The last episode was one of the best of the season. I like how Kara and Lenas relashionship is clearly drawing inspiration from the silver age Superboy and Lex friendship. This is obviously setting up one feeling betrayed by the other. They might reconcile for now but the seeds are being planted for mistrust and doubt in their friendship.
It was obvious the portal was leading to a Daxamite invasion of earth and since the Invasion! crossover with the Dominators the CW shows have shown they can successfully pull off something of that scale on tv budgets and limitations.
Finally I think this is the best episode and material Jimmy Olsens had in the whole series. He really got some substantial moments and time to shine as a character.
Very curious to see how former enemies become allies to fight the Daxamites and how Cadmus's anti alien stance and technology intersect with the current story. You just know that even though their experiments and actions were terrible they might just end up saving the world.

Metallo, I agree with everything you said. Finally James got something interesting to do. His story with the kid was hearfelt.
Did you see Lena in that red ceremonial dress in the promo and Mon El in a Daxam suit? I have a bad feeling about this... Cat Grant is back, excited about that.

I've thought Monel was pretty bland most of the season and the romance with Kara was the usual boring formulaic CW hook up but I thought they even made him interesting when he pointed that gun at his mother.
All the CW shows have picked up their game with the season finales. This season Legends was the most consistent, Arrow the most improved, and Supergirl was the best but they're showing why they "get it" when the movie division is totally lost.

*sigh*- I have to wait for the blu ray before I can really jump into this discussion. Glad to hear it's pretty good... but... no Legion special episode yet? Bummer.

I liked Mon El from the start. Big fan. Love his chemistry with Kara. His story is really good. He really has changed and grown so much. And Chris Wood is a very good actor. Just my opinion.

I never really saw it. Guy has little gravitas but then maybe that's the point. Grant Gustins Barry Allen has far more chemistry with Benoist imo. I hope they just stay friends though.

Fitting they're doing this with Hatcher and Cain. They even want to make earth New Daxam. So far they're doing this much better than Lois & Clark. Not just the cgi but the storytelling. Im greatly enjoying Lynda Carter vs Teri Hatcher.

Nice pics- but, man, I HATE tha Superman costume with those weird cape attachments on the front.... and I still wish they'd have Brandon Routh as Supes, especially if Supergirl's show is only allowed to have him for a couple of episodes per season.
Still.... looking forward to seeing season 2...

Yeah I hate the way the cape attatches. And the boots. Belt could be ok with some work. I guess they're going for a more regal look which is fine but the execution is flawed.

I'm with you guys, I really wish they had gone with the sort of cape Kara has, it would look much better than the weird attachment system that he has now.
I was pretty gutted to see Cat Grant back this week, since(for me) she was the worst thing about the 1st season, and the show has been better without her in it. Everything out of her mouth is such a thinly veiled political statement about the real world, it's intolerable. I don't watch a show like this to be reminded of global politics or to be preached to about real issues in such a direct way. Other than this complaint, the episode was decent, nice to see Superman back, though if he's so easy to control I don't know why she doesn't just control Kara the same way? Anyway, I hope for a good episode next week, fingers crossed they keep the anti Trump, fake news, girl power bullsh!t to a minimum.

Not that I totally disagree with what they say but I agree with you that I'm tired of the social and political commentary and opinions of the show. They aren't the only superhero show doing it but they are the worst. It's escapism. Not an opinion piece. It's just annoying to get preached to especially in a forum where it's not appropriate.
Not a fan of Kat either. She's just annoying with the devil wears Prada shtick and I find Flockharts overly botoxed, over made up, digitally blurred face hilarious. She looked like the f*cking Joker in drag last week
As for why Reya didn't control Supergirl it's because she wants Supergirl to suffer. With Reya it's personal because she blames her for turning her son against her. She knows her. She probably loathes all Kryptonian but she hates Kara even more. No better way to emotionally hurt Supergirl than to turn her only blood left against her to kill her. Or she kills him. That won't happen but I'm sure Reya is hoping for that.

Haven't seen this yet- so I can't comment specifically on what was said- (and I also don't argue politics nor religion with friends as a rule, never winners when that's engaged) but I think there is a way to have social commentary in a superhero story without polarizing anyone.... there are ways to do it so that it enhances the story, not stop it dead in its tracks by introducing the real world. Anyhow, easier to comment once I've seen it....

I totally agree. But like you said you can end up getting everyone mad. I think it's when a show only presents one viewpoint and handles it clumsily that they're really asking for trouble. You really have to tread carefully. Even though I criticized Rick Berman for staying away from certain issues I can see why he did. Especially back in the 90s. Can you imagine the labels and attacks that would get slung the way of any of the old Star Trek shows now? Just having a female lead now seems to split people in a way Buffy or Xena never did 20 years ago.

Can you imagine the labels and attacks that would get slung the way of any of the old Star Trek shows now? Just having a female lead now seems to split people in a way Buffy or Xena never did 20 years ago. When Trek was at its best, I think it gave valid arguments on different sides of the spectrum- which I thought was so interesting about classic Trek: Spock representing a logical and pragmatic argument, Bones representing an emotional one- and Kirk was a bit of a cowboy. When 'art' (or pop tv) tries to play it too safe, it might be entertaining while saying nothing at all (much of my criticism of many CW shows)- and that's fine- but over time, it's like having ice cream for dinner. After awhile, you probably want something that has some substance or meat to it. On the other hand, when 'art' does try to say something, I totally agree: it has to be done just right so that it isn't a preach-a-thon or break the 4th wall, if it wants to be effective and be a fair argument for something. Bringing it back to Superman- it could be argued that as lightweight as the movies are, there are underlying messages to STM and SII: about heroism and self-sacrifice, about the humanity that Supes is raised with, with the adoptive parents, etc.---- But with Superman IV- it's too 'on the nose'. While I think there are things that the script had that were ambitious with good intents, well--- again, I think the movies are a good way to illustrate 'good' and 'bad' ways to get a message across in fantasy films. Heavy handed never seems the way to go- and breaking the 4th wall I don't think either. As another example, even Donner had some bits of political commentary in his Lethal Weapon movies- some of which were planted fine, as it didn't distract (the Murtagh family wanting to boycott tuna was funny but felt part of that world)- but other parts that did distract as it was too 'at the moment' and nothing to do with the character or plot arc (there's a line of dialogue where Riggs mentions worrying about Japan buying up tons of U.S. property- which might have been topical at the time, but had ZERO to do with the plot or characters, and since it's decades later- the exchange just dates the film). Anyhow- could go on further about commentary in art and how it can cross over into dull propaganda, but.... what were we saying about Teri Hatcher again?

I agree. You have to work the commentary into a good story or else it's just preaching. When you're doing it just to do it or using it just to hide the fact that everything else is crap it never works. Superman IV is an "ISSUE" sequel where the issue is sloppily handled and put in the background to give a false sense of quality. Highlander II did it, Rambo III did it, Robocop 2 did it, and so many others from that era did too. The only ones that really made the issue backdrop work were Star Trek IV and VI because the issues were interwoven into the stories naturally and carefully.

Agreed-- and its probably no coincidence in Trek's case that the even numbered 'good' Treks had Nicholas Meyer involved as writer for those!

SPOILERS!
There's a theory out there that Mon-El was sent to the future (the era of the LOSH). Kinda hoping that was the case. They really went big on the finale. Alien soldiers vs alien species soldiers. Supes Kara and the Manhunter vs the Daxamites.
I enjoyed the finale but I had the one big problem with it that I also had with the Flash and Agents of SHIELD finales. The buildups were so big and complex that I felt like most of the seasons stories were resolved far too quickly. Legends of Tomorrow sort of avoided that by wrapping things up across two episodes instead of one.
Aida, the framework, ghost riders return were all one episodes worth of story each. Same with the Daxam invasion, Supergirl be Reya, Cadmus and the Luthors, etc. same for Flash vs Savitar, Iris death, the return of Jay Garrick and so on.
Flash's use of time travel left me feeling the least satisfied because the rules don't make sense. If Savitar was erased from existence at the end everything he affected should have changed. Flash uses the whole timey whimey get out of jail free card too much. Also if Barry beating Savitar was that easy why didn't Barry do that weeks ago? I guess with three speedsters and vibe and gypsy it was easier to catch him.
Hopefully Arrow will avoid the pitfalls of the other shows for its finale.

SPOILERS
Finale was action packed, entertaining, emotional stuff was good (Kara/Mon El goodbye was heartbreaking), but I had a big problem. Superman sucked big time in it. Now Kara is more powerful and even emotionally stronger than Supes... meh, hated that. I wish he was off world or something so that she had to save the world herself, but of course the show needed Superman to attract more viewers only to poop all over him.

I had some issues with that too. I don't see how Kara could be physically stronger than him since in the end it came down to a pure slugfest. He's been exposed to our sun for far longer and has been doing this longer so he should be stronger. I wish they'd shown Kara out maneuvering or out strategizing him to win the fight because of is affected mental state. That would have been more believable.

Finally- Caught the whole season on Netflix! Rough bullet points: #1: darn!!! Spectacle-wise, the production values have come SOOO far ahead of "Lois and Clark" and "Smallville"-the sets, fx, and costumes are so good now, (Outside of the horrible Livewire which still irks me) it's a shock that the budget actually went DOWN rather than 'up' for Supergirl since its produciton moved to Canada. Why does the season finale seem bigger than the $200 million Bvs? LOVE the set for the DEO and the Daxam spaceship..... Kind of wish that the Fortress of Solitude was as detailed (though I do like the inclusion of Supes' parents' statues in it). Tge fubake us anazubg, #2: Teri Hatcher is great as Mon-el's mom- though I wish they had gone a little deeper with her hcaracter if she really had lost it by killing her husband writing-wise. #3: The subplot of Alex's relationship: ZZZZZZZZZZ!!!! darn, it's boring and ate up WAYYY too much screen time. The "Dawson's Creek" Berlianti reared it's ugly head.... #4: Supergirl stronger than Superman? Really pushing comic history. Seems unnecessary and irritating. Can't they be equal? #5: Crhis Wood as Mon-el- When I saw his pictures (like Brandon Routh with SR), initially I thought him too young- but his presence and voice really captures how I envisioned Mon-el! (though the lack of the red suit and cape was really disappointing). I thought they were going to project Mon-el into the Phantom Zone, would have been nice if they did. #6: It's actually good that they 'spare' the amount of appearances of Superman. Saving them makes i tfeel more impactful. #7: Lots of fun watching the musical episode. Two things that the Berliantiverse has over "Smallivlle" (1) costumes! and (2) a better sense of fun and humor. #8: While I wasn't necessarily crazy about all the aspects of the Mon-el/Supergirl relationship, I thought that Chris Wood was great casting and felt like the comics' imo.... so, I didn't mind it at all (Definitely preferred it to the lame Jimmy Olsen/Kara relationship). #9: Does the CW HAVE to have so much singing with every emotional scene? I don't remember it happening as much on CBS, but I could be wrong... #10: Looks like Doomsday for the next season with the cliffhanger? Hope not... #11: Jimmy Olsen as the Guardian? Meh. But at least it's better than Olsen as the love interest. Thought overall Season 2 was very good and entertaining, though (as per my usual criticism) not as deep as Deep Space Nine/ Buffy the Vampire Slayer/ Angel.... but definitely Melissa Benoist carries the show on her shoulders and keeps you engaged. Looking forward to season 3!
