the fx easier to hide matte lines.
As far as Jeremy's trip into space, in interviews, the way Reeve described the moment of Supes bringing a child to a view where they could be overwhelmed by seeing the world as one, it sounded great- I'm sure Donner would have pulled it off perfectly. (*Something like this moment was done right in "The Right Stuff", with the astronauts orbiting earth)
The execution though.... not the best (budget aside, judging from Sydney Furie's 'hit' Iron Eagle, despite the heart in SIV, his work definitely lacked subtlety) Music and closeups would have gone much further. But the bad effects REALLY sunk this moment that seemed so much better on paper!

Trust me, I hate the movie. The only driving force was seeing how the movie looked in its complete form, and to see the movie with its full soundtrack restored.
Going over scene-by-scene repeatedly ate away my soul. By the end, I was almost desensitized to the liberal bullshit and poor filmmaking.

No mate good effort. If someone said to me to give time and effort to something I hated (Batman & Robin) I'd a gave up and trashed it burning it and then burning the evidence and then burning the ashes of the evidence before finally smoking it. The fact you did this means you are either brain dead or were smoking the same ganja the producers of this film did in 87.
Yeah, the scene with Jeremy ON PAPER the actual message is good but the execution and acting of the kid is really poor.
If they'd explained maybe Jeremy being in a spacesuit or Superman has some oxygen sheild around him to protect humans (a wee throwawy line woulda done the trick).

Getting ahold of the screenplay early - with envisioning the production budget in my head as being on the same level as STM/SII - I still had that enthusiasm going to the theatres and being glad that there was going to be ONE more try at the franchise with the original cast.... So- as much as I was disappointed by it- I hated the idea of SIII being the real end of it all, so, despite it's $2 budget--- I look at it as one big home movie Reeve might have made with his co-stars to try to get investors and try to imagine what the 'real' movie might have looked like, had it a good budget and a director like Donner at the helm. Having said that, there are times where the performances are just AWFUL though..... and goes below and beyond the $2 production values..... *sigh*

I felt that way initially with STM and Lois flying above the clouds without Lois freezing to death, but since they got away with it (I assume it's implied that there's some oxygen shield around him- although never mentioned. Thus, why he can talk in space, too) then, I have a feeling they thought the audience would give them a pass on Jeremy/Supes in space as well ..... but, the whole thing would have been more powerful (well, besides having good effects) in silence, I think, with everything read on the actors' faces & the right music.
SIV.... a fountain of missed creative opportunities.... *sigh*

Would be nice to just have a SIV cut in hd with just the tornado and russian nuke scenes back in. The problem is the only decent source for those 2 missing scenes is laserdisc, unless that can be upscaled to 720p using some avisynth script. I mean, it could work, the results of upscaling the original star wars laserdiscs to 720p using scripts has been pretty impressive over at originaltrilogy.com

Even then, the laserdisc source isn't perfect.
If someone using modern transfer technology gave it a shot, we might be able to get a better duplication of the laserdisc. As it is, the video I had at my disposal was cropped, blurry, and very interlaced. Just had to make do.

SIV was on RTE here in Ireland this weekend. It had the Tornado and Russian missile sequence BUT it was P&S and was poor quality.
I finally watched all the deleted scenes. I have to say, I honestly think that if the special effects, new FX and editing, SIV could be a pretty good movie. If I'd the money i'd go to WB, fund it myself and work on it to get what should be out there. I really enjoyed the NM turning into a missle scene.

There is a good movie in SIV somewhere. ;D
One thing I love about SIV is the music - it has the best music since STM in my opinion. I love all the expanded/new themes.
